No Death No Bonfire Run Attempt 47: SUCCESS

    Posted: 24 May 2020 06:55 AM PDT

Look who's back. Im guessing most of y'all have forgotten about me by now. Its been a week or two which in internet terms might as well be a lifetime. For a quick refresher for those that were here back then. Im that one guy doing that one run. For those of you that are new here: hello there (cue prequel noises) Ill give a quick rundown of the story so far.

A young boy in search of less boredom and more soulslike content ponders what game he should buy to quell the lockdown boredom. It was DS2 obviously, Id played DS1 and DS3 and had in fact 100% achievemented (thats a word) DS1 and done a deathless DS1 run too.

I played through the game pretty casually for my first run, by the end of the game I was using dual wielded Smelter Swords (multicoloured, very pretty). I went and beat all the DLC and whatnot too, I beat every single boss except Aldia as I didnt realise I needed to kill Vendrick before Nashandra... oops. All in all it was great fun despite me not liking the mechanics and stuff quiite as much as DS1. I then decided, you know whatd be a great idea to do in a game that youve only played through once...

    DEATHLESS BONFIRE-LESS RUN

And thats how it all began... so as you can imagine this didnt go too well at the start. It took me like 10 tries to even get to the gutter. I started off loosely following ymfah's guide but then ended up developing my own strategies for the majority of the game. There were some great runs and some... not so great (why does Majula have so many cliffs). After a few days of trying and trying, I took a little break. I came back and started hammering it out again. I even made it all the way to Amana. But then I took another, longer break where I went to go play other games with some friends and whatnot with the odd shortlived attempt inbetween. Then, the other day, I decided to throw a few more attempts at it and finally...

Attempt 47: This started off fairly well, I killed the Last Giant without taking a hit. Didnt take too much dumb damage on the way to Pursuer and then decided to parry Pursuer for the style points. Grabbed some Large shards on the way to crazy blacksmith man. Had a very close call with a ledge thanks to one of the great machete fellows but it all worked out and I firebombed my way in. Picked up the shards and boned home. Grabbed myself a rapier and got it to +6. Then levelled up (20 VIG 6 END 12 STR 12 DEX 19 ADP).

Running through Heides is pretty simple, I only kill the first two knights. I then coaxed the dragonrider to fall off the edge (Ol' honey at the bottom a giant chasm trick, works every time). No man's wharf is... fairly easy now. But it wasnt always that way, I used to find it quite tricky on this run but Ive since developed a pretty good strat and havent died down there since. Flexile is an easy boss 'Nuff Said.

Back to the Bastille! I run through most of the enemies here, making sure to pick up the 2 flame butterflys in the explody room (only noticed these on attempt 40 or something). Also, just after the dogs, the room with the crossbowmen. This room is the only thing before like undead crypt (seen as Ive not been there too often) that I dont have a consistent strat for. I just run through, sometimes they hit me, sometimes they dont. I have no idea how or why. Luckily, its never caused anything more than a nuisance. Running up to Sinners rise, I have to use one of my repair powders here (dont worry, we have 4 by this point). Now for the only summon I used on this route: I summon Lucatiel to kill the 2nd flexile because I dont like fighting it in the water. I sort of justify this with saying I literally just killed one so its just to speed things up but homestly, if I could go back - I wouldnt summon her. Anyway, I send her home and make quick work of Lady Sinner. And use her cosy little campfire to get home. I then buy some alluring skulls, a cat ring and a +3 mace. I level up once again (23 VIG 22 END 26 ADP) and make my way down the hole.

The gutter is honestly the easiest area for me at this point. I just run straight through and get 20 free lifegems. The Gulch is much the same. I drop of by Lucatiel then drop off again to see the giants and Massacre the Rotten in no time flat. Back home we go! I bump up my mace to +4 (very important) and level up again (~28 VIG/END)

Time for the spooky woods, I bash my way through to the forest with my mace fairly easily. Sprint through and then use my rapier to kill the invisidudes on the other side. (Make sure to grab the chunk). Najka is pretty easy now that I dont have to make her knock down the flame butterfly tree, just stand by her side, bait out the big tail whack and jab her in the eye a bunch. Sprint through Pharros and the start of Tseldora (making use of a sexy skull) all the way to the magus and congregation. An easy if annoying "boss". Smack the magus with the mace then switch to rapier for the lightning dudes and clean up with whatever after that. Run downstairs to the spiders and the weird blobby mage thing. Then plunge off to kill the most annoying lizard in the history of mankind. Grab the chunks and slab along the way. Make use of more skulls for opening the doors. Light a torch, bait a laser, kill a spooder, touch a big fire and go home. Level up some more (33 VIG 32 END 32 ADP). Get your rapier to +10 and mace to +7.

Were finally on to the last Lord Soul. The Copse is fairly easy to run through. I kill the scythe invader on the hill through my immense parry skills ( ;P). Skeleton lords do almost no damage (make sure to use the mace for this). Harvest valley is pretty simple, the only extra things I do are pick up the chunks for my mace, get praise the sun and kill as many enemies via poison as I can. Jabba dies from a few tail pokes. Earthen Peak is one of the harder areas in the run as the manakins can bleed and kill you fairly quickly but theyre also fairly easy to take down. Make sure to kill the windmill then you pretty much jusy run to Mytha. Now, I have to confess that I lied earlier. I also summon here because its just too funny to punch and throw firebombs at mytha while thomas destroys her. Shes incredibly easy either way, its just more fun to try and punch her to death this way than dps her with the rapier.

Iron keep... is the 2nd hardest area in the run. At this point Ive gotten rlly consistent at it but early on it was a huge challenge. I normally just quit out to get rid of Sharron but this time I tried something different, if you quickly get rid of the Allone Knights in the first couple rooms, you can run around in circles, jumping off from the little alcove thingy and then plunge her as she comes up the stairs over and over again. I then buy soem pine resin and a repair powder. I use some arrows to bait out some of the enemies to make them easier to kill, theres a couple enemies that you can make walk into fire and whatnot which is always fun. I cant actually remember if its necesssary or not but I always kill the tit lizard in the room with the elevated platforms. Its a fairly straightforward run to the OINK (thankyou bryankc) after the first couple rooms. The boss itself is the most stressful point in the run not because hes difficult. Not because hes a challenge. Because hes not, you hide in a corner and wait for a laser. But its so stressful because he has some pretty friggin suspicious hitboxes and any hit could kill you. Anyway, I manage to kill him and can finally breathe again. Finally we can head to Drangleic Castle. I level up (40 VIG 40 END).

I use a homeward bone to warp straight to the ruined fork road bonfire and run to drangleic. KILL THE TIT LIZARD then I bone/run back to Majula and get my mace to +10 as well as my bow to +5 or so. Buy lightning arrows and repair powder from the spoopy boi. The castle itself isnt too bad, dragonriders are so very easy, I beat them without getting hit. You do a bit of running around, kill an undead pony. And youre on to a very reflecty boi. I murder all the stony ponys with lightning arrows then run straight to him and poke the everloving shit out of him.

On to Amana. I dont have much to say here other than lightning arrows and patience, as long as youre careful, nothing here will kill you. The Red Iron Winblade room is a little scary but its nothing you cant handle. Run past the invader (he does a lot of damage and its fookin terrifying). Now murder a frog.

Undead crypt is pretty straightforward, you use arroes to kill the sorcerers and run past everything else. Velstadt on the other hand is actually a challenging boss. Keep in mind that at this point, Id only ever fought him once - on my first ever playthrough. I use my one and only lightning resin for him and manage to take him down after a few close calls.

Were into the final stretch now! I level up before heading to Aldia's Keep (~43 END/VIG 39 ADP). The area itself is super easy as you dont rlly have to fight anything except Aslatiel whos a goddamned joke. Angry bird in cage goes down super easily if you just bait out stomps and grounded breath attacks. The Aerie can be entirely skipped via zipwire so yay. Dragons shrine I was kinda nervous about. The drakekeepers arent too bad (kill the mace guy with arrows, he is BS). And I saved my poison arrows/knives making the crazy dragon man surprisingly painless to kill.

The Ashen Mist heart lets us go back to FoFG to kill Last Giant But With A Big Sword. He is easy enough though if he hits you with the sword, you will know about it. I take him down then head back to Majula for the final level up (50 END 50 VIG). I bone back to the form road and run all the way to the throneys.

This is easily the most challenging fight in the run however, we are prepared. We have charcoal resin which theyre incredibly weak to as well as a brightbug we bought right after the last giant. The way I killed them was by getting Throne Watcher to low health very early on, then getting some damage on Defender whilst shes away buffing. Its then a lot of patience whilst you wait for the right opportunity to attack, I get Defender down to about a third HP then go in for the kill on Watcher. Once shes down, the fight is essentially over, start attacking Defender and hell go down ASAP, he didnt even get a chance to try and resurrect the other one for me.

But wait! Theres more! Nashandra is honestly the most dissapointing final boss, she does almost nothing. The only thing that rlly did any damage to me was the little curse orbs. Eventually I wittle her down (with the odd arrow for good measure) and finally... its over. Im done. I won.

    Praise. The. Mother. Fucking. Sun

47 attempts. And Ive done it. Even that final run alone took over 4 hours. Hell yeah! The Illusory rings are mine

Wow, this was a journey and a half, I went from beating the game pretty casually on my first run. To 46 Attempts at a No Death No Bonfire Challenge where I initially knew almost nothing about the game. All the way to beating said challenge and feeling like I could beat the game blindfolded at this point. For those of you that read (and enjoyed??) My previous posts. Thankyou for all the support. Seeing other people take up and even complete the challenge along side me was super encouraging. Thankyou all. And good luck to any of yoy who try anything like this in the future.

    • signing out for the final time, its that one guy, doing that one run.

Dark souls 2 is important (possible spoilers)

    Posted: 24 May 2020 09:12 AM PDT

I was inspired to make this post after seeing a lot of opinions that ds2 doesn't really fit in the trilogy or that it's events aren't important to the main story etc. I'm not saying that your opinions are wrong I'd just like to share mine.

Ds2 does 2 very important things for the series, firstly it gives insight to the undead curse, and secondly to the cycle of fire.

One thing ds2 does really well is it puts the player in the shoes of a character who is afflicted with the curse. I know you were undead in other games too just hear me out. In ds1 you were the chosen undead and in ds3 you're the ashen one, but in ds2 you're simply a bearer of the curse. Basically in the other two games while you may still be undead, you start the game with a title, a purpose. In ds2 you start without any title to set you apart from anyone else, and in the beginning you don't really have any real purpose, you're just told to get stronger or go hollow.

You start the game just like everyone else in the world, a nobody with nothing and with no purpose. It's not until you get your first great soul that it feels (at least for me anyway) like you now have a reason to keep playing. In the beginning it can be easy to stop playing because it feels like you aren't really doing anything, and if you do your character essentially goes hollow.

I don't need to tell you that the game is long and can be painful and demanding, and sometimes simply giving up, or playing something else seems like the better option, just go hollow.

The opening cinematic isn't a grand battle or awakening lords, it's you, losing everything, and you not caring anymore.

All this put together really puts into perspective the weight of the undead curse, losing everything, giving up, hollowing. And it makes the player feel just like the character, and only the player who can persevere, will never go hollow, and overcome the burden of suffering the curse. Every time you die you lose a piece of you (health bar yknow) and every time you die it gets easier and easier to get frustrated and quit, this in my opinion is a genius way to describe to the player how awful the curse is.

Part two of this post is about the cycle of flame in ds2.

Ds2 is almost like one of those stories you tell kids so they won't be bad. It's a journey through a land which has become victim to the curse of the fading flame, which is all because of the cycle which is product to the events of ds1.

In ds1, when I played it, it seemed like linking the first flame was the key to fixing everything and it felt right to me (I'm not a lore buff so idk if ds1 mentions the fate of the cycle at all).

Then came ds2, which opened my eyes to the atrocity of the splendor I worked so hard to achieve back in ds1. Linking the flame cause a cycle to begin of the world falling into ruin and someone trying to fix it again. Ds2 takes place during a time in ruin, just like each other game, however following ds1, it does a marvelous job imo of telling the player not only just how bad the curse gets as a result of the cycle, but also it's inevitability.

King vendric ( I think anyway) instead of ascending the throne of want, ran away from it, because he didn't want to simply start a new cycle (or was it nashandra who scared him?) either way, he abandoned the flame, until you came along, and continued the cycle. You don't even get an alternate ending in the base game, you just simply ascend the throne, and if you don't, then someone else will.

In short, ds2 tells us that no matter what, the cycle will continue, as it has for so many ages already, and it hasn't fixed anything.

Continuing the cycle and beating the game almost seems, pointless? Like a disappointing end to a long journey.

To combine my two points I've explained, the first 2/3 of ds2 is simply proving that you have the willpower to persevere to the end, I don't think of it like a test of might and souls, more of a test of your mind. Are you truly the next monarch.

After that you finely get to drangleic castle and it's, almost disappointing. The boring empty rooms, the reskinned boss, the generally short length of the area. It's not as grand as anor londo, it's vacant, undeserving of any praise at all. But isn't that the point?

You worked so hard to get there and for what? Just like you worked so hard in ds1 just for ds2 to roll around. Everything you've been doing has been for nothing.

You get to vendric, expecting and epic final showdown, similar to how Gwin, even tho hollow, came after you with ferocity. But instead he doesn't even notice you, he doesn't even attack you when you hit him, only when you do enough damage does he swat you like a fly, without effort or passion, just exterminating the pest.

TL:DR: dark souls 2 doesn't have any areas or people who are pivotal in the overall story like anor londo or Gwin, but ds2 provides the perspective into the undead curse and ultimately the realization that the cycle needs to be ended, which leads into ds3 really well

P.S. I'm not the best at lore or formatting so if I made any error please excuse them:)

Dark Souls 2 has something that 1 and 3 don't and I don't know how to explain it

    Posted: 24 May 2020 11:53 AM PDT

Recently I got my friend into DS and I played the games alongside him (no co-op, I just played while he was too). I probably beat all 3 games ~10 times each (and by beat I mean 100% everything, I don't count partial playthroughs or speedruns).

I played DS up to Lordvessel and did the DLC but then quit. The latter half of the game felt so unappealing.

I played DS 3 up to Road of Sacrifices and quit. I just can't like this game for some reason. The linearity, boring early weapons, Bloodborne leftovers and "hey remember this from DS 1" suck so much.

I beat DS 2 100% in 2 days (1 day for base game 1 day for DLCs).

Yes it has shitty, clean, repeating textures. Yes it has weird movement and adaptability. Yes it has a game-y feel to level design. Yes it has mob spam.

But it is so fucking good.

Finished Dark souls 2 for the first time

    Posted: 24 May 2020 04:36 AM PDT

    Spoilers!

The soundtrack at the end made me want to cry. I think it's funny in how many ways these games makes you wanna cry like, the difficulty, your favorite NPC (lucatiel of Mirrah in my case) slowly hollowing out and losing herself, a daughter not remembering her father, the depressing hope in the face of the hopeless world shown by the Emerald Herald and then the glowing joy of accomplishment after overcoming every single difficulty.

No FUCKING wonder this franchise is one of my favorites of all time.

    Now onwards to the DLC!

I love the harvest valley/earthen peak

    Posted: 24 May 2020 02:47 AM PDT

I know this is a quite contrasting opinion but I'm currently replaying through dark souls 2 softs waiting for some juicy elden ring news and holy cow I love the atmosphere of these areas.

I don't really know why but it gives me some mad max fury road vibes, I mean, seeing a gigantic windmill surrounded by poisonous wastelands that were once a flourishing agricultural gold mine just looks cool to me.

Plus I don't really find these areas any hard, I mean thanks to my +10 mace most manniquin die in like 2 hits and pyromancers are hardly a threat anyway.

My only complaint would be the magical lift to Iron Keep though.

I started DS2 some days ago and I think I'm halfway through the game. Today I went back to No-Man's Wharf just to butcher everything in the area. You have no idea of the satisfaction I had...

So... I just got invaded in the Dark Chasm of Old.

    Posted: 24 May 2020 12:04 PM PDT

*Rant Alert* Didn't even know that was possible. A guy named Hitler teleported to one-shot backstab me and corrupted my save file. He gave me max soul level and 1 in Vitality, Attunement, and Faith and 99 in all other stats. The numbers were broken on the level up screen. It was a character built for a playthrough alongside my friend, we wanted to kill every boss together in each others worlds. Me: Bernie Sanders and him, Donald Trump. We wasted 50 hours. I hate cheaters. I want to die. He just broke me down into tears with such a small, insignificant thing. Only reminded me how addicted I am to Video Games and will never succeded in anything. *End Rant*

Quest of the Royal Sorcerer Navlaan Problem!

    Posted: 24 May 2020 07:32 AM PDT

    Hello all

I 'mess up' the quest on Royal Sorcerer Navlaan

'To start his quest line, you need to talk to him as a hollow without pulling the lever to free him.'

And I push the lever and I was not hollow. So I can only buy things with this NPC and not complete this quest.

I already use bonfire ascetic but don't work.

What I do? It's my firts play and I am trying to get all achievements... I need this quest for a sorcer spell

    Thanks!

Used to raw force or sorcerer range casting so I am not sure I will be good with a cleric but hey let's give it a try.

I'm on new game +++ lvl 233 with a soul memory of 19 mil. Not only is it the most fashionable weapon I've come across so far, and not only does it belong to one of the best NPCs in Souls history, you can acquire two in one playthrough! I personally powerstance two Dark Melus and it works wonders. Give this sword a spin the next time you're going through the game, it's shockingly good when infused.

I'm interested in playing through DS2, but enhanced with a couple mods. Can I be softbanned for using graphical mods, such as reshade, texture mods, etc.? Not cheats or content additions mind you, purely graphical enhancements.

    Posted: 23 May 2020 08:38 PM PDT

I was under the impression the ban system they used is no longer active given the game's age, but I'm still concerned about a ban from online because I enjoy the occasional summon and reading player created-messages. I also want to know if anyone has recently been softbanned for modding ds2?

I've read some posts suggesting softbans happen, but I'd like some more information that's more up to date; I couldn't find a post in 2020.

They'll stand totally still for a few seconds at a time before skipping half their attack animation and instantly getting a hit. I'll get a backstab but half way through the animation they'll move out of the way. Both their hits and mine will just pass through one another.
