The Most Wholesome Dark Souls Story

    Posted: 11 May 2020 02:02 PM PDT

Today I was trying to grind Dragon Scales for the Dragon Torso Stone, so I was invading people in the beginning of the Painted world or Ariamis. I kept invading this one player named Excalibur, and we dueled around 7 or 8 times in a row, I won some and lost some. At one point I just started to wonder "If our worlds keep connecting for an invasion maybe they could connect for a summon as well?"

After that I laid down my summon sign, and lo and behold I was almost immediately summoned by Excalibur. Together we fought through the Painted World, making a pretty good team. After we finally reached Priscilla's fog gate, he just stopped for a moment and then dropped an item. I picked it up, and found he had given me 10 dragon scales! After that we beat the crap out of Priscilla.

Just wanted to share because never before have I had such a wholesome experience in Dark Souls, and never felt such a bond with a souls player such as the one through invasion and then jolly cooperation.

I just completed a Dark Souls run where virtually every enemy was turned into the final boss, am I got gud?

    Posted: 11 May 2020 10:12 PM PDT

After more than 59 hours, I completed my "All Gwyn Run", in which almost every enemy was turned into Gwyn. I watch videos of people playing Dark Souls now and legitimately get confused at why there aren't glowing great swords everywhere. What should I do to heal myself now that I have completed this grotesque challenge? Is there anyway to cleanse my soul enough to return to the vanilla game? More importantly, what should I do next to torture myself for meager amounts of clout?

    Early game invaders are rude

    Posted: 11 May 2020 08:49 PM PDT

Started a new playthrough last night and I'm not surprised to see there's still people invading in undead parish just to one shot the low level dudes with dark bead. I got invaded while fighting the big bloke guarding the fire keeper soul. I killed him just fine then healed up and waited for the invader to find me standing with my back to a wall. Once he appeared I wanted to do the bow emote before our duel but no I was just hit with dark bead and instakilled. Why do people do this? It can't be fun for that long surely. It doesn't bother me that much but I don't really want my first death in my playthrough to be from a rude dude like this :(

    The Archtrees and Petrification

    Posted: 11 May 2020 05:56 PM PDT

Not sure if this has been talked about before, but I was thinking how the Demon's Great Hammer text says it is made from the "stone archtrees," and I got reminded today of petrified wood, which is what happens when wood is slowly replaced by stone via a mineralization process. Petrification happens when wood is buried in water-saturated volcanic ash - like Ash Lake. Which leads me to wondering whether the archtrees slowly turned to stone over a long period of time. The process could have begun with the birth of the First Flame, since we see from the intro that a great blaze arose beneath the archtrees. Something to think about.

On a separate but related note, thinking about this also makes me wonder whether the everlasting dragons' scales were always stone, or if they turned to stone over time. They are supposed to be really ancient, after all, being from the Age of Ancients. Petrification normally takes millions of years.

    Logan and griggs.

    Posted: 11 May 2020 04:03 PM PDT

Griggs of Vinhiem admires Logan and acts like he's his mentor, but I want to discuss the actual relationship between the 2. Griggs of Vinhiem is a secret assassin from the dragon school. He's trapped and is found in a shady place full of theives. Not just that but he's found next to a barrel with a dead regular sorcerer from the dragon school.

"Hat worn by the secret sorcerers at Vinheim Dragon School. They secretly work with sound-based spells, and never reveal themselves."

Griggs is wearing the slumbering dragon crest ring which makes his footsteps have no sound. Heres the description:

"This ring was SECRETLY worn by 👉A👈 surreptitious sorcerer at Vinhiem Dragon School. This ring is engraved with an everlasting dragon in silent slumber, and masks all sound emitting from its wearer."

This is the only dragon ring he doesn't sell the player, we find it on a secret assassins corpse in sens fortress and on Griggs corpse upon his death. He alao doesn't sell hush which has the same effect as the slumbering dragon crest ring. Interestingly enough he does sell us fall control which makes the user take no damage upon a fall and makes the user have no sound upon falling. We can also find this item on Griggs death and on the same corpse in sens fortress. Heres the description for hush:

"Sorcery DEVELOPED by 👉A👈 surreptitious sorcerer at Vinhiem Dragon School. Masks all noises of caster. Effectively, Vinheim is controlled by the Dragon School, and its no wonder that the town has its share of dark secrets.

Heres the description for fall control:

Sorcery DEVELOPED by 👉A👈 certain surreptitious sorcerer at Vinheim Dragon School. Reduce damage and noise from fall. This sorcery, ALONG with Hush, explains the extravagant cost of hiring Vinheim spooks."

The description of hush and fall control suggest that 1 person developed and secretly used it. The slumbering dragon crest ring wasn't developed by 1 person but it was used by 1 person. Logan sells all the sorcery that Griggs does and more, but he doesn't sell hush, fall control, or aural decoy. But how can 1 person develope and use these items when someone else also has it? Its quiet possible that Griggs had been to sens fortress and came back after dying and decided to go into a place full of thieves to assassinate someone. That might be why there is a corpse right next to him. Or the dead sorcerer made the spells and possibly the ring and Griggs just came and killed him. Maybe the dead sorcerer was originally supposed to assassinate Logan but now that he's dead Griggs was assigned to kill him. The description of hush says that spooks from the Vinheim Dragon School were extremely expensive. Upon death Griggs drops 1000 souls, upon death the legendary sorcerer Big Hat Logan who's soul spear is said to have been equal to Lord Gwyns lightening also drops 1000 souls. Griggs has probably killed in the past. Lets look at his other gear.

His weapons include a normal catalyst (nothing special), a mail breaker, and a small leather shield. The mail breaker has a crit modifier and as the name suggests can stab someone wearing chain armor. His shield is small but effective, he can easily parry and riposte a target. His arsenal is set up to murder anyone he needs to. He can cast hush while hiding on a rooftop in a dark alleyway, drop behind his target and slit his throat, then cast aural decoy to distract all the guards and hysterical bystanders, and use his armor to slip away into the shadows.

Now lets talk about them both in firelink shrine. When we save them both they sit right next to each other. Judging by all the other things I stated its probably because of the fact they they're the only 2 mages. Its not because they know one another. Griggs is the only person who mentions Logan, Logan never says anything about Griggs. And lastly when you attack one of them the other won't come to help. Its not because the devs just didn't think about it, when you attack Reah or one of her followers you get ganked by all of them.

When we find Griggs he's just a few levels behind sens. When Logan is in the archives Griggs is in sens. He obviously trying to stalk him.

These are my thought on Griggs and Logan, it took me over 1.5 hours to make this post so I would love to hear your opinion.

    Hilarious invasion

    Posted: 11 May 2020 11:13 PM PDT

I play through the game almost entirely hollow unless I'm fighting bosses. I'm shit, I know, I just like being in the world.

Anyways, I wanted to kindle the lower fire before Ornstein and Smough, so I reversed my hollowing, kindled it, and went on my merry way to die to the archers again.

So I get passed the giants, I get passed the hellkites or whatever those fucks with selectively vestigial wings are called, and as I'm going up the semi-covered buttress I get invaded. I wish I could remember their name.

Since I'm always hollow I don't get to dual much, the previous time I was invaded I waved at the invader thinking we could goof off a big and just got one hitted before the gesture was over. So I'm not up for fighting this guy, I'll lose for sure. I give it a go anyways. He bows first, I bow, then we go while on the covered side of the pillar between the two buttresses. We each get some good hits in but I'm clearly losing, having to burn through my estus just to keep up. So I say fuck it, time for a different MO.

I start kiting him around the pillar. Arrows are raining down on us, I never expected myself to be so deft at dodging them. We circle and circle and circle. He stops, I predict this, we change directions. This happens for a minute or two and his the funniest moment I've ever had while playing DS. He is trying SO HARD to catch me around a corner and just can't manage. He's getting pegged by arrows occasionally. This is just a war of attrition. Then it happened. Invader Vanquished.

I couldn't stop laughing. I was so outclassed and out matched and if I was invaded anywhere else I surely wouldn't have lasted more than 2 minutes. However, I didn't see them actually die, so I'm wondering - can invasions time out?

Either way I'll never forget that. Too god damned funny.

And of course I died to the archers right after but I did not care.

Whats your most unexplained and weirdest death?

    Posted: 11 May 2020 02:05 PM PDT

So there I was, taking a moment to bask in my glory. I had successfully beaten the rafter boss after 15 attempts. Its minons had been hurled to the floor below, and I had made it! Me! Slayer of so called "gods", some gods, they were defeated by a non magical hunk of iron and an arm to swing it! Me! Who had slain demons, and drakes alike with impunity. Me! Who had wrestled through armies of forest crazed ghost people. I was proud. So there I was, standing by the ladder down, so I could make my way to summon the amazingly mobile stone elevator that prolly weighed 800 tons, yet somehow, after thousands of years of neglect still worked without needing more fluid, and perfect alignment that defied gravity, when I set my controller down. Just to bask in the moment. Note, no hands on the controller. None. In fact I was 5 feet away, just in case. After a moment I picked up my controller and pushed the A button. To get on the ladder. A, for action, not B for back peddle or dash or roll.

My character, on its own, 180'ed and leap rolled right off the edge to his death.

To say I yelled obscenities is an understatement. I threated my uncaring game with deletion.

of course I got right back to it....this is dark souls of course...

    Egg Head Hatch?

Question about the lore, why would you want to kindle the first flame?

    Posted: 11 May 2020 11:46 PM PDT

From what I understand the whole reason Gwyn kindled the flame was out of fear of the dark and humans. But you're human, so wouldn't you want the dark to spread as humans are made of the dark soul?

Why even go do this and not let the flame burn out and let the age of dark begin?

Ornstein & Smudge are destroying my soul!

    Posted: 11 May 2020 09:45 PM PDT

In a kinda good semi-masochistic way though lol, total noob first timer here, started playing last week, seriously did not expect to enjoy it this much. I'm not gonna summon because I've come this far without it & nearly killed both of them (Ornstein dead, Smudge at a quarter HP.). Not even looking for tips I just feel the need to vent my insanity after 3 hours straight fighting. So here goes.....

    AAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!

Feels better lol. Now, back to the arena!

Also, whilst I'm here, is Dark Souls II any good?? Heard some real mixed reactions from friends and family on that, contemplating doing Demon, Bloodborne & 3 after and maybe 2 if it holds up to 1.

    Kicking reliability is horrible

    Posted: 11 May 2020 12:34 PM PDT

I just started playing DS1 Remastered on PC with mouse and keyboard. The reliability of kicking is really annoying. Everything else about the game I have been able to figure out just fine. It's like 50/50 that my character will actually kick when I want him to. It makes fighting those skeletons with spears and shields a pain in my butt. Any tips?

The best strength weapon? (For PVE)

    Posted: 12 May 2020 12:29 AM PDT

Right now I am liking the black knight halberd and the Man-Serpent Greatsword, but are there any weapons that are amazing with strength builds? I would love to dedicate myself to a weapon, and if I do I might as well pick the most OP one. And if it helps, my "playstyle" does not matter. I happen to be pretty flexible when it comes to that. Thanks!

    I'm a New(ish) Player, is Spear + Shield OP?

    Posted: 11 May 2020 09:46 PM PDT

My first dark souls game was Dark Souls 3, and I enjoyed that game a lot and played through it a couple of times. My favorite type of playstyle was to use a pure strength build with a greatshield, since I love the feeling of being an impenetrable wall.

Going into Dark Souls 1, I knew that the spear + shield combo moveset actually worked without you randomly taking damage trying to trade, but holy hell, I did not expect it to be so effective.

I apparently lucked out and rolled a tower shield in undead parish, and once I equipped that it felt like a lot of bosses could barely touch me. Once I upgraded it to the Greatshield of Artorias and paired that with a Demon's Spear, it felt like I was unstoppable. No boss felt like it could threaten me, since for some friggin reason doing a spear + shield combo attack completely negates all knockback from any attack that hits your shield.

Did I, by chance, stumble upon one of the most broken builds in the game? Or am I just good with a shield and spear? The entire DLC pretty much felt like a cakewalk, and this was on my first playthrough, so I was a little surprised at how easy everything felt, especially compared to Dark Souls 3.

So Ornstein and Smough is a good fight but...

    Posted: 12 May 2020 03:43 AM PDT

It's the one of the most janky and bullshit fights I've seen so far in the game beaten probably only by Capra Demon.

The whole idea is good and the fight starts off and ends great. But the visual glitches and inconsistency of the game's rules are bugging me.

First off (and this is largely the criticism of the whole game): if enemies can hit through walls you should too. And it's fine the way it is but in this fight it leads to some bs. Why can Ornstein hit and shoot through Smough? I sometimes don't have enough time to react just because I didn't see the warning animation.

Secondly: The animations and hitboxes on Ornstein are really bad. Sometimes his thrusting-from-another-corner-of-the-map attack is stopped and then continued without a warning after 5-6 seconds of him purely standing and turning in one place. In the remaster these things should have been fixed first place for f**** sake. And like any spear in this game his weapon hits you 2 meters from where you're actually standing in the other direction.

The fight is really good but the execution is really sloppy. I've been overhyped for this fight and this is largely disappointing. I've beaten them on my 10th time and the fight was really good but the glitches were killing it for me.

Btw maybe I should have killed Smough first as avoiding his attacks was a lot easier even though he did have some hitbox and/or animation problems too.

Also I just feel that I am the only one who gets those problems because this fight is called the best in soulsborne by a lot of players.

Key Differences between each DS Game?

    Posted: 11 May 2020 09:38 PM PDT

So I recently started the original DS1 because it somehow made its way into my owned games on Xbox. I just got past the hellhole of Sen's Fortress and I'm really enjoying the game.

Here's the thing: I'm considering getting the whole trilogy, and I'm totally okay with stopping my progress in DS1 to start fresh in DS1 Remastered. However, I've heard people have had issues with DS2 and DS3 when comparing it to DS1.

What are the big differences between the games? What changed in DS2 or DS3?

[XBOX]: I'll give you treasure for your useless Pendant

    Posted: 11 May 2020 09:15 PM PDT

Hey, there. I've nearly acquired every item the game has to offer. One of the very few missing pieces is the Pendant (not the Broken Pendant), which is acquired as a starting gift (no thanks), by letting Petrus kill Rhea (did not work for me), or by farming as a Forest Hunter (not feeling it).

So...if anyone has a Pendant they are willing to part with, I'm down to trade something, as long as it's not a slab or something I only have one of. Almost everything else should be fair game. Even have some spare Fire Keeper souls.

If interested, please let me know what you need. Thanks!

I gave the Blacksmith dude the Divine Flame thing because he said he would craft me a good weapon with it, but I haven’t got anything back. [DS1, no spoilers please]

    Posted: 11 May 2020 07:35 PM PDT

So after I killed that Butterfly on the bridge boss I got a Divine Flame (I think that's what it was called) and the blacksmith in the place right before the forest said he'd craft me a good weapon with it, but I've come back to him after killing the Sword Wolf in the forest and he still hasn't given me anything. Did I get conned or is there something else I'm supposed to do?
