Has anyone played through and beat the game with the pirate hook arm? I officially enter that as a challenge to anyone that wants something new and probably difficult.

TIL that if you kill the Pursuer early in Forest of Fallen Giants, you skip his boss fight past the Soldier’s Key Door.

My Dark Souls II DLC follow-up post

    Posted: 17 Mar 2020 11:06 AM PDT

    Hallo again, everybody.

In my last post I told you about my experience in DS2s first DLC-Crown of the Sunken King, with 2 bosses I loved in Elana and Sinh and the amazing experience of beating Sinh without getting hit once. So now I came back to report about the other 2 DLCs. Prepare for disagreeing though, as I have a completely different opinion about one of them compared to the other.

Let's start with Crown of the Old Iron King. I absolutely loved that one. I started playing and instantly liked the looks of the areas. I played for a few hours and eventually got to the fog door which I thought would probably lead me to the final boss but as I was not done exploring I left and went the other ways until I went everywhere I could and had a nice meeting with the blue Smelter Demon who kicked my ass with ease (just like the normal one did until I got lucky). After a few tries I needed a rest and stopped playing to do something else. I didn't get the chance to play until a day later where I ignored Smelterboy and got curious about the other fog door. Yep. There he was, Mr. Fume Knight, the dude I heard so much about. I tried and I tried hard until after some tries I figured out his attacks. At some point, maybe my 25th try or something like that, I killed him in an amazingly cool 8 minute duel. One of the coolest bosses I've seen and he really taught me patience and rolling which I wasn't too good at. After that I went on to kill Sir Alonne who, after being drilled by Fume Knight, was pretty easy to me and I managed to kill him in my second attempt after being surprised by his stab/grab attack in the first. Last but not least I finished off Smelter Demon after a few tries because now he was incredibly easy to dodge after the Fume Knight experience and I was done.

Summary for Crown of the Old Iron King: Great area, three incredible bosses and I got waaaay better. Probably 10/10 DLC for me. Loved it.

Nooow we're moving on to Crown of the Ivory King which, spoiler, I don't like as much.

In my (personal) opinion the area is boring and the snow really annoyed me after a couple of minutes. Luckily I went right and gathered the anti-invisibility item before going the left path. When I went the left path, however, it still pissed me off because I just didn't like the Aava fight at all. He broke my Bone Scythe before I could even get him down to 50% of his health and I had to change afterwards to use my +10 halberd I luckily kept. With this, I "only" had to use three repair powders to finish him off (while also wearing a ring decreasing the speed of weapon breaking). Dodging him was easy (still I think it made no sense) when I found out I had to basically roll inside of him. Killed him, disliked it (greatly).

You think that was the part I hated? Wrong. Burnt Ivory King. I got the four ice dudes. I hate them.

I go through the fog door and all these enemies step out. My excitement rises because it's about to go down. Then, these dudes do absolutely nothing. They gang up one one enemy while I get bashed by the others who don't seem to care about my knight-friends throughout the whole fight. When I look over to my "helpers" they have done as much damage to the enemy-knight as I would have in one strike. I was really pissed, especially at those freaking fire throwing assholes. After some minutes I managed to take everybody out while three knights have shut the doors and the fourth one of course was slaughtered. I fought the Burnt Ivory king and died. I tried again and again but the fight before the Burnt Ivory King was an absolute mess at least 20 times and then, finally I got lucky and the knights actually decently helped me, finishing the fight without too much frustration. But what happens next? Two knights remain and chill with me until the Ivory King arrives but none of them bothers to ice the remaining door so of course the fight starts and pyro-throwing assholes come out leaving me no chance at all. I would have loved to fight the Burnt Ivory king as the few attempts I had to take on him were great fun and I almost beat him once, but the pre-boss fight pisses me off so hard that I just can't find the motivation to do that anymore. (At least in my attemps) I literally have to get lucky to get decent support by the knights and I'm not down to that because relying on an AI to have a chance is one of the few things I hate so I have decided to, for now, not complete this and move on with Dark Souls 3 in the coming days.

Maybe after I finished all the From Software games I have left I will come back to finish this but at the moment I don't feel like it's worth my time.

Not hating or ranting but I personally really dislike the last DLC.

All in all I still loved DS2, especially the first two DLCs and I'm looking forward to playing it again one day and I'll also keep checking this sub. I will now go on to start DS3 and maybe post my experiences on the DS3 subreddit. If any of you are active there, I'll see you there. Thanks for reading this far, I hope you have a great day :)

Is there a way to make a good malformed claws build?

    Posted: 17 Mar 2020 10:06 AM PDT

I like how each of the four Great Ones, or whatever they're called, each have an additional soul on Ng+.

    Posted: 17 Mar 2020 01:15 PM PDT

And each of these new souls, as far as I can tell, are the souls of the four main bosses in Ds1.

    Xbox Servers Answer

    Posted: 17 Mar 2020 03:18 PM PDT

I've been seeing a ton of people having issues signing in on Xbox. If any mods see this , perhaps you can even make a post yourself and pin it to the top or something so people visiting this sub can see it. It would probably help with a lot of clutter!

The servers are not actually down, however they are finicky and don't work proper. all you have to do is quit out to dashboard and then reload up. Sometimes it may take 5/6 tries, and anytime it doesn't work I just take a 2/3 minute break and that it has always worked. using this method, I have never had to play offline in more than 80 hours now after learning of this.

I hope that it helps somebody!

I’m really confused about the beginning of dark souls 2

    Posted: 17 Mar 2020 02:42 PM PDT

The hero of the game fell into a portal which got him from the normal human world to the world of dark souls 2 or what?

    Smelter Demon: Boss Design Analysis

    Posted: 17 Mar 2020 01:36 PM PDT

Did they change things in this game?

    Posted: 17 Mar 2020 01:28 PM PDT

I just started playing this game again after several, several years. It was the first souls game I ever played, and after playing Ds1 and 3 for a long time now, I decided to get it for the Ps4 and get back into it.

However, I noticed a few things seemed... different. Namely, the Heide Knight that has the spear is no longer sitting in front of the tree in the early area of the game. In addition, there is now an extra ogre in the small creek just before this area that I don't remember being there.

    What happened?

    Offline Player and Covenants

    Posted: 17 Mar 2020 01:15 PM PDT

I'm playing SotFS offline (because PSN costs are bullshit) and almost every guide I find mentions different covenants. I've taken a brief look and they all seem to revolve around online play.

Is there any point to me joining a covenant? Like, is there potential in-game bonuses I'm not aware of?

Wondering if the only build I ever play is legit

    Posted: 17 Mar 2020 12:55 PM PDT

So from my very first souls game I played only one way -- minimum equip load for fast rolls, some long ass weapon, typically a halberd or a scythe, to hit enemies before they hit you, two handed and never use shields unless for passive buffs. I don't see the point of other builds... Change my mind

Alright guys, pre-game consultation I need build advice

    Posted: 17 Mar 2020 10:35 AM PDT

So I'm wrapping up a NG+ run in ds1, and after I parry Gwyn to death with a bandits knife like the total badass that I am, I plan on starting a new ds2 playthrough. My work is closed for the next 2 weeks at least due to coronavirus, so it's time to sell some weed and play some dark souls y'all! Hopefully we don't all die! I'm not worried about dying though honestly, this game has given me plenty of practice.

So, I very much want to try a dex build in this game. Last time I did str/faith, but I was playing unpatched, and this time I will be playing a patched game. Also my current ds1 run is a faith build and I'm getting tired of hurling lightning bolts everywhere (although they sure as shit help in the shrine of amana). So i am thinking of supplementing dex with int, as I have never ever done sorcery in this game except for hexes, which I am also trying to avoid this time around. One of my biggest reasons for wanting to go the dex route...TWINBLADES. Never used them and always been intrigued!

So what advice can you guys give me for a dex/twinblade/sorcery run? What should my priorities be in terms of gear? What is the best twinblade? What kinds of enchantments/infusions should I be looking at if any? What staff should I go after first? What spells are good? What rings? Never done this before so all the info will be appreciated!! I think I'll go for a rapier in early game. Gotta figure out power stancing, never done that before either. I'm excited.

I have officially surpassed 2014 me, and I am disappointed.

    Posted: 16 Mar 2020 05:48 PM PDT

Back in 2014 I played Dark Souls 2, my very first souls game, on my roomie's xbox 360. Offline lol cuz what college student has money amirite?

I couldn't beat the giant on my first playthrough (deprived because lol why not I had no idea what I was getting into), but I beat the pursuer on the first try waaay back when. Baby's first souls boss defeated.

I must have taken out the gargoyles solo because I had lit the torches to the sinner (all vanilla DS2), but I don't remember it. I remember an NPC invader in the gutter dying because they fell off a cliff, and I remember the royal rat vanguard being annoying but doable.

But the Rotten... I could not kill the damn thing. Between not being able to dodge poison and the fire in it's lair, I could not beat it. I beat the scorpion lady, the pursuer, the sinner, and some other bosses I can't remember (I have the memory of a hollow lol), but The Rotten. It got to the point where I stopped playing and was still stuck on the Rotten. Either I rage quit for the long haul or I moved out. I don't know what happened first. Probably the rage quit.

Well as of a few hours ago, I beat it. It was a push over. I feel like I just... walked past the statues and they missed me. I summoned Lucatiel to play bait, and then I whacked it till it died, and it died fairly quickly. I am stunned and disappointed. 2014 me struggled so hard with that ugly bastard, and yet it just keeled over and died. I thought this son of a bitch was Quelagg level of irritation, but no. I was just really really INCREDIBLY terrible at dark souls.

I looked up guides for this son of a skeleton. I swapped from my sword and board to stripping down and poking it with a rapier to I don't even know. I would love to know what level and memory I had back then. It must have been ridiculous lol

But out of all the bosses to die miserably on and stop playing over... The Rotten... Discount Nito.

Oh 2014 me... you got gud. Or at least beat the Rotten.
