Welcome to the weekly Dark Souls mod announcement and discussion thread!

Beware! Use of mods whilst connected to the internet can cause you to get banned from online play!

For more information, or to continue the discussion visit /r/ModSouls

Using mods (PC only!) to enhance or add new content to the Souls games is great fun! It is important, however, to understand that mods are against From's EULA/ToS, so there is a great risk of being banned when using them due to From's anti-cheat--which is deployed in most versions of the Souls games.

Versions of the games where modding is safe due to no anti-cheat:

Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition

Versions of the games where modding carries a very high risk of being banned:

    Dark Souls: Remastered

    Dark Souls II

Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin

    Dark Souls III

    Our recommendations for safe modding

*This advice is intended for first-time or relatively inexperienced modders who want to get into modding without risking a ban on their main Steam account.

    Basic Steps:

    Make a separate Steam account

Use Steam's Family Sharing feature to provide your new account with access to your main Steam account's game library.

Install games to be used with the new account in a separate directory.

Once you've found your mods be sure to read (and follow) the mod author's instructions carefully prior to installation.

Set Steam to "off line" mode.

Install the mods and perform any necessary setup.

Enjoy the fun and interesting experiences offered by mods!

Be sure to remove all file components of the mod before going back online!

Alternate Method to Save Solaire Discovered

    Posted: 28 Jun 2020 08:14 PM PDT

Hey everyone, just wanted to share a little exploit I figured out. I've tested it and it works 100%, plus its far simpler than the default method to save Solaire.

The two methods you probably know about are the default method (long questline, costs 30 humanity and a mandatory covenant switch, ugh) and the cheap method (use poison mist or some equivalent spell to kill the Sunlight Maggot through the gate)

What I found is a simple method that anyone can perform.

Simply progress Solaire's questline up until Anor Londo, then DO NOT TALK TO HIM. Don't do it, even by accident. This prevents him from leaving Anor Londo after you beat O&S (to be safe, I wouldnt summon him either)

Progress through the game as usual until you reach the locked gate down in Izalith. Once you're on the other side (approaching from the area near the Bed of Chaos fight) kill the Sunlight Maggot.

Once you're sure that sucker is dead, return to Anor Londo and exhaust Solaire's dialogue. He may not move until you revisit Lost Izalith, then he will have left Anor Londo.

Once he's gone you can summon him for the Lord Gwyn fight. Congratulations, you saved Solaire by encouraging him to sit on his ass!

The downsides are obvious, you miss out on a decent NPC summon for the O&S + Centipede Demon fights. But in exchange, you dodge the 30 humanity cost and the mandatory covenant switch (you're welcome Darkmoon Blades). Plus, any build can perform this.

I'm going to have to test if other "delayed questlines" are possible. Unlike in future installments, NPCs in this game just sort of sit around forever if you don't talk to them. The Crestfallen Warrior, for instance, never goes hollow if you just don't talk to him.

    Finally beat Dark Souls

    Posted: 29 Jun 2020 01:47 AM PDT

After messing around for 85+ hrs I decided I wanted to end it, I only had Manus, Nito and Gwyn left, Manus was really annoying, I decided I couldn't do it and looked up a video of how they beat him, turns out it was exactly what I was doing without sucking lol so kept trying until I got gud, nito and gwyn were kinda easy maybe expected more 'cause of manus, it was a mostly blind run other than a few things like how to get to the dlc, I failed Solaire's and Sigmeyer's questlines for not knowing what to do
Now that I know the game (after messing around so much) I'll try a 'speedrun' for my second playthrough :-)

Introduction to souls lore, and the metaphysics of souls!

    Posted: 28 Jun 2020 06:28 PM PDT

Dark souls has an interesting lore, but much of it is purposefully complex, hard to find, subjective and contradictory. Not much of it is told explicitly, and Dark Souls uses a lot of symbolism and metaphors rather than clear logical ideas. The following is an attempt by me to translate and summarise much of this symbolic, metaphorical and complex story into a logical and straightforward one, which we can all understand. I try to assume/extrapolate as little as I can, and rely on the source material of mostly item descriptions and dialogue. As I said, much of the story is subjective, unclear and contradictory, so there is no true right or wrong understanding of the full Dark Souls story, this is just my perspective. I really enjoy exploring the lore of Dark Souls, and want to share my understanding and enjoyment with the rest of you. Feel free to offer arguments/counterpoints in the comments and I'll try to get back to most of them.

I am using all three games as sources, but Dark Souls 1 & 2 provide the most information on the topics I am discussing.

    Age of Ancients

Grey unchanging land. Immortal dragons, grey crags and archtrees. There is no disparity in the world. Light exists physically but the concept of light does not. The idea of light and dark makes no sense in a world where everything is grey and equally bright. Likewise the world has a physical temperature but the concept of hot and cold makes no sense since everything is the same temperature. The immortal and ageless dragons seem to be alive, but again the concept of life makes so sense when there is no such thing as death. I think of the dragons as 'animate' rather than alive.

Since in oolacile we are told that light and time are the same, I take it to mean that the first flame started the flow of time too, where the concept of past, present and future make sense. I imagine the age of ancients as a place where time does not work in the way we understand it today, and is impossible to conceive of. I see it almost as a parellel to the big bang, before which there was no such thing as time as we understand it now. In the souls games we always play during a time when the fire is fading, and the world is falling into darkness. We are told time is convoluted during this event, and often see mulitple civilisations overlapping that did not exist at the same time.

Advent of Fire and the Metaphysics of Souls

The First Flame came into being deep underground, bringing disparity to the world. Hot/cold. Life/death. Light/dark. "From the dark, they came". We see what looks like hollows approaching the first flame after an unkown length of time. Were they there before the fire, undying and everlasting like the dragons, or were they brought into being alongside the first flame. We can't say for sure. The line seems to suggest that they were formed in/from the dark, but it could simply mean that they literally walked out of the shadows and into the light of the first flame as they approached it. Around the flame (not 'in' it, this is a mistranslation) we are told that 4 powerful 'Lord Souls' were found by 4 of these early beings. Each of these souls gave their wielder unique powers. Gwyn found the light soul, The Furtive Pygmy found the dark soul, Into found the death soul, and The Witch of Izalith found the Life Soul. With their powerful souls these lords went on to defeat the everlasting dragons and bring about the first age of light.

We are told that "Souls are the source of all life" in their item description. We see Souls in game as glowing/burning balls of smoke/light. Souls seem to be the Dark Souls equivalent to energy/power. It appears that while there are 4 unique lord souls, there are also generic souls, which are the souls we collect in the game when killing creatures. Anything that could be thought of as 'alive' possesses souls. When you kill any living creature they die and lose their souls, which you can take for yourself. More powerful beings contain more souls. We can use souls to increase our own power. In dark souls 2, King Vendrick learns how to infuse souls into inanimate objects, creating 'golems', which are essentially the machines of the dark souls world. They can be programmed to perform specific actions and are powered by souls, but do not have free will and consciousness like truly alive things do.

Having souls and being 'alive' is not the same as having free will/consciousness. Hollows have souls and are clearly alive in some sense if the word, but they have lost their minds and their free will. When humans afflicted with the undead curse die they revive at a bonfire but lose some of their humanity (dark soul), eventually going 'hollow' (turning into beef jerky). Apparently even while hollow they can retain their free-will so long as they have a sense of meaning and purpose, but if they lose that then they go mad and truly hollow. Even when fully hollow, creatures seem to retain some memory of their former purpose and are often found guarding their homelands or endlessly carrying out their former duty. This is speculation, but Gwyn appears to be hollow when we fight him. This suggests that just as humans can go hollow when they lose their humanity (dark soul fragment), so too can owners of the light soul like gwyn.

There is some connection between souls and blood, perhaps souls reside in the blood. Evidence: -In the final Dark Souls 3 DLC, we see Gael consuming the blood of the pygmies to collect as much of the Dark Soul as he can. -Rats that eat human flesh often drop humanity. -Aldrich feasts on human flesh and ends up having a soul powerful enough to link the flame. -Owners of the lord souls pass on their lord soul down via their bloodline. See below. The Witch of Izalith has the Life Soul which gave her a mastery over fire. Her children share her powers. They develop fire sorceries and eventually pyromancy. This suggests to me that the Witch of Izalith passed on some of the life soul down her bloodline. -The Light Soul gave Gwyn power over light. His daughter Gwynevere performed the healing miracle Bountiful Sunlight. Gwyn's first-born son (who we now know to be the nameless king from DS3) was able to weild lightning spears like his father. Gwyndolin was able to manipulate light to create powerful illusions. It seems the Light Soul too is passed on down a bloodline. -(speculation here but seems likely) When human children are born, they are not hollows that then need to acquire humanity to become human, they are born with their humanity as they share their parents bloodline. -The furtive pygmy shared his lord soul among others. This could be a metaphor for him having many children, or it could simply mean he literally split the dark soul and gave fragments of it to others. Gwyn, like the pygmy, shared his lord soul with others, offering a fragment of its power to Seath the Scaleless and The Four Kings. There may be others named but these are the only examples I remember. The conclusion I draw from the above examples, is that the lord souls offer unique powers to those that possess them, and can be physically gifted to others, and passed on down a bloodline.

Souls can exist outside of a body as the floating balls of white light/smoke we see in-game and that we can consume to gain souls.

Humanity can exist on its own as humanity sprites.

    Souls + Humanity + a body = Humans/pygmies

Souls + Light Soul + a body = Gwyn and his bloodline

When either of these lose their light/dark soul component, they become hollow.

    Notes on Lord Souls

Light Soul-Found by Gwyn. Gives power over light magic, as evidenced by lightning spears and sunlight healing spells*. Provides immense power when the first flame is burning strongly, but its power fades as the first flame fades.

    * I purposefully avoid calling them miracles here. Miracles in-game are described literally as stories of magical events that allow you to recreate their effects. So when you cast the miracle sunlight spear, you are literally telling the story of when Gwyn threw spears of lightning, and the act of telling this story somehow gives you the power to throw lightning spears too. When Gwyn was throwing lightning spears he was presumably not telling stories about himself throwing lightning, he was actually performing magic, and so I say he has the power to perform light magic, not miracles.

Dark Soul-Found by The Furtive Pygmy, who did not seek power and shared it with others. Contrary to the Light soul, the Dark Soul's power grows as the first flame fades. It exists as a counterpoint to the Light Soul. The powers provided by the dark soul are unclear, the darksign is said to contain the power of dark in humans, so perhaps this is why humans don't seem to have unique powers. In-game we see dark versions of sorceries, pyromancies and miracles that are described as similar to humanity in their nature, and deal dark damage. In the Ringed City DLC the Ringed Knight set tells us that their weapons and armour were forged in the abyss, so seemingly at one point humans knew how to forge powerful weapons using the power of the Dark Soul.

The solid form of the dark soul is humanity sprites. Humanity is what makes humans human. Humans marked by the darksign are known as undead. They become immortal, but lose some humanity when they die. When humans lose their humanity entirely, they turn into beef jerky and go hollow.

Humanity is known to "go mad", causing madness and destruction, as evidenced by events in oolacile. Humanity is connected to the abyss, a mysterious realm of darkness that seems to appear and spread when humanity "goes mad". The abyss seems to manifest itself when humans experience extremes of negative emotion. The abyss in oolaile originated from Manus, who was characterised by his intense desire for his lost pendant, and the 'ornery wrath' he felt towards the citizens of Oolacile who upturned his grave. The abyss spawned under New Londo when Kaathe tempted The Four Kings with the art of lifedrain. Here The Four Kings exhibit greed and pride and a desire for more power. In DS3 the abyss is found with Highlord Wolnir, who we are told had and intense desire to outlast all other kings. Again here we see extreme desire, pride, greed and fear, resulting in the abyss manifesting and consuming Wolnir. In the Ringed City DLC we experience the Abyss Swamp, filled with the locust preachers, who act in line with what we have seen previously around the abyss, they were supposed to beckon men to the dark, but are unable to see past their own stomachs. Again, out of control greed linked to the abyss.

The Dark Soul's true nature is supposedly quiet, calm, cool, and dark (duh), but in the presence of uncontrolled emotion it can bring great destruction. I really like this idea as it seems to be a direct comparison to humanity in real life. In the real world, humans are capable of doing great deeds and transforming the world for the better, but when we are corrupted by unstable emotions (fear, anger, pride, greed) we can go mad and cause untold destruction and chaos. I love how FromSoftware has presented human nature to us in the Dark Souls games.

Life Soul-Found by The Witch of Izalith. Seems to give her and her children power over fire. Fire seems to have a connection with life, as it was the first flame that brought true life into existence. The witch and her daughters attempted to recreate The First Flame using the power of the Life Soul, but lost control and created the bed of chaos and the race of demons. The idea of chaos seems to me to be a parallel to the idea of the abyss. The Dark Soul is harmless when under control, but when we lose control it can cause destruction. Likewise the Life Soul can be controlled and harnessed as a tool for good, but again if it is not kept under control it creates chaos and destruction.

Death Soul-Found by Gravelord Nito, "first of the dead". Exists as the counterpoint to the Life Soul. Very little is given as to the powers it provides. Nito seemed to have a peaceful existence and had little activity after the war with the dragons. Seems to be linked to the skeletons we see in game?

Hope I helped some people understand the Dark Souls world a bit better, or at least gave some enjoyable reading. This is only a tiny section of Dark Souls lore, primarily on the nature of souls, but it is really useful foundational knowledge to help understand the rest of the game. I hope to write up on another topic soon but have yet to choose one, feel free to make requests! :D

    Post your Dark Souls Trivia

    Posted: 28 Jun 2020 08:37 PM PDT

Be it meta-info, game mechanics, tips or tricks, whatever. If you know it, share it!

    Here's some I have:

•Paladin Leeroy is susceptible to the Occult weapon modifier

•Occult also deals extra damage to Gwyn, Gwyndolin, and Ornstein (but not Smough)

    •You can kick ghosts

•Solaire is always wearing his Orange Charred Ring, even when in the Undead Parish

•Talking to the Firelink Firekeeper after giving the four Lord Souls will prompt special dialogue, and she'll boost her flame to provide 20 Estus

•The Crystal Knight fought before Seath can parry (although his crystal shield can only bash when used by the player)

•There is only one Balder Crossbowman in the entire game, at Sens Fortress

•You cannot have two light sources active at once. If you use the skull lantern, the sunlight maggot's light will vanish.

•Centipede Demon was originally intended to be fought atop the Undead Parish roof

•The Painted World was the first level designed

•Nito, Priscilla, and a few other bosses were designed by artists outside FromSoft
