As the undead become hollow because they lose their purpose in life and as the tenets of Optimistic Nihilism argue that purpose isn't birthed out of the commands of some omnipotent diety or created out of thin air but instead is to be found in the trenches of everyday living, that is the thing which no-one can take from you.

Beat Ornstein and Smough on my first try

    Posted: 20 May 2020 12:27 PM PDT

You know, it was really easy, probably the easiest fight in the game. I just walked in and...

Ha ha no it took me like 50 tries.

That damn ledge! My least favorite part of the game.

    Posted: 21 May 2020 02:03 AM PDT

Just a rant. I am a serial addict to this game. I've played through more times than I can remember.

Ornstein and Smough is one tough battle, but I never feel dread in my heart when I get ready to meet them again - as much as I do that damn ledge to get into the castle!

I almost NEVER get it on the first try. I always get up to the archer blocking the ledge and that's were a myriad of things can go wrong.

1 - Get shot in the back.

2 - Get knocked off while trying to block or dodge an arrow.

3 - Confronting the knight and just getting killed or knocked off.

And the REAL PROBLEM is that you get set back so damn far and have to do it all again!!!

1 - Wait for the spiral elevator (seems longer each time as my patience thins).

2 - Run that LONG PATH to the gate.

3 - OK. So you can basically run past most of the guards before that final archer knight, but when you are on a third or fourth run and your patience is running thin... WAM! something goes wrong and you get set back again.

But once inside :D ahhh... So soothing. So victorious. That bonfire waiting for you in the first door and Solaire of Astoria relaxing there to greet you :)

This is seriously the most painful part of the game for me. At least with Ornstein and Smough you are not set back so far and it's continuous action. And you can even get help if you want!

    But that damn ledge!

Ok. I just needed to vent.

And at last, I am inside the castle once more!

How does Seath get in and out of his room at the top of the Duke's Archives?

    Posted: 20 May 2020 05:29 AM PDT

I mean, the single door in the room is way too small for him to use. Does the roof retract, and that's how he flies down to the Crystal Cave?

What is this severed hand holding a zweihandler in the cathedral of Anor Londo? Never seen it before.

    Dark Souls Stereotypes?

    Posted: 21 May 2020 01:52 AM PDT

Hello my fellow Undead, I'm here posing an odd thought that came to mind and wanted to ask. What are some Stereotypes of reoccurring themes you've seen during your online interactions? I mean along the lines of people who use certain Armour or weapons, and I don't mean just in DS1, but along the lines of the entire series.

Here are some one's I've noticed

    1. Havel Set - Either META or Ganker, usually using an 'OP' weapon or something deemed as the META
    2. Starter Set - Either new player who hasn't figured out how to change Armour yet, or a pro whose experienced in using a classes starting gear
    3. Fashion Souls - These guys are usually way more chill than most players, typically more experienced to compensate for their possibly lower defenses and more often than not use a signature weapon that isn't widely used for some reason and/or is unique
    4. Giant Armour, depending on the head piece it could be just a Giant Dad or a Cancer Dark Beed build
    5. Rare Armour - Any that need to be farmed or found out of the way tend to be on the more experienced or veteran side, typically with a strong but not overly powerful weapon
    6. Meme armour - The Xanthous Crown, Mask of the Father, and bloated head usually either go to Gankers going for a uniform look, use meme weapons, or are just messing around. If the later are usually cool dudes
    7. Anything Meta - Try hards who rarely humor the idea of honor or a fair fight, and usually point down if they win

    I beat ng+ yesterday...

    Posted: 21 May 2020 12:23 AM PDT

For the very first time in over 2 years of playing dark souls remastered I finally did it! Gwynn in ng+ is really hard to me tho, at lvl 40 endurance he guard broke me on every attack and he does SO MUCH damage! I summoned solaire in the end cuz I suck at parrying Gwynn.

HURRAH!! After many days of Manus putting his abyss in my catacombs...

    Posted: 21 May 2020 04:04 AM PDT

.... I finally filled his man cavern with my estus flask!

It was a pretty intense fight! Up to now he's easily the most difficult boss I've faced in DSR (now it's Kalameet's turn, then Gwyn's). I think I had so much trouble with Manus because it seems you must dodge at the last second (I'm under the impression that his attacks follow me), unlike the other bosses. At first I kept dodging too soon and, well, got one shotted most of the times. Thanks to the silver pendant phase 2 was a lot more manageable than phase 1!

What are your thoughts about him? Easy boss/hard boss? He also has a cool music and arena (tomb of the giants is darker than the abyss, lol).

PS : I saved puppy Sif.... and the cutscene I got before the boss fight was so, so sad. Sif, why do you have to make things harder (and he limps when he's close to dying!! come on, whoever designed this boss fight is a sadistic animal hater lol)? Just gimme the fucking ring so I can kill the four kings! I won't share Artorias' fate! I'm the Chosen Undead after all! Sometimes I wish Sif was just a fat cannibal bastard like Smough so I don't feel like a Smough when I kill him. PPS : sorry for my english

    Help with the Depths

    Posted: 21 May 2020 05:27 AM PDT

Hello everyone. Just recently decided to give Dark Souls another go (rage quit at the Taurus Demon a few months back, which I look back on ashamedly) and have been absolutely loving it is so far. Got past the Taurus Demon in a flash, struggled through the Bell Gargoyles but got them eventually with the help of some friends rallying me on in a discord call (and my god ringing that bell was glorious). I even managed to beat the Capra Demon in around 7 or 8 tries, something I was super proud of. The pure rush I felt after killing bosses, along with the beautiful scenery and incredible world and lore really inspired me to keep going.

Then I got to the depths.

It went alright at first, only died to the butchers once or twice, even managed to get the giant rat with my bow and get to the bonfire in the depths as I could grab the key from outside the rat's chamber. The awe I felt at the world was swiftly being replaced by tension and dread, but I was doing alright.

Then I fell through a grate in the floor.

Fucking hell. Fuck those oversized frog bitches and fuck the bloody curse. I used the damn bonfire so getting back to Firelink was even harder than it had to be (tried to get my souls, but you know, the whole curse thing) and I grinded for 6000 souls to get two of those purging stones. I have a back-up now just in case, but I am still terrified.

So, finally getting to the point, can someone please give me some advice on how to get through the area and to the Gaping Dragon without going down there again? Every time I try to get past I fall. I do not care if I have to die to the channeler or the rats 50 times, but if I fall down to those tunnels again, I might have a heart attack.

Thanks for reading the essay, and my god, please help.

Rings for my inner "got gud"??

    Posted: 21 May 2020 03:52 AM PDT

I am quite fond of the series. I feel I am moderately ruthless in pve and.... Fair... In pvp. But I am trying to break two crutches. Ones we probably all share. The Havel/favor rings. And magic. My first real melee character was a stat intensive Havel armor wearing iron flesh casting quickstep weapon equipped monstrosity in ds3. And it was fun. But I really need a new playthrough.. I have decided I'm going to run a silver knight armor with zweihand and an estoc offhand through the whole series. But now I'm worrying about poise and defenses in ways I never thought about before because I won't be able to just fall back on a bag of tricks. So now I am really stuck on rings and need varying viewpoints on alternate ring options for this respective game. Any advice is welcome. Thank you!

    Possible spoiler regarding DS3?

    Posted: 20 May 2020 10:21 PM PDT

Idk what people consider spoilers anymore since I'm not sure if anyone hasn't played DS3 or what not. So I'll just put that just in case.

But I just reached Anor Londo and climbed the buttress into the chapel and pushed the lever on the spinning tower that's just like the spinning tower in DS3 at Anor Londo, the lever is on the left and the place looks identical to the place where you fight Aldrich. The door is locked so I can't see inside but where the bonfire is in DS3 there's a note on the ground in ds Anor Londo (right of the lever) where the bonfire in DS3 would be and it says 'bonfire?'

So am I in irithyll then I don't get where I'm at. DS3 is in the far future to my understanding so has irithyll not been built yet or something? Pretty freakin cool tho

Edit: haha Gwyndolin has the same boss music as aldrich, funny, and he also has an annoying bow

Skinny demons in Anor Londo AI changed in remastered?

    Posted: 21 May 2020 03:25 AM PDT

So I've played the game several times on both Ps3 and the 360, and almost every time I face the 3 skinny, lightning spear wielding demons before the Archers (not the 2 right before, I mean the 3 before them), they have dodged backwards, falling to their deaths.

However, I am now on Ng+ of Remastered for ps4 and they have yet to do this classic move.

Has their AI been changed in this rerelease?

The game tries to tell you need a +10 weapon

    Posted: 21 May 2020 04:38 AM PDT

In Sen's fortress there are nine large shards, enough to upgrade from a +5 to +10 if you don't know about the leeches

Can I parry barehanded and question about bonfires going into NG+

    Posted: 21 May 2020 12:40 AM PDT

So if I'm holding a sword in my right hand and nothing in my left, can I parry with my bare left hand? My guy does the parry animation... I mean I could test it but wanted to ask here since I'm not great at parrying in this game yet. Also looked online and couldn't find a clear answer

Also when I go into NG+ do all my bonfires that I kindled remain kindled, that is do I have to rekindle them with humanities to get more flasks? And can I still warp from bonfire to bonfire or would I need to get the lordvessel again?

After all these years, has anyone every determined with proof(like datamining/testing on video/etc) if message ratings give humanity? I still see differing opinions.

    Posted: 20 May 2020 10:26 PM PDT

Something reminded me of this and I started digging around. I've found a number of threads from before this was allegedly proven false that sound quite genuine about people getting soft humanity from messages. At the same time, there are tons of people saying it was proven false but I never see any proof beyond randomforumposter saying they tested it with their friend(despite theory being that it takes several messages to gain a humanity, not just one) or just "it was a rumor, it's false" with no explanation of how that was proven false.

Has this ever been actually proven for sure one way or another? Through datamining? Actual thorough testing on video from a respected community member? Something else?
