Fume Knight is the best boss in gaming

    Posted: 01 Feb 2020 01:41 AM PST

Over the past month, I've been replaying all of the dark souls games. I played through dark souls 1 a few times, then i moved onto playing both 2 and 3 at the same time. Tonight, i beat Fume Knight again.

Man, what a fight. I'll start off saying i played through dark souls 2 and all it's dlcs when they came out on ps3, along with SotFS on ps4. When Crown of the Iron King came out, i had already put thousands upon thousands of hours into dks1, about 100 into demon's souls, and about 1000 in dks2. With that in mind, i was so familiar with and accustomed to the souls formula that i managed to get through most new areas and bosses with little trouble, but of course there are exceptions. The beginning of my first dks2 playthrough was a big one as i adjusted to adaptability and not being able to roll through the world at level 1.

Fume Knight, on the other hand put me in my place in a way that only he has done since my first playthrough of dark souls 1, which was my first souls game. I wasn't counting, but he surely took me upwards of 50 attempts before i got my first kill. I can't think of another boss in the series that has taken me more than 15 attempts outside of my first dks1 playthrough. Gael might be close, and I don't remember the dragon's name from the ringed city dlc in 3, but i did that with a friend once and never again, so I didn't get the full difficulty on him.

It's not just the difficulty though. Anybody could make a hard boss. It's the fact that at first, he can seem nearly impossible alone. He truly evokes the feeling of hopelessness and despair, that the series has built itself relying on, in the player. Any mistake is met immediately with an answer.

He baits you, which is something more enemies need to do. A few of his combos end with a hit that comes just after it looks like he was recovering, but that was his plan. You know the ones if you've fought him. Chances are, you've been killed by them a few times or more, because you thought it was an opening for you to heal or attack.

He punishes your rolls perfectly before you learn his attacks. They are expertly crafted in a way that, to me, stands out more than any other boss in the series. Before you learn his attacks, you'll probably spend most of your stamina rolling either at the wrong time or in the wrong direction.

He has a few really cool attacks too. Most notable are the AoE that sends out the orbs, and the very slow swing that goes nearly 360 degrees around him in his second phase.

Once you do learn his attacks well, though, you really start to see how well designed he is. He becomes very easily readable. The second time i killed him, i was able to kill him without taking a single hit. I spent so much time trying to kill him even once, and at some point it just clicked and i had his number. The boss that i once wondered if i would ever kill was now at my mercy.

If he wasn't cool enough already, he is also the only boss in the series, to my knowledge, that changes because of lore reasons. I know of the sif cutscene if you kill Manus before him, but Fume is different. He sees you wearing the Armor of Velstadt, and you can tell he wants to kill you right then and there for it. Without Velstadt's armor, it's almost as if you have to gain his respect for him to show you his full strength.

(Edit; i meant to say this in the initial post, but forgot in my sleep deprived state) Fighting him tonight actually excited me. Almost like Christmas morning either as a kid, or now that I'm able to give back on Christmas. I was laughing, i was smiling fighting him, just because this boss is so dang cool. For what it's worth, I'm very conservative with my emotions and even when i am excited about something, you wouldn't know it unless i say. With Fume though, i feel like it must have been obvious. It was wonderful fighting him again.

Sorry for the formatting. I'm on mobile and sleep deprived, but i just really wanted to talk about this, maybe a few people will read it and agree or enjoy the read for what it is.

All of this is, of course, my opinion, and not stated as absolute fact. Just what I've come to believe in my limited experience. If you don't agree, I'd love to hear what your thoughts are on the best boss is in your opinion. What makes your boss great?

I love the burnt ivory king

    Posted: 01 Feb 2020 08:02 AM PST

I've been stuck on this boss all day now and it's legitimately a very fair challenge and a perfect example of a gank done right. The battle before the king himself is a spectacle as is the drop, and really makes you feel like just another soldier in a battlefield, a feeling I don't get much in these games especially because one of my rules is no summons (purely because I want to feel like I alone overcame the boss without any help). Beside that though, the boss itself is challenging and rewarding, and I love the idea of exploring to find allies to make the fight easier. However, one of my favorite aspects of this boss is that it's one of the only true walls I've faced in a long time. Most of the time in these games ever since O&S when I got the mechanics down, I've had relatively little struggle or "walls" where I get stuck on a boss for a long time, since I wind up beating most within ~5 -10 attempts, but the burnt ivory king is a legitimately fair wall that I've been stuck on for days now (granted I haven't been playing as much as usual, but still). I've lost all my human effigies but I still have so much fun trying to beat him again, and I think that's the beauty of his boss. It's so challenging yet it never gets old to face him again, and I love the rush of facing an opponent far out of my league and overcoming it.

Im playing scholar of the first sin edition...but uts actually the vanilla edition?

    Posted: 01 Feb 2020 09:15 AM PST

Items aren't where they're supposed to be, like the merchant not selling a fragrant branch or the chest in no man's wharf not having a fragrant branch. And enemy placements are the vanilla placement like the three crossbow archers near the tower bonfire. I haven't been able to find people with the same problem, any ideas?

Why do people in PvE gameplays and streams keep rolling *away* from attacks and getting hit, when they should be rolling *towards* the attack to duck below it and be untouched?

    The rapier

    Posted: 31 Jan 2020 04:29 PM PST

A lot of people in the ds2 community seem to hate the rapier, Because you just spam r1. But for any other weapon you will also just use the best attack right? So why do people hate it so much? It can't just be because it does a lot of damage right? Because there are tons of other weapons that deal a lot of damage.

So the Black Gulch was sponsored by a sodium company?

    Posted: 01 Feb 2020 11:52 AM PST

This level was just designed to increase blood pressure.

I have never been so salty going through a level. It's just nonstop trolling you.

Fromsoft has to have a screening room where employees can watch streams of players trying to get through it and laugh.

I spent such a long time taking out all the statues and then got ganked by the third summon and it all reset.

Then if you try to just run through...how can I put this...if you got married and instead of everyone throwing rice at you and your partner it was just first fulls it salt. That's pretty much how I felt last night.

I actually had to stop after that boss and do some meditation/relaxation before bed.

How the fuck do I defeat the ruin sentinels?

    Posted: 01 Feb 2020 01:21 PM PST

Words cannot express how much I fucking hate this game right now.

I have wasted all my fucking effigies, my gold pine resins, fucking everything on this god damn boss. I guess From Software was fucking chewing on crayons when they designed this game didn't they?

I know I'm going to the get the stupid "git gud" message in the comments but how the fuck do I beat this god damn boss?

Edit: I'm trying the skip. Though I want to return once I am stronger and have better stats. Thanks for taking the time to respond with tips friends.

Edit 2: As of right now I am in Sinner's Rest!

Screw you Alessia, Yahim, and Ricce!

Where to go after lighting all primal bonfires?

    Posted: 01 Feb 2020 12:43 PM PST

Question says it all. I lit them all, did it in the order of Sinner, Iron, Rotten then Freja. I talked to Aldia, but I have no clue where to go now. People are saying to go left in the shaded woods forked road but the gate won't open, I need "symbol of the king". Did I miss something??? Do I have to start all over???

So for as long as I’ve played the Souls series I have ALWAYS played a melee build. Zweihander to be exactly for DS1 and DS2. Last night I made a new character to try out sorceries/miracles/hexes. I still find myself wanting to always melee the enemies.

    Posted: 01 Feb 2020 11:02 AM PST

What's some good tips I should follow to keep up the magic build? I just turned the fire longsword into a magic longsword before I got off last night and about to start playing!

Starting to think it's just more of a subconscious thing since ever since I played DS1 the very first time that's all I'm used to.

    Summoning NPCs

    Posted: 01 Feb 2020 07:09 AM PST

Right so.... this has never happened to me before. At this stage in my life I would consider myself a souls veteran but this has me kinda stomped as it has NEVER happened to me before.

Recently decided to play through DS2 again and for some reason I can only summon NPCs AFTER I kill the boss of / clear the area.

Sellsword Luet could only be summoned after killing the last giant. Ruined Alfis could only be summoned after killing armourer Dennis in FotFG. And couldn't summon Tark until after killing the Scorpioness Najka.

Has anyone had this happen before? Whenever I google the problem, solutions about general NPC summoning is all I get

    Thanks in advance
