Lore Theory: The Primordial Serpents and their (possible) origins and motivations

    Posted: 24 Dec 2019 03:49 PM PST

I was recently going through some more details in the lore of the Dark Souls series in general and one of the things that really struck me is the role of Primordial Serpents. So I sat down tried to see how they truly interact, the implicit facts, their overall behaviour and what these indicate.

My hypothesis is that the Primordial Serpents are among the direct descendants of Archdragons, perhaps among the oldest ever and possibly contemporary of the actual dragons. Being serpentine, scaly and grey are definitely a good visual cue, but that's the least of the leads to their true identity. Here are some facts about them:

    • Kaathe is the only character in DS1 to refer to Seath as "the traitor".
    • Frampt considers Seath's soul and weapons associated with him (crystal) worthless. One of the most valuable souls is Priscilla's, a half-dragon crossbreed and dragon weapons are worth way more than other weapons. The most valuable soul after that is Quelaag's, the one you need to kill to ring the second bell of awakening.
    • The bells of awakening reappear in DS3 in Archdragon peak. They are rung at the start and just before the fight with the King of the Storm/Nameless King. Bells are also rung by serpent-man summoners to summon Drakeblood knights and Havel knights. In general, the Path of the Dragon is heavily associated with deep slumber, dreams and the concept of awakening from said slumber.
    • Another item worth way more than many of its kind when fed to Frampt is the Calamity ring, the main drop from Kalameet.
    • The descriptions of the covetous serpent rings in DS3 refer to snakes as "incomplete dragons" who are covetous precisely because they can never be dragons.

Given these indicators, there's a very obvious connection between dragons and Primordial Serpents, even if their kinship is not well-established. So, how exactly does that tie in to the plot of DS1? Why are Kaathe and Frampt opposed in their goals and why do they urge the player to take one of two paths?

The explanation starts at their origins: The Primordial Serpents being related to dragons and possibly their contemporaries seek some sort of vengeance or reestablishment of the old order of the Age of the Ancients. However, they cannot do it themselves as they lack the strength and immortality of the dragons that they themselves never were. Hence they intend on using humans, who are easily manipulated and have them carry out their plans. The title "Primordial Serpent" itself is an indicator of a lie; they are not primordial because they are not Archdragons or Archtrees and the characterization "serpent" conceals their snake-like nature or envy and treachery.

Now, the plan they could possibly have is one that is up for debate, as multiple answers are equally possible. There is very clearly some level of coordination between serpents as evidenced by the Dark Lord ending. Multiple serpents appear bowing to the new Dark Lord and both Kaathe AND Frampt are mentioned to serve him. It is clear that they are acting collectively in their best interest and their plans do converge, despite being antithetical at face value (linking of the flame vs Age of Dark). The two scenarios I have in mind are these:

    • Both Frampt and Kaathe seek to upset the current natural order of light and dark and re-establish the age of everlasting beings; the age of ancients. Their goal is not to have the Age of Fire prolonged or the Ager of Dark initiated per se, but via the advent of either one to slowly cause the cycle to degenerate until the flames and the disparity are no more. In that sense, their antithesis is nothing more than a show and they are simply pretending so that they give the illusion of choice to the Chosen Undead.
    • Frampt and Kaathe in seeking the same degeneracy of the light-dark cycle are legitimately at odds at how to do it. Frampt thinks that linking the flame is the best way, as the fire will become weaker and weaker and the limbo between the end of Age of Fire and the beginning of Age of Dark will be perpetuated. Kaathe believes in allowing for the natural order to continue in the hope that the cycle will conclude and the first flame shall be no more once and for all. Hence their enmity towards each other, but their cooperation during the Dark Lord ending.

But do the Primordial Serpents benefit from the natural order being in complete chaos on the brink of destruction? Aren't they in danger? The answer is paradoxically no. The Primordial Serpents seem to be dwelling deep into the earth; Kaathe himself appears in the Abyss. They are well hidden in the depths of the earth, ostensibly in some sort of deep slumber. They revel in the destruction of the natural order that put an end to the age where they reigned supreme (or their kin did anyway) and, unaffected by said destruction, patiently await for their time to come again, moving pieces on a chess board accordingly and covertly influencing the outcome of the Chosen Undead's journey.

With DS3's usurpation of fire ending we see how there's something beyond the cycle of light and dark in what we presume is an ensuing Age of Hollows, undying and everlasting in a flameless (but also dark-less) world. This was Kaathe's "dying wish" (as Yuria's Japanese dialogue reveals) and shows how indeed, the Primordial Serpents slowly intended for this outcome: a state of the first flame where it could be usurped, kept forever feeble, giving room for a new everlasting age lacking in disparity.

All these might seem a bit farfetched or overly hopeful at finding insight in what can be more easily interpreted as "vaguely evil/treacherous NPCs", but I believe that there's something going on here and many elements of both DS1 and DS3 seem to confirm at least parts of my assertions.

EDIT: I spoke to friend about this and they responded to the point about Frampt and the value of souls by stating that Gwyn and Gwyndolin's soul are worth the most, Gwyn's sword is worth a ton as well and lightning weapons are worth more than regular weapons. That can indeed indicate that Frampt is either a) true to his intentions because he "lost his sense" as Kaathe tells or b) there is a multifaceted reality to how Frampt values items. Perhaps Frampt values items per se, but also values items in the sense of wanting them gone. So, while in disdain for Seath and his items, he also has no use or fear of them, but everything related to Gwyn's line and the ability to slay dragons is "valued" to tempt the Chosen Undead to get rid of them by feeding them to him. Because, why would he want to eat Gwyn's soul and not urge the player to offer it to the Warriors of Sunlight instead, granting him powerful lightning miracles?

Another point not mentioned is how Frampt also seems to value Havel's armour and Velka's rapier, items related to characters that have some sort of connection to killing the Gods. Again, if a) is a possibility, it could just mean Frampt wants them gone more than he actually values them, but if it's b), it makes sense in the context of him actually wanting the current establishment gone.

Today, my wife did something incredible

    Posted: 24 Dec 2019 11:19 AM PST

I've never posted here so I hope this adheres to the rules, I've always been more of a lurker. But here's a small wholesome story for you chosen undeads.

So, ever since I was introduced to Dark Souls around 4 years ago, I've been playing FromSoft games religiously. I've finished DS1 over 10 times. The only platinum I ever got is Bloodborne. Since I finished Sekiro I've been itching to get back on it for the amazing combat. I never stop babbling about how much I love those games, and she got sick of watching me play them. She loves the music however, and eventually she softened up a bit when I got her involved by explaining the lore of whatever I'm playing.

Tonight is a combination of Christmas and my birthday, although my birthday is more like 10 days away, but apparently she felt it's more fitting to do this now so we have something to do in the coming week since we're off of work.

    What she did, is this

I'm speechless. Time to go play some board games!

Merry Christmas, and don't you dare go hollow!

    Trade Sif Soul?

    Posted: 25 Dec 2019 12:07 AM PST

Hey guys. So I want to get the platinum trophy right? One of the trophies I need to unlock is the knights honor achievement, which means I need to get all the rare weapons, which means getting the boss weapons. For Sif, I need to get all three weapons with his soul. The thing is, I used his soul on my first play through without realizing you can use his soul to make weapons and that you need all three for the achievement. I know you can play up to new game++ to get them, but since I consumed his soul the first time, I'd have to go to new game+++. I was wondering if there is a way that someone can just trade me the soul instead? If so, lmk if any of y'all are interested. I play on PS4 and my user is mlg_pootis.

    Black Knight Sword

    Posted: 25 Dec 2019 12:09 AM PST

I know you can't reinforce Black Knight Weapons above 5+ but I'm not sure if 306 Damage is enough to carry me through the game. I do have a +10 Claymore which I like almost as much but by looking at charts it seems like reinforcing it worth we won't even bring it close to 300 anyway. Should I just keep going with the 306 or at one point is it going to be irrelevant?

Anastacia got killed by Lautrec shortly after starting the game

    Posted: 24 Dec 2019 08:12 PM PST

Hey friends, I'm on my 8,000th playthrough of Dark Souls, and this game is still surprising me. I was doing a pretty standard playthrough, but when I reached the Undead Parish and took the elevator down, the bonfire was already gone and Anastacia killed. I went right back to the Parish but Lautrec wasn't even in his cell.

I had to google it, and just found out that apparently Lautrec will kill the fire keeper either after ringing both Bells of Awakening (which I thought was the only time that would happen), or if you grab the Blighttown Fire Keeper Soul. Right when I got to Firelink Shrine, the first thing I did was get the Firekeeper souls from New Londo Ruins and then used the Master Key and did a suicide run to get the one in Blighttown. So I guess that sealed Anastacia's fate early.

I don't think she actually dies until you've at least been to the Undead Parish, though.

Has this happened to anyone else? What else is still surprising you after hundreds of hours with the game?

I am (obviously) a new player. I got the remastered version of the game for Christmas, I got through the asylum pretty easy because of my 100+ hours of bloodborne. I then got to Firelink Shrine. I have no fricking clue where to go.

    Posted: 24 Dec 2019 05:34 AM PST

I am playing darksouls for the first time and just playing to some music, it's a quite hype one full of songs that get me hyped up, except dancing queens there because I guess I put it on, so I get to the fog gate and it starts playing, so basically all I wanted to say was, I had my butt clenched fighting gaping dragon while dancing queen was telling me I'm allowed to die.

Don't know why but just wanted to post it.
