Anyone else remember when Dark Souls was first unveiled at TGS 2010 under the code name “Project Dark?”

    Posted: 15 Apr 2020 10:00 PM PDT

It was presented as, "For those who enjoyed Demon's Souls." The only trailer online is recorded off screen, and it was very strange to me that there was no other way to view it. The game didn't induce as much excitement as you'd think, in spite of Demon's Souls relative success (Brief history: Sony wouldn't publish Demon's Souls in the West because they thought it would fail, but Atlus took a chance on it and sold 4x as many copies as projected).

    Here's the trailer: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=H2sdzFxMFxE

I actually dug up a TGS 2010 article to illustrate that the game was low priority: "Today on preGame we'll screen previews of The Last Guardian, DMC, Wrath of Asura, and Shadows of the Damned. But first, we'll hop right into a brand new gameplay video of BioShock Infinite!"

    Source: https://www.cnet.com/news/pregame-28-tgs-2010-wrap-up/

Of course by the time Dark Souls II came along, the series was well established and an announcement of a sequel to it would have been the primary news of any gaming event.

Crazy to think it would go on to basically create a sub-genre. I do recall The Witcher 2 being inspired by Demon's Souls combat system before Dark Souls was out, but it was Dark Souls that inspired many, many more.

Anyway, I was just reminiscing. It is just fun to look back at it as an underdog that blew every other game away. It's interesting to think that while The Last Guardian, DMC, Wrath of Asura, Shadows of the Damned, and BioShock Infinite generated more excitement from this event, it was the underdog "Project Dark" that is best remembered of all those games.

I just beat Dark Souls for the first time...

    Posted: 15 Apr 2020 11:55 AM PDT

Holy shit. I just beat my first Souls game in the series. Dark Souls 1. Fuck. Where do I begin to say how this game affected me. This game... changed me. And that's... kind of awesome. I am talking about a deeply profound change, not just of my gaming experience... but of just about how I think about life in general and just my own capacity for change. Holy shit. I am still in awe, not only of this fucking gorgeous game... but of my own capacity to appreciate it on this level. I will never look the same way again on gaming... or my life for this matter. FromSoftware.... Thank you. From the bottom of my heart, thank you. Does any body here have a similar experience that they can remember? Dark Souls is more than a game. It's more than just an experience. Dark Souls is change of my soul. I can not fucking remember a time when I game left me in literal tears on multiple occasions, but this game pulled it off.

    I. Am. Changed.

    Holy shit.

Does someone want to talk about this little fuck? He is just so annoying. And the only reward for killing him is a key to the worst two areas in Dark Souls.

I appreciate the Dark Souls community

    Posted: 15 Apr 2020 04:38 AM PDT

I recently went back to play through Dark Souls 1 again. It had been 5 years since I played the game and I decided I didn't want to buy the Remastered edition and that I'd just tough it out on Prepare to Die.

Despite the fact that this edition of the game is no longer for sale on the store and the only people playing it are people who've owned the game for years now, every zone was still full of orange signs calling out all the classic ambushes, hidden rooms, safe spots, ect

I only summoned another player once for help with O&S but it was really encouraging that people still took the time to leave those signs on the off-chance that someone might still find them helpful.

Dark Souls gives me a satisfaction that no other game can bring.

    Posted: 16 Apr 2020 03:05 AM PDT

I currently have 267 hours in Dark Souls Remastered. I've tried DS2 and DS3 but neither of them play as well as DS1. There is just something about the game that continues to bring me back: the game play, the simplicity, the challenge runs, the world design.... There is such a charm that DS1 brings. It's like your favorite dish at a restaurant; you might try other meals from that place, but the certain taste of DS1 is always unmatched, always pulls out on top.

With the extra time this quarantine has given me I have finally decided to attempt a no hit run. As of about an hour ago I got a new PB of 3 hits! Hopefully with another week I can finally finish this month long journey I have set myself on and, in my eyes, officially conquer the beast that is Dark Souls Remastered.

    Just beat Taurus Demon

    Posted: 15 Apr 2020 09:23 PM PDT

Just beat my first boss and wanted to tell someone cause I was really happy. hooooolllly crap was that a doozy. Took a lot of practice and learning to be patient and just poking damage then backing off till I get another opening. Took me somewhere around 10 tries till I finally got it but damn was it satisfying. Still not used to the skill curve definitely but I'm learning.

    Posted: 16 Apr 2020 12:45 AM PDT

Have you ever think about it? At some point in the game my boy Andre told you "I'll be seeing you then." for the last time. Because you never returned and never opened the game again. F.

    Overpowered at mid game

    Posted: 16 Apr 2020 01:46 AM PDT

Recently got back to Dark Souls: Prepare to Die. I had played it before, and then played half-way through DS2, but it was a while ago so I decided to play both again.

After ringing the second bell, I decide to go to Sen's Fortress and after that straight for Anor Londo. It was tough but I pulled it off, killing Ornstein and Smough at around 55 SL. Since I had skipped both Darkroot Garden/Basin, Valley of Drakes and the Catacombs, I proceeded to steam roll these zones, with a Dex/Pyro build, Quelaag's Furysword +4 and Pyromancy Flame +13.

Yesterday I defeated Pinwheel, it literally took 4 hits to down him, the whole fight lasted for 20 seconds. I guess I'm kinda disappointed that at least for these areas, it was really easy, when I distinctly remember being absolutely punishing on my first playthrough.

But I'm hoping going after the lord souls now: Tomb of Giants, The Abyss, Lost Izalith and Crystal Cave will make the game more challenging.

Lore question: What differentiates the race of the Gods from just really powerful Undead?

    Posted: 16 Apr 2020 12:01 AM PDT

So, what first got me about this was the Gwyn fight, how he's so obviously Hollowed, and nowhere near as big as his own daughter or elite forces. Then I paid more attention to the opening cutscene and made note of the fact that they weren't powerful at all until they harnessed the power of the First Flame and the Lord Souls.

What really gets me is that you can generally tell the power level of a humanoid enemy by its size. Gwyndolin is a pretty small dude, but still significantly taller than the player. Lord's Blade Ciaran has next to no physical strength, just has the skill to make up for it. Artorias though, when he hits you you go flying. I mean, if Gwyndolin was named differently from Gwyn and Gwynevere and wasn't in Anor Londo, I wouldn't have ever guessed he was the same race as them. And Gwyn is a whole bunch smaller after splitting his Lord Soul and giving most or all of it away, too.

So, we know the Gods can go Hollow, and we know their size is determined by how much power they have - if you kill Smough first in that fight, Ornstein grows from about twice your height to about seven or eight times, by absorbing the power of the hyper-strong Smough. So it stands to reason that a God who's as strong as the Chosen Undead would be about the same size as them, right?

The only thing that gets me, though, is that the Chosen Undead never changes size, despite [edited] absorbing huge amounts of power that we actively see causing changes in stature among other characters. But I do have a theory about that - I think maybe there's a certain limit to how much "power" an Undead can hold before their body is forced to grow in size to accommodate; souls have physical mass that turns into metaphysical mass, so I think that the capacity of Undead works on both a physical and metaphysical level. It could very well just be that the Chosen Undead has a higher metaphysical capacity for power than Gwyn or Ornstein or any of those others.

Edit: another thing is that it makes sense from a scientific standpoint. A giant swinging its fist, even at the same speed as a human, is going to pack a much bigger punch than the human simply because of its greater mass. It would also be tougher just because its body has to have the innate resilience to withstand its own weight - elephants don't run vey fast not because their muscles can't move that way but because the gravity of its own weight would crush its legs with the opposing force of propelling itself forward at any speed faster than a relative trot. Conversely, we see enormous creatures with the ability to move at some pretty immense speeds, which means they must be almost incomprehensibly resilient, which in turns tells us that they can use a lot more strength than it seems at first glance; humans have the strength to lift cars all the time, we just don't do it because we subconsciously know that the strain of it would damage us a lot.

    Your thoughts?

I've beaten Nito on SL1 without divine weapon, shield, armor or rings - Dragon Torso punch only

    Posted: 15 Apr 2020 08:24 AM PDT

Last 30 seconds of the fight. I play on Switch and used its capture feature. I have no way of recording the whole fight, sorry for that...

I did some pretty rough challenges before, but this was by far THE BIGGEST difficulty jump of a boss due to challenge rules and most close to impossible fight I've experienced. Took literally dozens upon dozens of tries. Scream sword spamming. Stunlocks. Toxic. Bleed. OHKO counterhits... If somebody else, for whatever reason, wants to subject themselves to this atrocity, here are few tips:

    • It's probably impossible without Elizabeth's Mushroom. Considering I used three in this fight (and this fight went really well) two may not be enough unless everything goes perfect. So you need to kill Manus first, as only two are obtainable prior to his death (unless you're in NG+ or someone drops you one).

    • Don't use Elizabeth's Mushroom until Nito gets close to you. Until then, just keep re-killing skellies in landing area

    • Let initial fall stagger you and heal instantly. If you'll hear screaming while chugging, start spamming roll button. This way, you'll always perfectly dodge first "scream sword" attack if Nito does it right at the beginning.

    • Be wary of bleed build up!

    • Do not necessarily run away from his AoE, but make sure you're at full health. In the clip, I wasn't attempting to hide from it, but running away from skellies, so I wouldn't get hit few frames before explosion. If situation allows it, it's actually beneficial to stand close to him, as you'll be able to smack him instantly as you stand up

And now the main reason I'm writing all of this:

By this post, I swear on my own life, that I'll never ever EVER fight Nito without divine weapon again...

    Edit: Here are some "bloopers"! #1 - #2 - #3 - #4 - #5

    The Dark Soul

    Posted: 16 Apr 2020 02:34 AM PDT

What a journey, to platinum this game takes you through an emotional rollercoster. The first run is the grind, you get the bulk of the work done.

The second, you come out swinging like the champ, collect the bits you missed and parry gywn like a boss because you are the dark lord and he is just in the way.

The third run is where you think your going to get to the anor londo blacksmith, with sif's soul in approximately 20 minutes. The harder you push the circle button the faster you run. You feel like you're about to set a new world record and then some lowly hollow beats the big head you got back down to size. You finally make the dreaded run past the archers, the tump of his hammer echoing up the staircase...... and realise you forgot the moonlight greatsword.

Unfortunately i can't post images but it lead to a great screenshot of the sword drop and the platinum trophy. I suppose thats the end of my time in DS1R, on to Drangleic

What was your dumbest mistake you made (or keep making) in Dark Souls?

    Posted: 15 Apr 2020 07:41 AM PDT

The question occured to me after my brother messaged me about involuntary NG+ in Dark Souls 3. He left the window for the credits. Clicked back in, which swung his sword and killed the Fire Keeper.

Mine is a bit more mundane.

I spin 180 degrees each time I enter the Undead Parish elevator because my brain thinks the exit will be the same as the entrance. It never is. It never can be.

I still do this in spite of multiple play throughs and being only 2 achievements shy of 100% completion.

    What is your dumb mistake?

    More feeling in the 360-version

    Posted: 16 Apr 2020 01:58 AM PDT

So i have played all of the dark souls games, and platted them, i love them. And Bloodborne. Recently i lent out my PS4 to a friend and was left with my old 360. I was bored and was very curious about how the game played on 360, so i bought it.

After now doing one runthrough i have to say i think its so much cooler on 360. The impact of sounds are thicker, the contrast in the graphics makes it so much more fantasy. I also discovered i think the 30 FPS makes it more heavy to play, in a good way. The graphics gets much more impact that way.

Aside from the frame drops and the minor annoyance with not being able to consume more items than one at a time, id say the old version is the far superior one.

Have you tried going back to the old one to compare?

Does anyone else get stuck because they have no idea where to go next?

    Posted: 16 Apr 2020 01:25 AM PDT

I can't tell if I'm just stupid or what. I'm on the last leg of the game where I need to get all the Lord Souls, but no NPC seems to help point me in the right direction. I beat Bed of Chaos, Four Kings, and Seath the Scaleless. I always feel guilty asking for help here, but I'm honestly on the brink of giving up out of pure boredom. I can only wander around aimlessly looking for a boss for so long.

    Question about the Depths

    Posted: 16 Apr 2020 12:47 AM PDT

You get to the depths and its obviously some sewer type area. My question is, why does the undead burg need a sewer? Who built this irrigation system? Why are there no toilets in the burg? Who maintains this sewer system? Who's idea was it to build a massive irrigation system in lordran? Where do the undead make thier bowel movements? Why is there a chandler hangin out with a bunch of rats in the sewer?
