I uninstalled Dark Souls on my first playthrough

    Posted: 04 Jun 2020 04:40 AM PDT

Yep. Being used to casul games where you can basically stave off injury like a demigod and supplies are nothing less than abundant, I was floored and absolutely infuriated that I couldn't even get past the shield-carrying hollow warriors in Undead Burg. Every victory felt like a war of attrition, and my sanity was going downhill fast.

The next day, I thought about how much of a wuss I was being. That I gave up easily on one of the best, most iconic games ever developed. That I rage quit because I got whooped by a regular mob. I wasn't about to take that shame, so I reinstalled the game with a new mindset.

Fast forward through different playthroughs with varying builds and combat styles (and of course, Fashion Souls), I am itching to buy Dark Souls 3 once I save up for an actual gaming computer.

Even now, I'm still discovering hidden items and experimenting with different gear. Watching other people on youtube and twitch play DS1 is also an enjoyable past-time. I can see why there's such a cult-following to this franchise that has long achieved meme status.

Edit: I'm pleasantly surprised a lot of you have had the same "fuck it, I'm going back in" experience. I love y'all stubborn bastards so here's some Priscilla art I made yesterday.

    >4 hours in and I love this game

    Posted: 04 Jun 2020 05:01 PM PDT

I just beat Taurus Demon and wow. this game is... something.

I bought DSR yesterday and right away I could tell it was going to be special. obviously, I had heard the praise but experiencing it is so much different.

I was stuck on Undead Burg (the part before Taurus) for a good bit. I couldn't help but button mash given my previous experiences with games, but after try and fail I 'learned' the timing of the Undead's attacks which helped me clear the area a bit easier. at first I kinda hated having to die over and over again, but after a while it kinda made me thrilled because I knew I had to employ a new strategy.

then I got to Taurus. I died time and time again; which led me to read a few posts on here and saw that my best option would be to take all my armor off and do plunge attacks. this didn't work right away, so I had to come up with more strategic rolling and time everything better. I loved that, even when I was cheesing it, it still made me think outside the box.

how did I beat Taurus? well, after a plunge attack and running to the end of the bridge I was healing and mistimed a roll which led me to take an attack from him, then I rolled again out of panic and he fell off the map. i know it should feel like bs but I like that stuff like that can happen at random.

can't wait to progress through the rest of this game.

finally completed the trilogy! What a ride

    Posted: 05 Jun 2020 01:58 AM PDT

The lockdown gave me time to go back and replay the trilogy.

Started with DS Remastered, followed by DS3 for the lore continuity. Spent a lot of hours collecting the covent medals.

DS2 took the longest as I was stuck on Fume knight on NG+ for 4 days. almost uninstalled a couple of times. Got through him solo yesterday. then it was just a matter of getting through Sir Alonne, farming Sunlight medals and rushing through NG+2.

Managed to unlock all achievements today :)

Just wanted to thank the Reddit community for all the help. R/Summonsign was invaluable in completing a couple of achievements.

I feel so bad for solaire

    Posted: 04 Jun 2020 11:23 PM PDT

In a world that's shitty and cruel, where a lot of people who are hollow, even if they aren't they're depressed and out of hope, solaire still had a positive attitude and kept on going. He constantly helped you throughout the game, and doesn't let the world around him beat him down. When we find him in lost Izaleth hollow, it's just really sad. You see a man who constantly was happy and never gave up hollow and insane, turned hollow by a creature that looks like the thing that kept him from going hollow and gave him purpose. Even if we save him he's just sad and depressed. But as he said, time in lordan is weird and convoluted, heroes of the past phasing in and out. Maybe he's still alive in other timelines.

    To the Follower of Solaire

    Posted: 04 Jun 2020 09:44 PM PDT

I'm really sorry about many things, first thing being that I cannot even remember your name. I'm also sorry for knocking you off that ledge, and also for not distracting Manus as you struggled to heal while he endlessly aggroed onto you. I'm also sorry for not bringing a more powerful weapon to the fight with Manus of the fuckin' abyss.

I understand why you removed your summon sign-why you grew sick of me after three failed attempts. You generously gave up your time to help a stranger, and I fully understand if you feel that time was wasted.

Yet I wish for you to know that it WAS not wasted. Every death was just another step towards victory-it was only matter of perseverance. Every stab, every blast of dark energy, every bruise delivered unto your golden form helped me understand my foe better, until Manus had no more surprises left on store for me.

Manus would fall-it was just a question of when he would fall. And when that time came, when I faced him with only Sif by my side, it was glorious. His brutal swipes were nimbly dodged or turned aside by my shield, his dark magic scattered by the power of the amulet. Little by little I whittled the beast down into the abyss from where it came.

So I just want to say this-thank you. Thank you for helping me take down Manus. Thank you for sticking by me, and helping me learn. Thank you for the jolly cooperation.

    Regards,

    Ser Blitzer

    Posted: 04 Jun 2020 12:53 PM PDT

Y'all I beat O&S without summons up to Ng+1 and Artorias for the first time on Ng+1 without too much trouble (two handed halberd +15, shadow armour, power within), but I can't get past 50% life with the black dragon. It's insane! It must have taken me 50 tries to get the obsidian greatsword. Now I'm at over 150 tries and it's just driving me insane. Should it really be taking me this long?

    I beat dark souls today

    Posted: 04 Jun 2020 08:38 PM PDT

I downloaded dark souls remastered for my switch a few weeks ago, I had never played a souls game before and I wanted to see what all the hype was about. After countless hours of getting destroyed by the bosses and enemies, I managed to beat Gwyn and can proudly say I beat dark souls. I used a dex/pyromancy build with my main weapon being the balder side sword.

How are you supposed to figure this out!?

    Posted: 04 Jun 2020 03:49 PM PDT

My first DS playthrough was blind, so of course I missed tons of stuff. Since then I've beaten the game many times and I'm always amazed at how I'm still discovering secrets after all this time. I'm especially amazed when I realize that there were little hints and bits of lore in the game pointing at those secrets all along, which I had merely overlooked.

BUT there are some hidden mechanics in the game that I don't understand how any player could reasonably figure them out. I only discovered them by reading wikis or hearing them discussed, and I'm really curious if there is actually a more reasonable way to understand them in-game.

    Covenant rewards

I completely ignored covenants for a long time because I couldn't find any way in the game to figure out which one I wanted to join. They all give a really vague description of what the covenant involves and even less of a description of what you get for ranking up in them.

Like I really love the Chaos Servant covenant rewards because of how well they fit in with the lore, but there's no way I would have sunk an unknown amount of resources into it without reading the wiki first to know what I would get.

I find it especially weird with covenants like Blade of the Dark Moon where there are huge jumps in cost between ranks and the reward is so subtle that I doubt any player would even notice.

    Boss weapons

I had no idea how to make boss weapons until I looked on the wiki to get the Knight's Honor achievement. As far as I can tell nowhere in the game does it indicate that you need a +10 weapon or even what categories of weapon you need for each soul or even what weapons count for each category.

I guess once you figure out the mechanic you could carry around every soul, get every weapon, upgrade them all to +10 and then see what options the giant blacksmith shows you, but I think if you're playing through blind that's pretty unlikely for someone to invest time in.

    Help me out!

So what did I miss? Is there stuff explaining this that I have overlooked all this time?

Is there anything else in the game that you think is impossible to figure out?

    NO HIT THE BED!!!!!!

    Posted: 04 Jun 2020 09:08 PM PDT

I have been playing dark souls for years! YEARS!!!! And every play through.... everytime.... I dread the bed of chaos boss fight! I love this game to death I really really do but this platform boss is a pain in my rectum every time! But thanks to some tactics from the happy hob who no hit dark souls. Just one bow, two bombs, and a quick bug smash and the fight is over in less than 10 second! I haven't felt this good about beating a boss since my first time soloing O&S! I didn't even put on my symbol of avarice for the extra souls I was so hyped and needed to share haha. Off to beat the game again. Guess it's smooth sailing from here. PRAISE THE SUN!!!!!!!

Need advice for a STR/FTH build

    Posted: 04 Jun 2020 09:03 PM PDT

Just got DS Remastered, and enjoying it so far. I've played DS3 and all its DLC, so I'm not new to Dark Souls.

I saw this Cleric Knight build on the subreddit, and thought it was pretty cool. I played through until after you meet andre, and I feel like the mace is pretty damn weak compared to my lightning spear that nukes fools for 350+ dmg. Also I don't like how short its range is.

Any recommendations for good STR/FTH weapons?

OMG!!! I Beat Ornstein and Smough On My 6th Attempt!!!

    Posted: 04 Jun 2020 07:21 PM PDT

I did it guys! Now before anything I do want to point out that I ended up farming the silver knights for souls a lot since I couldn't take Ornstein and Smough at a low level. That being said I farmed, and farmed until I went from SL 50 to SL 88. I'm a Warrior Class using a Claymore +10, Havel's Greatshield, and Havel's Armor. My stats are 30 Vitality, 40 Endurance, and 50 Strength. I leveled up my strength to 50 so that I could use the greatshield for that sweet sweet stability. I took down Ornstein first and I was down to 7 estus then I went on to finish Smough. I can definitely say that these guys are one of the hardest fights I've encountred in the game. I don't think I could've beaten them at SL 50. Even with my level and all of my equipment, I was still on edge fighting them. I can imagine that it would've taken me WAY MORE attempts if I didn't have the greatshield, armor, and if my SL was at 50. Anyways, I'm proud of myself still. It was a hard fight. Glad I beat them :)

Lord of the Rings-sound effects in Dark Souls 1

    Posted: 04 Jun 2020 05:18 AM PDT

I have searched all around the internet for confirmation and I feel like I'm either wrong or have stumbled upon something not noticed before, so I turn now to you, my Reddit-brethren. I just finished Dark Souls 2 last night and loved it, so today I sat down to play Dark Souls 1 for the first time and I noticed something at the end of the tutorial level after beating the Asylum Demon. In the cutscene when you're lifted up by the raven and carried off to the actual game the sound the raven makes is as far as I can tell lifted directly from the "get off the road, quick!" scene from The Fellowship of the Ring, when the black riders are approaching and the camera makes that weird dollyzoom-effect (or whatever it's called). Can someone please confirm this is actually the case and if I am just really late to the party with this little fun fact due to only having started playing the games now so many years after their initial release?

    Soooo Pinwheel

    Posted: 04 Jun 2020 08:33 PM PDT

    That was... interesting?

Ok, yeah, I know he has a reputation for being stupid easy, and he was, but honestly, I feel like he fits the world and area quite well, but also, I feel like a lot of the ease comes from how late in the game you fight him. If he appeared around the same time as Capra Demon? He'd fit right in.

THEN AGAIN, I'm not even mad that he was easy. I don't like bonewheel pit. I don't like bonewheels. Didn't like bonewheels in PWoA, and time hasn't changed my opinion on bonewheels.

I don't know. It was funny because I just wildly slashed at him before I started thinking "Am I even doing any damage to him because there are a bunch of clones running aro-victory achieved, eh? Alright then."

Is there a reason to not just take the Masterkey every playthrough?

    Posted: 05 Jun 2020 01:56 AM PDT

You can skip the bridge dragon AND the toxic parts of Blighttown.

Does any other starting item come close to the usefulness of the Masterkey?

How do I avoid the ways you can make Dark Souls 1 easier for yourself?

    Posted: 05 Jun 2020 01:33 AM PDT

I'm about to play Dark Souls 1 for the first time. I know that you can control the difficulty for yourself by choosing certain weapons and things which make the game easier. But how do I know what these are? I know you can summon other people to help you, which is an obvious one, but I'm worried that I'll accidentally do something less obvious which will ruin the game for me.

    Priscilla Fight is Such Bullshit

    Posted: 05 Jun 2020 01:12 AM PDT

First of all, on the way to the bossfight you have to go to such a fucking tanky knight. Then you have to fight her while she's fucking invisible. Then you have to be careful not to fall off. THEN you have to not get one-shotted by her fucking bullshit bleed attack. I mean like wtf. Such bullshit.
