Theory: Capra is there for Seath, not the Demons Posted: 31 Mar 2020 05:26 PM PDT Apologies if this has been thought of before, but I just had this train of thought - figured it was worth sharing. What if Seath, most famous for betraying his own kind, also betrayed the Gods in their fight against the Demons? We know that the war against the Demons didn't end in favor of the Gods - or at least that neither side suffered a defeat, or gained a victory. Gwyn went in with the mission to stop the Chaos Flame, and failed. From what we know from the lore, Gwyn believed he and his army could defeat the Demons, or else he probably wouldn't have gone down to Izalith. But something stopped him and his knights from succeeding. There's no real mention of what this was - but what if it was Seath? So, imagine you're Seath. You betray your own kind, yada yada, end up in charge of a glorified library. Start doing your immortality experiments, try to fix those legs of yours, find out the secret is in the scales, not the crystals. You're mad. You've genocided your entire species for nothing. And just down the street is some ego maniac who won't shut up about how great he is, his firstborn is super violent and likes to start shit, you're envious of his wife, you want to perform experiments on his daughter... So, you have sex with his wife (if you subscribe to that theory), trick the firstborn into doing something dumb to get daddy pissed, and betray Gwyn's plans to the Demons. Seath is obviously loyal to no one. He betrayed his own kind, was rewarded a dukedom, and then promptly (in Dark Souls time) started kidnapping the significant others of high ranking members of Gywn's kingdom, like Havel's lost love. You don't kidnap another duke's girlfriend unless you wanna start something, or you truly don't care about allies. I think Seath allied himself with whoever would benefit him the most at the time, and then would stab them in the back as soon as he got what was useful from them. So, Seath probably told the Witches that Gwyn was on his way down for some teeth kicking, and they had time to prepare. They beat back Gwyn's knights, gave them a new coat of armor polish, and sent them on their way home. And how did the Demons thank Seath? Dragons. First off - the dragon butts. They weren't just standing on lava for no reason. The conversation probably went something like this: Witches: "Why on the lava?" Seath: Tears in his shitty eyes because he doesn't have legs: "Real dragons are fire proof." But anyway, all jokes aside, the dragon butts may be there because they needed to test the scales to see if they were working properly - the research that Seath had done into scales and their fire-proofness may even be where the enchantment for Ceaseless' ring originates. But why was Seath using Izalith as his center of operations of dragon experiments? He knew Gwyn would be unable to send his spies there, and he couldn't produce life in the way Demons can. Seath has to procreate like most living things - the Bed of Chaos has the ability to morph life, possibly give life, and even turn stone into living, fire breathing things. Stone, into something sentient. Or, turning something living into stone at least. Seath realized the fastest way to produce a dragon was by using the power of chaos - and eventually, he got that dragon. In the form of Gaping Dragon. According to the Design Works interview, and quoted from Miyazaki: "... it finds itself alone in the world, the last of its race forced to survive in any way it can. As to what triggered this change… well, the emergence of life corrupted it, it was warped by emotion and desire…" And the text for the Dragon King Greataxe: "... formed by the tail of the Gaping Dragon, a distant, deformed descendant of the everlasting dragons." We've always assumed the Gaping Dragon's lineage can be traced up organically back to the Ancient Dragons - but what if Chaos gave birth to it? If there's one thing The Witch of Izalith isn't good at, it's making things pretty. And after getting a dragon with a tiny head, too many wings, and way too many legs, Seath fucks off back to the Archives - then, after being abandoned by Seath, and kicked out from Izalith, the Gaping Dragon started eating shit, pulled a copyright infringement from Alien, and swallowed the Key to the Depths. So Seath continues his experiments trying to make a dragon, makes the Pisacas, Snakemen, and keeps the mad scientist thing going via Chaos magic either taught or provided by the Demons. And then Gwyn rolls up, and's like, "Yo, where were you for, like, twenty years? And wtf is up with the snake people?" And bitch-ass Seath is all like, "Oh, I was gone finding you these creepy fucking flying demons who definitely aren't experiments of me trying to turn humans into dragons to guard your castle and give people rides. And here, put these snake dudes in your fun house, they're just as easy to backstab as your silver pricks." Okay, but anyway, Seath was probably able to change stuff into other stuff because of something he gained from the demons. His magic was based around crystals - even spells like Chameleon, which do morph you into something else, come from Oolacile, not the Archives. This is probably how Seath was able to create the Crystal Golems too - he used the same magic the Bed of Chaos used to create the spicy turd bois in Izalith. So, Gwyn fucks off again, lights himself on fire, the firstborn and his boyfriend pikachu are gone, you have Smough over for tea and flesh every so often, things are pretty good, all things considered. You're the top dog. But, all good things must come to an end. Those pesky undead are making quite a ruckus now, going around the Burg, being rowdy, and trying to ring a stupid bell. So, Seath calls up The Bed, and is like, "Send some dudes up here and show 'em what's what. Remember that one time I told you about Gwyn comin' to town?" Seath, who'd totally bounce his feet as a nervous tick if he could, wants to protect his little dragon babies now, and there's nothing better than a demon bodyguard. So, Taurus and Capra head up to guard two key areas: access to Gaping, and access to the Gargoyles. The Gargoyles also happen to be beings made of stone, who can, again, breathe fire. For them, Taurus picks a bridge on which to ambush you. Capra, however, with the more important asset to guard, takes the time to ally with the thieves, and tame some dogs - then finds the key to the Depths, and waits to gank your ass in an alley. Capra and Taurus didn't go up to the Burg to protect Izalith - they were bodyguards for Seath's assets. If their intended mission was to protect the entrance to Izalith or Quelaag, they would have gone up to the swamp in Blighttown - not the Burg. Think of the damage the two of them would do in that mucky swamp. No, they aren't protecting Quelaag - the people of Blighttown protect the Fair Lady and Quelaag. They are there on Seath's request to the Demons currently in Izalith. Seath even sends his Channelers to make sure the job is done correctly - the Channeler in the Parish, and the boosty boi in the Depths. I expect Seath's treachery to go further than just the Dragons and Gwyn - he probably played a role in the plot against the gods, most likely by passing along key information to the plotters, just like he did when betraying the dragons. Anyway, the long and short of it all is that Seath's smart, he played everyone, and then we played him. After getting ganked by two bad dogs and Capra one hundred times. [link] [comments] |
Estus Flask and White Soapstone Posted: 31 Mar 2020 01:53 PM PDT There's seems to be new players even now. Glad to see it! Attached is how to get the Estus Flask and the White Sign Soapstone with a new character. (Sloppy run) [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Mar 2020 07:12 PM PDT My first dark souls was the third one. I got it around when it came out purely based off of a conversation I had with a friend at the lunch table. I believe I was in my sophomore year of HS at this time and I knew literally nothing about dark souls other than it was hard. So back in 2016 I tried Gundyr like twice and never touched the game again until last year where I must've had 100 different playthroughs after beating the game for the first time. It was really an amazing experience and after killing the soul of cinder I really felt like I did something amazing. But enough about that. I also bought 1 and 2 last year after falling in love with 3. I played 2 first for some odd unknown reason and got basically to the end of the game and stopped the playthrough. It was really confusing and I could see why it was the black sheep of the series. Now in the midst of this global quarantine I finally sat down and beat Dark Souls in 3 days.....and wow. From Ash Lake to Sens fortress this game had me in awe, I could talk about playing it for hours. There was never really a part of the game I could say I wasn't fully enamored in. Even Blightown, which I was shitting my pants to enter after hearing dreadful things about it, was fun to explore. The way everything is connected in this game it feels like I'm back in high school English dissecting a poem but I actually like the subject matter. I just killed Gwyn minutes ago and sat in silence to listen to the end credits music and it just felt like.....monumental. Something about the entire game just felt really sacred and I'm left feeling empty after beating it like I needed more answers like everything happened so fast. I can see why this is considered to be the best one and I have to say it's a hard choice between 3 and this one even though I am really biased but I can say if I played this one first like a normal person it would definitely be my favorite. Just the story of a chad who had never heard of dark souls turning into the biggest fanboy armed to the teeth with collectibles and shirts and now that I finally took the time to beat the first game I feel cemented in the fandom. Don't know if anyone cares to read but I had to rant after finally beating it. Cheers. [link] [comments] |
Can you hear others ring their bell in Blighttown? Posted: 31 Mar 2020 08:16 PM PDT I've never experienced it, but people certainly aren't killing Quelaag as frequently as the gargoyles. [link] [comments] |
Just Beat Dark Souls for the First Time Posted: 31 Mar 2020 10:25 PM PDT I'm so glad I kept coming back to it over the years after giving up on the first boss over and over. I was able to power through this in the last couple of months. The music, lore, weapons, armor, enemies, and environments have put this game in my personal top 10 of all time. Now I've heard a lot of people have mixed opinions on Dark Souls 2 (apparently Miyazaki didn't work on it) but I'm still excited to play. What I'm REALLY anticipating is playing Dark Souls 3. I also appreciate this community because I lurked and used tons of the strategies posted here, so thanks! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Mar 2020 10:32 AM PDT So I was doing and Item and Enemies randomizer run. Usually the boss models in the cutscenes are a mess but sometimes they create a masterpiece like this one. Iron Golem on all four would definetely be terrifying. After a dozen or so randomized runs i definetely recommend them to anyone :D [link] [comments] |

Who can help me at Lothric Castle with Dragonslayer armor boss? (XBOX1 Posted: 01 Apr 2020 03:50 AM PDT |
I slandered a poor undead by calling them a liar Posted: 31 Mar 2020 09:50 PM PDT I was clearing through the lower part of Sen's fortress and on climbing out I saw a message on the ground that said "illusory wall ahead" or something similar. So I roll into the wall and nothing happened. I of course assumed that this was yet another fake illusory wall message and wrote my own message saying "liar ahead" because it was the first fake message I had seen without another message calling it out. Later I was looking through a thread in this very sub and found someone talking about a illusory wall in Sen's fortress you have to hit to get through. So I start up the game and make my way to that same wall and, lo and behold, striking the wall revealed it was in fact, an illusion. I went to my message to delete it and saw that it had a rating of five, meaning that at least a few people might have actually read my message, thought the other message was a lie, and went on without discovering the wall and I feel bad about that. TL;DR: I'm dumb and said another message was a lie even though it wasn't and people believed me. [link] [comments] |

Wolf's ring vs. Havel's ring: let's debate. Posted: 31 Mar 2020 11:35 AM PDT So I've had an internal debate that's drawn out to the end of me developing each build I've made (6 so far!) It always comes down to the wire and is always the final decision when adding those finishing touches to a good build. I've had this arguement with myself a thousand times and wanted to let some of you savages come join the fun. Today's debate is the wolf's ring vs havel's ring. We all know and love havels ring. Massive boost to equipment load, letting you fast roll in some chunky armors. Weve all tanked with the wolf's ring at one point or another. Plus 50 points (off the top of my head) to your poise which in combination with your armor will let you keep striking without combos getting interrupted, increasing damage output in a roundabout way. But which one is objectively better? Let's look at this from a pvp standpoint because in pve I'm changing my equipment constantly to spank certain bosses/enemies. My take: havels ring is better. The way I see it, I can throw on the shadow set to get my fast roll on and then add the wolf's ring so I dont get staggered. 50 poise and a quick roll with like 60 defence. Big whoop. "Omg poison and bleed resistance" yeah spare me that useless info. Pressure for noobs. OR I can put 3 more points in endurance and throw on havels. Then I can equip the giant armor and giant gauntlets. Now I've got 56 poise. I also have 176 armor and can still quick roll. My conclusion is that the fake poise of the wolf ring hails in comparison to investing levels properly and getting the poise from your armor, using the havel ring to maintain mobility. I know that the armor in dark souls really isnt the most effective thing in the game. That's not what I'm saying. What I'm saying is that if you can have TRIPLE the defence and the same mobility then what's the issue? I got gud. Then I got backstabbed. Then I got better. Then I got even. So dont @ me. Let's keep the debate civilized. Or dont. Who cares? [link] [comments] |
Can you get banned because a stranger gives you stuff? (dark souls remastered) Posted: 31 Mar 2020 11:09 PM PDT So im pretty new to the game and yesterday i trying out a mage and well i got invaded i undead burg and the invader gave me a bunch of stuff like humanitys, bombs and armor. But the thing that was weird is he gave me 80 souls of six which baffled since from what i know you would have to go trough the game at least 80 times to get that many and now im afraid i will get banned for having that many. So can you or am i just paranoid for nothing. Also if you read thisthank you [link] [comments] |

Some rambling from someone doing a caestus-only run Posted: 31 Mar 2020 10:53 AM PDT Now that I have a lot of time on my hands due to current events, I wanted to finally beat the entire game with nothing but my trusty fists and some leather, and holy hell these things are fun when you lean into them! They're no Black Knight Halberd, but I think this weapon is severely underrated for several reasons: 1: having them in both hands (while expensive for reinforcement) gives you a super versatile moveset: L1 is a lightning fast jab that ensures you'll always land the first hit, and for enemies that it staggers it's your combo opener (it also makes for a quick finisher against low health enemies: having a divine caestus in my left hand made the catacombs far more palatable). R1 is your DPS spam, and you can chain it with deadly speed at very low stamina cost. But both these moves are very short range: luckily the R2 is a thrusting punch that covers more distance (and the follow-up is a badass uppercut), while the jumping attack works wonders for closing gaps. Not to mention you get a sick, super fast parry: this is the run that finally got me to learn how to parry and it's ridiculously satisfying. 2: while the damage seems pretty lackluster at first (and it is), if you go ham on END/STR/DEX you end up being able to deal insane amounts of damage before your stamina has to recharge, and the speed of all your attacks is exhilarating if you're accustomed to swinging giant weapons around. I personally killed Ingward early so I could get the very large ember (I'm sorry buddy) and I've been steamrolling the Lords and DLC: the damage these things can do really sneaks up on you! 3: since each caestus only weighs 0.5, you can afford to equip much heavier armor than on most builds, giving you some badass poise and absorption (which you'll need, since you have to fight every enemy and boss right in their face!) 4: the R1 is unstoppable. Literally. It can't bounce off of walls, it never bounces off of shields, it doesn't even bounce off of the armored pigs in Undead Parish or Duke's Archives. Against shieldbearers, I've developed a habit of whacking their shield several times and then immediately following up with a kick: it's so fast that all they can do is hold up their shield in fear and then watch it get swatted away like a chump while you R2 or jump attack them. 5: since you have to constantly fight enemies in very close proximity, the backstab potential is through the roof. I used to think enemies such as the Darkwraiths or Silver Knights weren't worth trying to backstab with their aggressive moveset, but this run has taught me near foolproof strategies for fisting their backsides. The satisfaction is indescribable. 6: the pace of the game completely changes (well, depending on your usual playstyle). You have to be patient, because most enemies outrange you by a lot, but you also have to be aggressive, since the only way to deal damage is to be right next to them. It really becomes a cat and mouse game of waiting for your opening and then combo-ing the living shit out of them (but against tougher enemies, you need to land a lot of hits before you can effectively stagger them: e.g., I was never able to stagger Ornstein before Smough caught up with us, and to my dismay last night I discovered that I had no way of staggering Artorias out of his buff fast enough, which made for a pretty high-stakes fight!) All this being said, your pitiful range does make certain encounters a much bigger challenge, such as Four Kings (trying to R1 spam their wonky hitboxes, to my dismay, did not work at all...Power Within and Gold Pine Resin were lifesavers here). I'm looking forward to finally fighting Gwyn with parries, but first I'll have to down Manus and Kalameet, which I'm sure will be a shitshow :D Just wanted to share my experience, this run has breathed new life into a game I already adore and I highly recommend it for anyone who wants a change of pace! How is someone supposed to find the DLC by themselves? Posted: 31 Mar 2020 02:11 PM PDT The way to access the DLC is so convoluted that there's no way someone would do those exact things in that sequence. -> Beat the hydra and the orange crystal golem. -> Then go to duke's archives and beat the blue crystal golem. Maybe if they were both the same color and only two unique throughout the entire game it would connect better. -> Go all the way back to where you beat the hydra and wade through the water again to the very end of the cave to interact with cloud. Like I know the sequence and in NG+ I totally forgot you can only kill the blue one after the orange one or it won't work. So, did any of you find it yourself? Or what is the intuitive way to find it? Same with Painted world of Aramis TBH [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Mar 2020 05:20 PM PDT Ok, I played and finished DS2 and DS3 when they came out. Last week I installed the free DS1 download that came with DS3. I have to say, DS1 has all around been a far more nightmarish experience than the other two games. Over the years I always heard about how exquisite the level design of DS1 is. And I have to agree it's very good in that the game provides shortcuts so that if you make progress and die, you can use the shortcut to save some misery. And when leaving the firelink shrine, in general, you either go up or down. The music and sound design are great. I'm currently using chain mail and the clink of armor as you walk and the ambient sounds of the environment all add to the atmosphere. Going into this I thought being a DS veteran (having finished 2 and 3) I could breeze through DS1. Nope.
I'm currently in the Catacombs getting destroyed by those bone wheels. All in all, DS1 feels more gritty and unforgiving. While it gives the player more freedom to choose their progress route, there's still a bit of a suffocating feeling and the constant feeling that I'm not going the right way. I guess DS2 and DS3 are more linear, which is what I'm used to. I should note I have never used a co-op or summon to beat a boss in any of the souls games. Maybe that would make it easier but I make it a point to beat every boss myself so I can git gud. Anyways that's where I'm at. [link] [comments] |
