The story of getting every armour, weapon and ring I could in offline before NG+

    Posted: 26 Mar 2020 01:51 PM PDT

This is a continuation of my restriction run that you can read about here.

    Introduction

It wasn't something that I planned from the start to do.

I used the Symbol of Avarice, the Prisoner's Tatters, the Tseldora Manchettes, the Tseldora Trousers, the Watchdragon Parma and the Covetous Gold Serpent Ring +1 for farming.

    The Pickaxe

    • First try
    • It was an easy, fun little side-quest.

    The Engraved Gauntlets

    • I killed Creighton the Wanderer.
    • I will kill Pate the second time I complete this in NG+.

    The Alonne Captain's Set

    • 10-12 hours
    • I was farming this while pertaining to the Covenant of Champions, and while trying to clear the whole furnace area in the Iron Keep.

The Dragon Acolyte Set and Weapons

    • 1-2 hours
    • The weapons were much more common than the armour pieces.
      • I got 3 Aldia Hammers and 2 Bone Shields before getting the full set.

    The Dragon Sage Hood

    • Second try
    • I wasn't trying to farm for it. I was trying to get the Basilisk to come down the stairs and destroy the closed carriages that were there.

    The Fume Sorcerer Set

    • 2-3 hours
    • I only needed the boots.

    The Grave Warden Set

    • 30 minutes - 1 hour
    • I already had the mask and the cuffs.

    The Gyrm Set

    • 30 minutes - 1 hour
    • I already had the helm.

    The Gyrm Warrior Set

    • 30 minutes - 1 hour
    • I already had the gloves and boots.

    The Gyrm Warrior Greathelm

    • After I finished farming the Peasant set, I back-stabbed the Gyrm Warrior near the Royal Army Campsite bonfire and got this helm first-try.

    The Heide Knight Set

    • 4-5 hours
    • I had no piece of this set
    • I already had a Heide Knight Sword and a Heide Spear and an additional 2 swords and spear dropped.

    The Hollow Infantry Set

    • <30 minutes
    • I only needed the armour.

    The Imperious Set

    • 2-3 hours
    • I already had the armour and the boots.

    The Ironclad Set

    • 30 minutes - 1 hour
    • I only needed the helm.

The Leydia White Set and Shield

    • 1-2 hours
    • I only needed the robe.

    The Lion Warrior Set

    • 3-4 hours
    • I only needed the cape, but I thought that the Helm drops too from the regular Lion Warriors, so I continued to kill them, even though I already had what I needed. Probably could have ended way sooner.

The Mad Warrior Set and the Berserker Blade

    • 7-8 hours
    • I already had the mask from killing a Prowler, but it didn't matter.
    • I joined the Bell Keepers Covenant, despawned all the Bell Keepers and used the Delicate String to increase the chances of being invaded.
    • The Mad Warrior did not drop anything until the 50th time I went up the ladder, at which point it dropped its armour. This was about the 13th encounter out of 50 climbs. After this drop, I started keeping track of how many times I went up and of how many times it spawned. At the 52nd attempt, it dropped its sword. At the 64th attempt, it dropped its Mask. At the 71st attempt, it dropped its gloves and at the 210th attempt it dropped its leggings.
    • Here are all the attempts where it did spawn, starting with the fiftieth one.
      • 50 52 57 61 64 71 76 77 79 80 84 85 91 95 97 98 105 108 119
      • 136 137 144 159 171 179 180 181 182 185 191 194 197 208 210
    • Out of about 210 attempts, only about 47 were actual encounters.

    The Mastodon Set and Weapons

    • 1-2 hours
    • I already had the leggings.

    The Old Ironclad Set

    • 30 minutes - 1 hour
    • I already had the gloves and boots.

    The Old Knight Set

    • 30 minutes - 1 hour
    • I already had the gloves.
    • I was farming the Heide Knight Set and while doing so, I also farmed this set .

    The Peasant Set

    • 30 minutes - 1 hour

The Rampart Golem Set and Weapons

    • 4-5 hours
    • The weapons were much more common than the armour pieces.
      • I got 4 Rampart Golem Lances and 3 Rampart Golem Shields before getting the full set.
      • I got 4 Rampart Golem Gauntlets before getting the armour.

    The Rogue Set

    • 1-2 hours
    • I already had the armour.
    • I got 11 gauntlets, 4 armours and 3 leggings before getting the cowl.

    The Ruin Set

    • 2-3 hours
    • I already had the helm.

    The Rusted Mastodon Set

    • 30 minutes - 1 hour
    • I already had the leggings.

    The Sanctum Knight Set

    • 2-3 hours
    • I already had the helm.
    • I got 4 Sanctum Crossbows before getting the armour.

    The Shadow Set and Weapons

    • 4-5 hours
    • It was very time consuming because the place where I could farm this set was far from a bonfire and the drop rate low.
    • I got the Malformed Claws and the Shadow Dagger twice before getting the top.

    Syan's Set

    • 30 minutes - 1 hour
    • I already had 3 gauntlets and leggings.

    The Varangian Set

    • 30 minutes - 1 hour
    • I only needed the helm

    The Retainer Robe

    • 30 minutes - 1 hour

    The Minotaur Helm

    • 1-2 hours

    The Sanctum Priestess Tiara

    • I got it while I was farming for the Sanctum Knight Set.

    The Sea Bow

    • 30 minutes - 1 hour

    The Manikin Claws

    • 2-3 hours
    • They can be farmed from any Manikin that uses claws, not from just 2 specific ones as specified on the wiki.

    The Retainer's Short Sword

    • 30 minutes - 1 hour

The Drakekeeper's Great Hammer, The Drakekeeper's Warpick and The Greatshield of Glory

    • 5-6 hours
    • I had to farm these items while pertaining to the Covenant of Champions, as I had despawned the Drakekeepers while trying to obtain their Armour Set.

    The Old Knight Greatsword

    • 30 minutes - 1 hour
    • I thought I already had it for most of the playthrough.

    The Old Knight Ultra Greatsword

    • 2-3 hours

    The Full Moon Sickle

    • 1-2 hours
    • I wanted to have 2 of them and immediately after getting the first one, I got the second one.

    The Silverblack Sickle

    • 2-3 hours

    The Great Machete

    • 30 minutes - 1 hour

    The Bloodied Whip

    • 1-2 hours

    The Stone Twinblade

    • 1-2 hours

The Black Dragon Sword, The Black Dragon Greataxe, The Black Dragon Warpick and The Black Dragon Shield

    • 10-12 hours
    • All of the Dragon Knights in the Dragon Shrine were despawned before I could get their loot. I got 6 Black Dragon Greataxes and 6 Black Dragon Shields before I got even one Sword or Warpick.

    The Covenants

    The Bell Keepers

    • 8-9 hours
    • After farming the Mad Warrior Set and encountering it for about 47 times, I had to do that once more. Also, I had to kill him even more times, because I had died in some of the encounters.
    • In total, I had to go up the ladder another 240 times, 60 of which were actual encounters.
      • 12 16 19 28 29 30 34 44 45 47 51 53 54 56 63 66 72 74 75 86 90 95 97 100 101 104 114 116 120 123 124 125 126 127 128 131 134 135 136 142 144 148 150 165 166 171 172 175 176 178 193 199 200 225 228 230 231 232 238 240

    The Rat King Covenant

    • 5-6 hours
    • The Rat Tails dropped fairly often. I would get one every 10 minutes, on average.

    The Dragon Remnants

    • 12-14 hours
    • As I had already farmed the Dragon Knights' equipment, I had collected 8 Dragon Scales, for a total of 9. As I had already despawned them, I had a tougher job in battling them, as I had to, once again, join the Company of Champions. This posed a greater difficulty, as the Drakekeepers were there too to keep me company in this quest for the eternal ancient dragon.

    The Heirs of the Sun

    • 18-20 hours
    • The drop rate was very low for the Sunlight Medals. I would get, on average, one every 40 minutes, but I would get periods of up to 2 hours where no Sunlight Medal was dropped.

    The Covenant of Champions

    • 4-5 hours
    • Farming for Awestones proved to be a very simple task. All I had to do was go to the Shaded Woods and fight the Roaming Souls from the really foggy part of the forest. They dropped Awestones fairly often, at a rate of about one every 5 minutes. I already had 2. I remember getting one from a Flame Salamander in the Memory of the Old Iron King, while trying to clear the area before battling Sir Alonne, although I wasn't in the Covenant of Champions at the time. The second one I remember getting it from the Old Knight wielding an Ultra Greatsword.
    • While farming for other objects and being in the Covenant of Champions, I started gathering Awestones even though I did no longer need them. Thus, I had collected 15 Awestones from Stone Knights and Grave Wardens and, while pursuing to obtain Dragon Scales, I unintentionally obtained 80 more Awestones. If anyone wishes to rank up both in the Covenant of Champions and in the Dragon Remnants, I wouldn't suggest starting with the former.

    Thoughts on luck/ drop rate

    • From what I can gather, the drop rate is influenced by the number of times the player has died to or has killed that specific enemy. For example, I was farming for the Imperious Set and was only needing the Gloves. The Imperious Knights that I was farming from were not dropping anything anymore and when I remembered there was another one just off a ledge, I instantly got the pair of gloves that I needed. Another example would be the Black Dragon Sword that was dropped by the last remaining Dragon Knight that I had left alive, after annihilating the others, the one accompanying the Warpick and Shield Drakekeeper.
    • There were many instances of not getting a specific item that I needed after a long time of struggling and after finally obtaining it and moving on to another enemy, I would get multiple drops of the same item that I needed beforehand.
    • The drop rate of the items an enemy normally drops and the drop rate of Awestones must be two different variables that do not influence each other. I got both a Dragon Knight item and an Awestone about 4 times, 3 of them happening in a 10 minute interval.
    • The drop rate has periods of being either favorable or unfavorable. You can get about 1-2 hours of no items being dropped, while also getting an hour of absolute loot, with 6-8 coveted items in a row.

    World-building Annoyances

    • They switched up the names and descriptions of the Shield of Glory and of the Tower Shield. Hence, They managed to ruin Sir Syan's story by not presenting the even more tragic side of the tale. Moreover, the Tower Shield was supposed to be a reference to the Tower Knights from Demon's Souls, which the Drakekeepers resemble.
    • Why is Magerold of Lanafir the leader of the Dragon Remnants covenant? It makes no sense. Why would a treasure hunter from far away be the leader of a covenant of dragon worshipers that live in a shrine on an isolated mountain? Why would the leader of the covenant talk about getting to the aforementioned shrine and looting it? Why would you take a Petrified Egg from that shrine and give it to him and become accepted into that covenant? It would have made more sense if the leader of the shrine was the Egg itself. It would have made dozens of times more sense and would have been cooler to have to go to the Dragon Shrine, to the altar of the Egg to make your offerings. It could be an unborn Ancient Dragon which is revered by its followers that awaits its awakening. It could be a dragon that needs scales in order to hatch and guides its worshipers from the future, planning its own birth, ending its own slumber.

Been exploring Eleum Loyce and a beautiful but scary voice told me to turn back and never return. Given the difficulty of the enemies so far, I'm kinda inclined to listen.

    Posted: 25 Mar 2020 08:32 PM PDT

Edit: This place is so much fun. I got two OF the Loyce knights and I'm currently fighting the King, I think I'm gonna leave it at a total of three, taking the King on solo feels damn epic. Also haven't found horsefuck valley, where do I go, I want killing the King to be the last thing I do.

What boss in this game do you love aesthetically or lore-wise, but was lackluster to fight? How would you improve the fight?

    Posted: 26 Mar 2020 08:27 AM PDT

I recently started playing SOTFS again with some friends who have only played DS3 before this. I've been having a blast going over the lore and secrets of each area, and they all seem to be having a good time as well.

This made me think how some bosses in this game don't always feel as epic as their design or lore describes them. Personally, I wished both Velstadt and Nashandra were better fights. Velstadt could have benefited from a bit more aggression and another hex besides the orbs. Nashandra I feel would be a better fight if she had a variety of hexes and was a bit faster, rather than just setting up the curse zone (which can be delt with pretty easily or ignored) and shooting a laser.

Just wanted to see if anyone else shared this sentiment and what kind of cool changes you might have thought of to give cool bosses the fight they deserve.

    Dodge Roll

    Posted: 26 Mar 2020 08:13 PM PDT

What's the deal with this whole "get ADP to the nineties" business? I've almost competed the game. I'm on the third DLC (the ice one). I've seen Vendrick, though haven't killed him cause I only have one Giant's Soul from Black Gultch. My ADP has been 30 or less the whole game and I don't die frequently. I also don't run with heavy armor, just the Black Witch's Dress, Tseldora Gloves and Boots, and the Crown of the Old Iron King. I two hand a Heide Spear most of the time, so I'm not blocking. The I-frames seem fine to me. If I get hit while rolling it's mostly due to me messing it up and rolling early on an enemy that is delaying his attack. Are the frames really that much better on the other two? I've beaten the first one a while back and haven't played the third, so I don't remember the first and can't speak for the last. Just seems like a weird flex to get ADP all the way up that high.

Dark Chasm of Old is a bitch

    Posted: 26 Mar 2020 07:42 PM PDT

Finished all the DLCs and just have Throne of Want and HorseFuck Valley to go, but then I realized I never did the Chasm of Old. Stepped into the one under Dragenlaic and holy shit!...that dual wielding hammer dude just wiped the floor with me and then 3 more came at the same time on my second attempt! I am by now means "gud", but this is quite a challenge that I was not expecting. Fuck these guys. I had a poison Ricard and a Havel shield and got ganked quickly when it became 3 vs 1. Is this area really that hard?

Crown of the Old Iron King is the most difficult section yet

    Posted: 26 Mar 2020 04:00 PM PDT

I haven't even faced a single boss here yet, and I have died probably 100 times already. And with great equipment and stats accrued through the main game! 50INT with Magic Staff of Wisdom +5, Lightning Longsword +10 with 30FTH, Flame Quartz Ring +3, etc.

I just activated Brume Tower and got the Tower Key. Man, I love this series. Dark Souls 2 has the reputation as the black sheep of the series, but it is my favorite so far.

Anyone else love watching other people's playthrough and talking about the lore?

    Posted: 26 Mar 2020 10:52 AM PDT

I have been doing this with every Soulsborne game. It's an amazing experience to watch honestly. I never understood why people care about those reaction videos until I found a reaction to the things I like. How funny is that? Seeing overcome the challenge and their inpretation of the lore is just really cool. Sometimes you learn something new or thought about it which is just nice.

Right now I'm watching this guy called T B Skyen walkthrough. It's especially interesting because he breakdowns every boss he faces. Talks about the lore and what he thinks of it Hes done with DS1 and now hes on DS2. Highly recommend it!

Should I fight Veldstadt with the NPC or not?

    Posted: 26 Mar 2020 08:04 PM PDT

I've never gotten close to beating him with NPC. By myself I got within one more attack of killing him but got greedy earlier and died but then got my ass kicked the next 5 times and did better with NPC.

I'd shit bricks if anyone was a PC in the 2m-2.5m soul range and wanted to help. I've sat by the fog gate for hours w/o seeing a summon sign

I think I've found my weapon.

    Posted: 25 Mar 2020 03:11 PM PDT

Everytime I go through the shrine of amana I get impressed by the archdrake clerics and their aesthetic. So I finally broke down and farmed until I got one of their maces. I love it! I have 55 strength and 20 dex (dont know what the hard cap it for strength) and it's at plus 10. With ring of blades and stone ring, it does around 450 ar and like 90 poise break. I like it because it's not ridiculous damage like the RI winblade, but it's still really good. It has a great halberd moveset with a spin to win, and it does strike damage. Not to mention I buff it with flame weapon as well. It's just all around a great weapon and I honestly don't think I've ever truly experienced finding "your weapon" in a souls game until now. It just feels like it's the best weapon to me, even though I know it isn't. 😂

    Posted: 26 Mar 2020 01:52 PM PDT

I made it a point to get vendrick's blessing as early as possible, so I only have OIK and Rotten's great souls, but I've made it past the crypt and dragon shrine

will aldia appear if I return to their bonfires after lighting the remaining primal bonfires?

    "Gathering of Exiles" Trophy Bug?

    Posted: 26 Mar 2020 07:07 PM PDT

So I have each of the npcs required for the trophy and the trophy hasn't unlocked. I spoke to each of them (exhausted all dialogue), transported in and out of Majula, and even tried reloading and nothing has gotten this trophy to unlock. Any tips or workarounds to fix this?

Edit: Shortly after posting this I used the cracked eye to get revenge (not knowing what it would do) and I killed the miracle lady. I have successfully made matters worse I believe.

Edit 2: Just checked and the trophy did in fact unlock. Strangely it didn't show up when I completed it, but it's solved nonetheless.

Finally played the dlc's after months last night.

    Posted: 26 Mar 2020 10:49 AM PDT

Before last knight I hadn't touched ds2 in months, I just defeated Nashandra and took the throne months ago but every time I tried the dlc they whooped my ass back to Majula. After so much frustration I just abandoned the game, last night I was watching a Joseph Anderson video that inspired my to pick it back and yesternight/morning has been the greatest several hours of this quarantine so far. I don't know but something just "clicked" I took Joseph Anderson's advice of switching to life gems instead of estus and unlocking the camera, this is the way to play ds2, after all this time discovering the main source of my frustration (approaching this game like the other titles) made me feel both validated and kinda stupid for not realizing it during the entire vanilla campaign.

I made it through the Sanctum City ganks that had been buttfucking me a knife through butter. Discovering the Drakeblood Greatsword made it all the better, that sword has carried me all the way to both Alonne and the Ivory King.

Last night alone I slayed, Elena, Sinh, Fume Knight(two tries, my proudest ds2 accomplishment) Aava and the Ancient dragon (first try; if you don't count all my previous attempts). I've had such a blast and now I'm definitely gonna go to ng+ after I'm done.

Gank fights which I used to absolutely hate are now my favourite part of ds2, such a great mix of challenge and fun however they shouldn't be used as often as they are, these gank fights while fun in open areas when you have room to move about are a terrible choice when put in small corridors, seriously Iron Passage can go f*ck itself. Also how long can I stay in Alonne's memory? Running past that gank squad is hell but I'm afraid if I stand and fight I'll just run out of time.

I'd be remiss if I didn't at least talk about the bosses a little.

Sinh was a boss I absolutely hated in my initial run of the Sunken King, I thought his hitboxes were broken, animations were unclear and hitting him felt like slamming your sword against concrete all that chages with an unlocked camera, definitely one of the better fights of the whole series. Cutting off his tail also feels very satisfying. He's also one of the few dragons with a moveset that both good in the air and on the ground.

People complain about the Ancient Dragon so much but he's ridiculously easy, seriously the only attack you need to worry about is the flying flame attack and it only takes just more than half health, there's so much room between his attacks that when I got him to a third of his health I just tanked the flame damage, chugged some estus along with a lifegem then go back to giving him a pedicure. Not the best fight but there's fun to be had and the Drakeblood Greatsword once again shines though.

Aava is one of the better beast bosses, such a cool design and beautiful arena, she feels like a literal gatekeeper guarding the bridge. The statues I thought would be great for blocking her range attack completely crumbled on hit, thankfully it's quite easy to dodge. Her lungeing attack is very easy to bait and exploit and I found that preferable to staying under her since the aoe is difficult to get away from.

Fume Knight in my opinion is the boss that exemplifies "difficulty done right" his chasing stab done whenever you try to heal can be frustrating but is the single best thing about him, he forces you to play with absolutely minimal errors, I took only one hit when fighting him for the last time and the adrenaline rush runs from beginning to end with that fight, not a fucking second to take a breather (please from more no heal bosses in Elden Ring) it's so satisfying going through a boss with almost 0 mistakes, perfectly dodging every strike, staying on your toes prepared for the slightest change and feeling the shaking on my hands as you fight to maintain your composure, this kind of feeling can only be done when you craft an enemy that is difficult because of its mechanics while still being fair with well telegraphed attacks and a clear solution to each problem (something most soulslikes fail to do). The battle against this knight is also a battle to maintain control and not freak out, get greedy, panic dodge or loss focus, every boss in the series has moment where they keep you on the knife's edge between death and survival that small ethereal plan where it feels like you're riding a motorbike down a volcano while playing a banjo with pyroclastic flow hit on your tail, and bosses like Fume Knight make that moment last the entire fight.

So that was last night, ds2 has been quite a journey and one I'm definitely going to take again, I left the best bosses for last, I'll be taking on Alonne and The Ivory King today. Aldia didn't show up after I beat Nashandra, I can't be bothered to do the Iron passage and I haven't found horsefuck valley or cave of the dead so those might be the bosses I miss. All in all, it's been hella fun, and I just had to change my approach. Personally ds3 is my favourite of the franchise (I just prefer fast gameplay). I used to see ds2 as the weakest of the trilogy but now I don't even look at it in terms of which is better because all 3 games provide such a unique experience I'll forever cherish. I'm glad ds2 exists and does things differently it keeps the series from feeling samey and it's a fun approach to combat that mixes things up, it's nice to have such vastly different options whenever I wanna return to Lordran, Drangleic or Lothric.

    Most active SM

With the influx players due to self isolation I think it's fair to ask the age old question of, which soul memories are most active? Personally looking for data on SOTFS, PC, but the more data the better. Where are you finding PvP?
