Why I appreciate the dragon fights in this game

They actually feel how a real dragon would fight. Many people get annoyed cuz they can deal so much damage with their fire and stun lock you to death(especially the ancient dragon) and flying a lot. Like I said, you are fighting a giant animal which has wings that can lift its weight easily and that can breathe fire from its mouth. As you have seen in movies, other games etc, thats how dragons would react, they tend to fly a lot and try to vaporize everything from the skies and everything that is caught in their fire almost always ends in ashes. I never got angry for guardian dragon "spamming" his fly away move, never got mad getting 2shoted by ancient dragons fire and never minded the fact that the Slumbering Dragon in tee 1st dlc has a fireball from above that if you dodge early its blast will still hit you. Just ds2 gives me the feeling that I'm fighting a real dragon. Ds1 did not give me this feeling at all. Sure Kalameet is a big dragon and has everything corresponding to that but he can't fly since ya have to cripple him in order to fight him. Ds3, I have yet to fight Midir and I admit his size(and probably damage) will make me enjoy the fight but from what I've seen he doesn't fly as well

So to sum up, ds2 did a splendid job programming those dragon fights

Dumb post, still worth a shot

    Posted: 01 Jan 2020 04:24 PM PST

Hey there. I've been on r/SummonSign dozens of times, and one thing I've noticed is that almost no one on there has or wants to play ds2. So, I came looking here, for some jolly cooperation! I plan to start a new playthrough with someone

Edit: probably should clarify this, I'm on pc and have Sotfs.

    Best feeling in the world

    Posted: 01 Jan 2020 11:52 PM PST

After around 5 attempts to kill the fume knight using a shield, armor, and a sainters spear, I finally sucked it up and took off all of my gear and two handed an Estoc. Watching my naked man obliterate the knight first try with this setup was beautiful. The true way to fight bosses in this game seems to be this, so much fun, so much adrenaline.

In defense of hollowing draining health

    Posted: 02 Jan 2020 07:51 AM PST

So after years of not touching the series I bought every Dark Souls on steam and got busy gitting gud. I really loved the first game, but curiously I never got invaded or found any summoning signs. I knew the mechanics existed in the game, so I found this to be very curious. What I didn't know, was that you had to have humanity for those mechanics to work. Like many gamers, I am a hoarder. I don't use any consumables unless I absolutely have to, and in the first game I simply did not have to.

Fast forward to DS2, and I'm getting invaded by human and NPC players, as well as sommuning people to help with some of the more difficult bosses. Yes I know some NPC's will invade you regardless of how hollow you are, but a good few were real players, and obviously the summons required me to be human. The fact that I was using an effigy every so often to keep my health up meant that I was getting a fuller experience of the game. Was it annoying? Yes. Are there better ways to encourage players to become human? Maybe. But I can at least see what Fromsoft were going for.

Anyway, I beat the game yesterday and am finishing up the DLC's before moving on to three. GLHF, my fellow hollows.

    Need help with a build

    Posted: 02 Jan 2020 01:50 PM PST

So I was watching a sunlight blades video and I seen a build I would like to replicate but there are no stats for the build anywhere and I was wondering if anyone had any ideas for one, https://youtu.be/HZjMoCvH_5c it's number two in the list, but it is made up of the mad warriors mask, Drake keepers armor, and smelter demons arms and legs with duel malformed claws and a pyromancers flame for fire buff, but I wanted to make it as efficient as possible with a goal of about sl150, any suggestions?

    Multiplayer Co-op

    Posted: 02 Jan 2020 01:38 PM PST

I recently got dark souls 2 on steam for myself and a friend and i was wondering if there was any kind of mods for the game which would allow us to play co-op as new characters and collect items together and play through the whole game without having to play 2 separate games.

Is there any point leveling up vigor in Dark Souls 2:SOTFS?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2020 12:57 PM PST

If you get taxed on HP per death whilst hollowed, is there any point channeling souls into this statistic if it will just end up being reduced to 50% after a lot of deaths? Is there any ring or item you can get to mitigate the effects of death? What should I channel my souls into instead, if I want to stand a chance in this game? Endurance? Vitality? Dexterity? Strength?

Trying to find a reason to keep playing

    Posted: 02 Jan 2020 02:14 AM PST

My apologies if there are any spelling or grammatical errors in the essay below.

As the title suggests, I have begun to get a bit annoyed by the game and am trying to get some kind of perspective which may give me the motivation to continue playing.

I also want to interject that I've played bloodborne, completed it about five times and just love it to death. That obviously inspired me to get the dark souls trilogy and so I've ds1 as well, which I also love, but not as much as bloodborne, though it comes fairly close.

So far I've reached the second bonfire in huntsman copse and my feelings of annoyance have begun to affect my enjoyment of the game. The last thing I did before I stopped playing was turn this corner and then a few seconds later I have three enemies with staffs and whips which have some dark aura around it. Each of these enemies take quite a few hits to kill each and I can't seem to be able to separate them enough to just get one hit in without dying.

By scouring this subreddit I've seen a lot of people state that this game is a lot more methodical and strategic than other dark souls games. With the experience of ds1 and bb I can definitely see this more strategic side with the combat encounters which are against 3 or less relatively weak, but not 1-hit kill enemies. But there have been various times throughout this game where I just get completely swarmed with enemies which each take quite a bit of my health each hit. Particularly the wharf place. Fuck that place and fuck the dogs.

So that brings me to my biggest gripe about the game and in my opinion the most important part of the game. The combat and how it functions. Having played bb and ds1 I've sort of gotten both ends of the spectrum in terms of the combat. Fast and slow. There's exceptions in each game to this but at its core this is what they are, and I love both of them. I would probably say fromsoft have the best grasp on combat in all of gaming.

So having played both games and enjoyed my favourite parts of these games over any other gaming experience, I came into ds2 expecting a kind of middle of the pack. Slow and fast combat with tense 1v1 encounters that focuses on the dodging capability of the player, and some ganks that aren't trivial but also not bullshit, making the player feel like a killing machine for destroying 3-ish tough but fair enemies or just wading through a dozen hollows or some shit. I was so wrong.

The 1v1 fights all range on the good to great spectrum I'll say that. No complaints there. But the ganks are so horrendously shit. There's just no ebb and flow to them like there was in bb and ds1. Even though their combat was so vastly different I adored every encounter with almost every enemy in both of these games. The single fights. The group fights. Everything worked.

In bb, central yharnam is just a testament to gank fights done to perfection. A bunch of smaller yharnamites in one area. Two tough but fair trolls that you can bait and kill easily if your careful or just charge in and out of both them trading some hits but ultimately not taking much damage because of the wonderful rally system.

In ds1 even though combat was a lot slower, so were the enemies. And so it still kept the ebb and flow. You could bait and kill one enemy. You could go upto a few of them and hit them with one swing and back away. The enemies leaving firelink and to undead parish are a prime example of this. At that point in the game, none of them are one hit kills and there are around 5 of them. It's very easy to get swarmed but even so it doesn't mean you will die if you do. Yeah you will probably have to Estus but at least you're alive.

Both of these scenarios in ds2 would most likely result in death since the enemies are faster in ds2 and chase you for quite some time so you can't lose 2 and fight 1, but you don't really match that increased speed when fighting so it feels clunky. That's reason number 1 combat in ds2 is not keeping me hooked.

Reason number 2, and I think the most important reason, is the lack of i frames during a parry or backstab. Both of these animations are the crux of good gank fights in bb and ds1. Both animations are long attacks that if you could get attacked while doing them would defeat their purpose. And that purpose is to cull the crowd. Usually in gank fights the enemies die in one parry or backstab so it's an effective way of crowd control. For some reason you can take damage during both animations in ds2. I've read it's supposed to be greatly reduced damage but either I don't know what greatly means or the game is bullshit. Either way, taking damage during a parry or backstab is a bad combat decision that essentially negates the point of doing them, which is to provide a few seconds of reprieve in a gank, in tandem with killing someone. So because of taking damage I've stopped doing either of these necessary things during a gank because I'll die to several other hits anyway.

Reading number 3 is agility. Fuck agility. Like reason 2, i frames are the crux of what makes these games tough but fair. Even if it isn't realistic, these games need them or they fall apart. So not having the usual 12-ish frames of invincibility for the entire game fucks with everything. And also wastes so many early game levels so you can get a respectable amount of i frames.

Sorry about the long post, but I needed to elaborate all my points so you could understand where I was coming from and give me good advice if you have it.

Just to reiterate my point, I am trying to find the motivation to continue playing this game, because even though I can beat it just like anyone else, if I don't have fun while doing it what's the point. So if you have some kind of perspective for me to take and use, then that would be greatly appreciated.

    Bosses

    Posted: 02 Jan 2020 11:20 AM PST

I've never been able to manage the red smelter demon first try. Only summons lucatiel for her quest line, I've never been able to manage myself with her either (not done the dlcs yet) and I've struggled on a few bosses on both my other playthroughs, this time round it's just clicked so far, not sure why though.

So I was just wondering really, what bosses have people struggled on and just had them click

I just got here and I've tried to beat the Dragonrider countless times but I just can't. All I have for damage is 30 soul arrows. I can't beat the stone guys because I literally don't have enough spells to kill them all. Are there any spells to help me do more damage in that area?

Please help me. I don´t know where to go.

    Posted: 02 Jan 2020 07:00 AM PST

I have a problem. Atm I play my first playthrough and i already killed:

    • Last Giant
    • The Pursuer
    • Dragonrider
    • Old Dragonslayer
    • Flexile Sentry
    • Lost sinner

Now i don´t know where to go. The are only the doors with the statue and this hole at the main area but i die if I jump down, even with the cat ring. I already removed one statue which opened a location with gave me one more flask, but now i can´t remove the statue in front of the door, which leads me to the Lost Bastille.

Could you please help me and tell me what to do?^^

I attacked the miracle lady and now she won’t switch the passageways and I have difficulty killing her.

    Posted: 01 Jan 2020 05:05 PM PST

So the woman that uses the one stone to switch the passageway in front of the stairs below Majula, I attacked her. Not on accident or anything, I just find her really annoying in the fact that she calls switching the passageway a "miracle" when she's using a lockstone. Also she's super condescending, so I attacked her because I remember that she drops the stone and I could use that. Anyway, she heals immediately when she's below half hp, and I can't get her to stop fighting even when I go to the bonfire and come back. Any help?

Some questions as I approach the end of the game

    Posted: 02 Jan 2020 09:34 AM PST

I'm nearly at the end of the game, I just need to kill Vendrick and maybe the ancient dragon. I know if I kill Vendrick I have to fight Aldia after Nashandra. Is the fight back to back, with no bonfire in-between? And if so, if I die to Aldia, do I have to beat Nashandra again? (Also, I've already killed the Throne Watcher and Defender, but if I beat them and I died against Nashandra, would I have to fight them again?)

And when is a good time to do the DLC? Should I do it before the final boss, or does the game carry on after I beat Aldia?

What are the minimum stat requirements for every npc gift/recruitment?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2020 01:58 AM PST

I know you need to recruit :

    3 Faith / Int: Straid 8 Faith/ Int: Felkin 10 Int: Carhillion

But there is gifts aswell from what I've seen:

20 Faith/Int to get something from Felkin and 30 Int to get something from Carhillion

Am I missing something? I wanna get all the minimum requirements for these things so I can respec and not worry about anything. (Also I know straid will still sell stuff to you after you respec but do the other two aswell?)

Can’t see my friends summon signs?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2020 04:01 AM PST

I've been trying to coop this game with my friends for quite a while, but their summon signs just won't appear.

I'm not softbanned, neither are they (he plays with other friends) Exact same soul memory (we make sure to kill the same enemies and everything just to make sure it's the exact same) We both have scholar of the first sin Used bone of order We don't just put our summon signs down at the exact same time (I've heard that can cause some issues) Both of our games are on the latest updates

I can see other people's summon signs, just not his. I've got no idea what else to try, I even bought a Ethernet cable and hooked that up so I have better connection and still nothing, could it still be a game issue, or an I just a bearer of the curse or something?

Edit: also tried name engraved ring Also have tried cross region play on and off

I had a pirated version of the game, but since I really fell in love with the game and the series in general, I bought all games of the franchise.I reinstalled it overnight and was excited to finally experience the online elements of the game.I started it up today and it simply opens a black window where I can move my mouse for a bit (I think the game works because my mouse changes into the game's cursor) and the window then simply closes. No "Dark Souls 2 stopped working" or anything like that, it just closes.
