Invaded a friend’s blind playthrough as a Mirror Squire, and it did not go as planned...

    Posted: 20 Jul 2020 08:22 PM PDT

Hey, first post here. It's a bit long, but TL;DR at the end.

I bought my friend SOTFS during the Steam Summer Sale. He and I live several states apart so I've been watching his blind playthrough through Discord. He has been progressing well.

I decided that, when the time came, I was going to do my best to invade him as a mirror squire. So, I created a character that I thought would be a good fit for the theme of the Looking Glass Knight and his arena. I settled on the Arthurian figure Sir. Dagonet, a court jester who desperately wanted to join King Arthur's knights.

The plan was simple - get the jester's set and the handmaiden's ladle. Play the first part of the battle as a fool who is a poor knight because he cannot do damage. Then, once the Looking Glass Knight hits 50% HP, quickly swap into the knight's set and use the grand lance (Sir Dagonet once lost a jousting tournament in legend)

Today was the day - my friend was in Drangleic Castle, getting closer to the Looking Glass Knight. I had my red soapstone at the ready, and he enters the boss room. The game summoned me first try!!!

I am excitedly waiting to spawn in. I look at my friend's footage, ready to see my character's name and model show up - and it says:

    "Mirror Squire Sir *****et summoned"

Well, there goes my character setup. No matter, at least the fight will be fun. I spend a while trolling him with the handmaid's ladle, getting a few backstabs in. Then the Looking Glass Knight starts summoning an NPC Squire. At this point, it's a 3 on 1, do he doesn't last too long.

I didn't get summoned on his next attempt, so he easily killed the LGK. At this point I confessed my trickery, and he and I discussed my plans and I found out why my name was censored - apparently Dago is a racial slur against Italian Americans. I never got to go into my phase 2.

TL;DR: I invaded my friend with a themed custom build, the themed name was censored, and I never got to finish my whole invasion plan. Task Failed Successfuly?

I just jump attacked off into water, before opening a shortcut, and dropped 90.000 souls

    Posted: 21 Jul 2020 12:54 PM PDT

So... First sorcery only run, I get my Int up to 26, and complete like 1.5 levels without returning to Majula, because everything dies in two hits either way.
I decide that I can totally just do No-man's Wharf as well without dying, 70.000 Souls on my person. And I totally pull it off.

Call me Mage King, because I killed every single enemy in the level too before running over to kick down the bridge, 'cause out of spells.

I try to R2 the last guy, right before the goddamn bridge... and accidentally tilt my stick.

So I jump attack, and stick the landing right on the edge, when the recovery animation makes me slide off and INTO THE WATER WITH ALMOST NINETY THOUSAND SOULS AAAAAAH

IT'S OKAY. I'm just gonna go get them. I won't run through, I'll just kill EVERYTHING again.
(I should've remembered that the pathway with Gavlan is open, but I'm in delirium)
So I kill 90% of enemies, and then, in the room with all the poison jars, only one guy is left, and I get poisoned.

I decide I'm gonna play it safe, go into the door frame to heal, and instead of swinging, the guy does the one move he shouldn't do right now and WALKS TOWARDS ME WITH HIS SWORD IN THE AIR AND SWINGS AT ME, SO I DON'T GET THE HEAL AND DIE FROM POISON.

Then I died in real life, see you around.

    Shulva, Sanctum City, WOW

    Posted: 21 Jul 2020 12:32 PM PDT

So I recently discovered Dark Souls and enjoyed it so much I went straight onto Dark Souls 2. There's a lot that can and has been said about whether or not DS2 but a point people always make is that the DLC is amazing. Well, I haven't done all of the DLC yet, but Shulva will remain with me for ages. The whole thing is brilliant, it looks spectacular (worth bearing in mind that with the remaster, ds2 is currently the graphically weakest title) and boy the gameplay is incredible.

I love the first encounter so much. A big open area full of tanky archers. Looks absolutely impossible until you accidentally hit a pillar. A host of possibilities open up. Pretty much everything about that area is perfect, I wouldn't change a thing. I don't even really have the words to explain why exactly it has "magic". I'm sure a game designer would.

The sanctum itself is extremely engaging, if ridiculously hard (died so many times to the area after the first priestess, but running around the body room desperately stabbing them all is hilarious). The dark dinosaurs are great. The experience of seeing the bridge to the sanctum proper is proper "Dark Souls cool". (And the dragon's pretty cool!)

I'm enjoying this area so much, and I speak as someone who just lost 60,000 souls to Yarg and her mates.

Dark Souls book for Illusory Rings?

    Posted: 21 Jul 2020 12:22 PM PDT

I expect I may get mocked for this, but, hey, what the hell.

I have a spare copy of the following book: https://www.thirdeditions.com/en/rpg/207-dark-souls-beyond-the-grave-volume-2-9782377840380.html

It is the second of two volumes that Third Editions published about the Soulsborne series. It covers Bloodborne and DS3. The reason I have a spare copy is that I was not happy with the condition it arrived in, but I am probably a bit picky (as a book collector). It came straight from the publisher and has never been read, but it did have a bit of bending to one of of the hardcover corners. I would describe it as "Very good" condition overall.

If someone was willing to drop me the Illusory Rings (Xbox, SM 21 million), I'd be happy to ship it to you at no cost (assuming you are in the U.S. or maybe Canada).

If so, please message me. I'm also happy to provide photos of the book.

My interest in the rings is solely for completionist purposes, and I would rather move on to DS3 rather than try to earn them myself. I can frankly admit that I probably not gud enuf to do so, anyway.

Plus, it's a great book, and I would like to give it back to someone in this community rather than merely list it on eBay.

    Thanks!

Can you reinfuse a weapon without a palestone?

    Posted: 21 Jul 2020 02:10 PM PDT

I believe this was the case in dark souls 3 where you could change the infusion on a weapon without uninfusing it. I have 40 in both INT and FTH with my fire bonus being 155 and my dark bonus at 170 (going off oh memory here). I've been farming souls at the second iron keep bonfire and now I have 25-30 fire stones. So my thought is I'll slap fire stones onto all my weapons until I get more dark stones and change it. So main question again, will this require a palestone each time or can I freely change the infusion?

    Reddit, I beat ds2!

    Posted: 21 Jul 2020 01:31 PM PDT

I came into this game knowing the rapier was good, and the bosses. That's about it. I must say the progression was confusing as hell but wikis are my savior. After all that I don't can't say I agree with all the hate this game gets, a lot of it the complaints seem to boil down to "I don't like it because it's different" TLDR I love this game and will definitely be doing more play throughs in time

A way to cheat the no death no bonfire run on ps4

    Posted: 21 Jul 2020 12:33 PM PDT

So. I've been having trouble with my no death no bonfire run but managed to do it last week in 6 hours. Afterwards I actually relized that you could make checkpoints for yourself after every boss by uploading your save data. If you die getting to the next boss etc you can download the data and it's essentially just a rewind. I didnt do this myself but I tried it out and it works. I know some people just want to do it and get it over with for the rings and this is the way to do it if your willing to throw away a bit of dignity lol

What if the Giants are the reincarnation of Archtrees into humanoid forms?

    Posted: 21 Jul 2020 03:30 AM PDT

So the old theory was maybe the Giants could have been the reincarnation of the Everlasting Dragons, with the possible error possible easter egg of the Dragon having a Giant Soul (it could have been an oversight by the game devs or representing experiments to recreate the dragons usings what was available.). With Giants becoming trees after they die they could even represent the seed phase of the Archtrees dying and planting and slowly growing till the Grey Age returns.

But looking at them they really appear to be reminiscent of the knotholes of oaken hollows of trees. So what if the Archtrees had something akin to souls, or like how Dragons had bones that functioned somewhat like souls and could be used as such for sorcerous workings like making golems maybe Archtrees nonsoul essence got reincarnated into Giant souls? Even Yhorm seems to emulate the hole faced giants of Dark Souls II, picks show Yhorm does have a face but its steeped in the shadow of his armor. And what if the only giants we see, besides that one pointed toothed one in the dream, were something akin to degenerate Hollowlike giants, and living giants actually do have faces?

I basically just hit a brick wall

    Posted: 21 Jul 2020 09:41 AM PDT

This is my first play through of the game and I decided to go for a dex/hex build and it was going great until I got to velstadt. He is so immune to dark I even tried to go to the dlc but noting but dark there as well. I used the dark warped sword and the sunset staff but now that everything is resistant to it I'm not sure what to do. I thought about switch to a strength build and use the smelter sword but wanted someone's advise first

    Need some advice

    Posted: 21 Jul 2020 04:15 AM PDT

Hello there. I am new to ds2, and I am at tower of flame and I need some advice. -I am at level 32, with +1 fire longsword. Is this recommended ? -how the f am I supposed to beat the 2 old knights that are always together? I can't sprint past them either or else when I am at the dragon I get destroyed by enemies. -where should I have +3 or +4 weapons? I have been up to the No man's wharf, but it seemed as my weapon wasn't good enough. Thx for advice

Edit: found a way to beat the two knights, the question still stands for the other ones

Edit 2: I actually had already got past the dragon rider, I meant you know the arena with three old knights and one heide knight? Whenever I hit the sword and shield knight, or alert the sword and shield knight, the greatsword knight aggroes too. And they both follow me even at the dragon rider arena. Luckily I made one despawn, and that is what I think I am going to do for all enemies in my path that gank me. It will take a lot of time, but it will be easy

    Adaptability is the king

    Posted: 21 Jul 2020 07:13 AM PDT

Feel hard fighting bosses? It's probably because you didn't level up enough adaptability, the poison and bleed resistance you get from it is garbage but the sweet poise and iframe make it so much worthy, if you invest about 30 adaptability, no one can touch you when you are rolling. Used to wonder why fume knight still hit you even if you roll the right time? Because your iframe is so short make it impossible to doge anything. Don't dumb all your souls on str and dex, try get to 20 adaptability as soon as you can in the game, make you much harder to die.

...I had killed Strowen for effigies at the start of the game, not realizing she was important. I googled to see if I was screwed, but I learned I could raise her from the grave and "respec".

Guys, I literally thought "respec" was meme speak for "respect," like I had to pay my respects to unfuck my game. It took a full 24 hours before I realized I was an idiot.

An error occured while attempting to save

    Posted: 21 Jul 2020 05:56 AM PDT

Happens every so often at random intervals when I'm playing the game. Tried multiple suggested fixes I've seen on the internet like running the game as an admin, making sure the save file and folders aren't read-only (instead of a checkmark the box is black and stays that way no matter how many times I've tried to change it, but I've read that this doesn't mean anything), making sure the entire appdata folder isn't read-only, validating the steam files and uninstalling and reinstalling the game. And none of them did anything. Is there anything else I can do?
