Welcome to the weekly Dark Souls mod announcement and discussion thread!

Beware! Use of mods whilst connected to the internet can cause you to get banned from online play!

For more information, or to continue the discussion visit /r/ModSouls

Using mods (PC only!) to enhance or add new content to the Souls games is great fun! It is important, however, to understand that mods are against From's EULA/ToS, so there is a great risk of being banned when using them due to From's anti-cheat--which is deployed in most versions of the Souls games.

Versions of the games where modding is safe due to no anti-cheat:

Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition

Versions of the games where modding carries a very high risk of being banned:

    Dark Souls: Remastered

    Dark Souls II

Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin

    Dark Souls III

    Our recommendations for safe modding

*This advice is intended for first-time or relatively inexperienced modders who want to get into modding without risking a ban on their main Steam account.

    Basic Steps:

    Make a separate Steam account

Use Steam's Family Sharing feature to provide your new account with access to your main Steam account's game library.

Install games to be used with the new account in a separate directory.

Once you've found your mods be sure to read (and follow) the mod author's instructions carefully prior to installation.

Set Steam to "off line" mode.

Install the mods and perform any necessary setup.

Enjoy the fun and interesting experiences offered by mods!

Be sure to remove all file components of the mod before going back online!

My thoughts so far coming from DS1 and DS3

    Posted: 23 Dec 2019 05:13 AM PST

I started with DS3, played through it many many times, and then got wayyyy deep into PvP. Recently I've been getting a little irked about the state of DS3's PvP and decided to take a break to play DS2. Not quite sure why people hate this game, all I saw on the DS1 and DS3 sub was all the things the game "does wrong". I've thoroughly enjoyed the 10 hours I've played so far!

The game is different, it's got a lot of things that are not in the other games, but I think that's why I'm enjoying it so much. I was expecting it to be way different, I wasn't hoping for it to be the same. I'm so used to the other games, that it's really nice to see different areas and use different game mechanics. I'm playing SOTFS on PC, and I'm an eye candy nerd so I'm playing it in 4K max settings and it's a nice looking game.

I'm really enjoying the overall aesthetic of the game also. It has a charm about it that neither of the other two games have in terms of visuals, but I haven't quite figured out exactly what it is.

Anyway, this is probably all over the place but these are my thoughts so far. I'm hoping to get another 3-4 hours in today after work!

    The Worst Weapon Awards

    Posted: 22 Dec 2019 06:11 PM PST

It's often said that in DS2, any weapon can be good. But some of them just plain aren't worth the effort. These awards are for them. Decisions are influenced by comments I've seen, but mostly are just my opinion. So if you see your favorite weapon on here, feel free to tell me why it's actually the best weapon and I just don't know anything.

The Obligatory Broken Sword Award - Let's just get the low hanging fruit out of the way immediately. The Broken Straight Sword is crap. Everyone knows it's crap. It was designed to be crap. And ever since poise was fixed, it can't even Pain Train. Moving on.

The Stat Stick Award - Presented to the weapon that no one in their right mind would ever actually use as a weapon, but it raises your stats a little so you keep it in the off hand anyway. Let me tell you, it was a fierce competition between the Handmaid's Ladle and the Work Hook. Both are terribad weapon that can give some crucial stat boosts on challenge runs, but at the end of the day the award has to go to... The Chime of Screams. Like I said, both the Ladle and the Hook are useful. Aint no one using the Chime of Screams. Yeah I said it. Chime of Screams is a worse weapon than the Handmaid's Ladle.

Made of Glass Award - Presented to the weapon that might actually be good if it wasn't so fragile. There were a lot of candidates for this round, but there could only be one clear victor: Azal's Staff. The single most powerful staff in the game, but it breaks in four shots. It also doesn't help that you have to get past Aava and Maldron to get to it, it need sTwinkling Titanite and that it has a ridiculously slow casting speed.

Junk Rare Award - For the rare weapons that are just plain worse than the common options. I thought I had a slam dunk in the form of the Infantry Axe; a rare drop that is immediately outclassed in every way by the Hand Axe. But there are actual reasons to use the Infantry Axe. Maybe you think it looks better. Maybe you got a lucky drop and just need it to get to the Cardinal Tower. None of those apply to our actual winner: the Old Mirrah Greatsword. The incredibly rare drop that looks identical to the quest reward you just got but is strictly worse in every single way.

The Awesome But Impractical Award - Just because something is bad doesn't mean it's not a lot of fun to use. Sometimes you just have to take the stupidest weapons for a spin and have a blast doing it. Most of the candidates for this were dual wielded Strength weapons, naturally. Dual Smelter Swords were rejected for being too awesome. Dual Chicken Wings were rejected due to me not wanting to be pounded into gravy by enraged Str mains for daring to say it's a bad weapon. Clearly the weapons that most embody "bad but fun" are: Orma's and Reeve's Greatshields. They're heavy, slow, short ranged, easy to punish, require 50 Strength despite barely any scaling and are just plain silly. But if you somehow manage to land an L2 on a PvP opponent, it's like a shot of pure dopamine straight to the brain. They're terrible, and I can't recommend them enough.

The Boring But Practical Award - In the exact opposite corner are weapons that are unquestionably good, but no one has ever had any fun playing with or against them. I'm not going to beat around the bush. This one goes to the Rapier. A weapon often evangelized as the best weapon in the game, when in fact it's good at doing exactly one thing in the most boringly efficient manner possible. Well, it's also actually pretty good at parrying, but when was the last time you saw someone do anything but R1 with it? Special mention goes to the Estoc and Ice Rapier for being interesting weapons for PvE, but used exclusively in PvP by people who have made it their life's goal to eliminate all forms of joy. Don't @ me.

The "Wow, They Really Thought Bleed Was Going To Be Good, Huh?" Award - Some weapons are exactly like good weapons but they traded physical damage for bleed. I'm not going to go into all the reasons why bleed sucks here, but I suspect it's another casualty of troubled development. Anyway, there were lots of good candidates. The Bound Hand Axe, Morningstar, Notched Whip, Ashen Warrior Sword, Greatsword of the Forlorn and Chariot Lance are all contenders, but I'm going to have to give the award to the Curved Twinblade. The fact that you have to either get 50 kills in the Brotherhood of Blood or go to NG++ to get it really pushes it over the top.

The Playing Hard To Get Award - Most late game equipment is really good, and generally the harder you have to work to get something, the better it is. Not for these. These are the weapons that you triumph over adversity to get and then you're just left asking "that's it?" The Blue Smelter Sword was in the running, but it is actually better than the red one and the two together look better than two of one or the other so it gets a pass. The Sorcerer's Twinblade was my favored choice for this lot, but I had to begrudgingly admit that under some conditions it's actually a little better than either the basic Twinblade or the starting Sorcerer's Staff. Barely. The Possessed Armor Greatbow is a bit closer, but it's merely not good rather than actively bad. Same deal with the Malformed Shell. It's not bad, it's just kind of boring. No, the title can only really go to one weapon: the Pickaxe. Because after dragging a pig from one end of the level to the other, your reward is a great hammer with terrible tracking and a sweet spot.

The Fashion Disaster Award - Lets face it, some weapons are just plain ugly, and every serious Souls vet knows fashion always trumps function. The Sunset Staff with its distracting pinwheel bits is a contender. The Sanctum Mace which seems to have some moss growing on it that the Bearer of the Curse never bothered to take off makes me twitch. And all of the Black Dragon weapons are unnecessarily spiky and would probably not be able to cut worth shit. But the absolute worst has to be the Spider Fang. Not only does it not look like a sword, it doesn't look like a spider's fang either. It looks like a weird shaped tree root that the BotC just picked up somewhere and I hate looking at it.

The Cool But Terrible Award - Full disclosure, I made this category just for one weapon because it doesn't really fit anywhere else, but it's just. So. Bad. That's right, it's the Ivory Straight Sword. A weapon that looks so cool on the surface and then jut gets worse and worse the more you learn about it. I could go into detail, but instead I'll just say: It's the only lightsaber I have ever seen that I don't want to use.

Forgettable Weapon Runners Up - Before we get to the final category, lets take a moment to reflect on some weapons that aren't necesarily bad, but you probably forgot existed and/or never used.

    • Black Flamestone Dagger
    • Royal Greatsword
    • Old Knight Ultra Greatsword
    • Lion greataxe
    • Aldia Hammer / Black Dragon Warpick
    • Spear
    • Scythe
    • Great Machete
    • Bloodied Whip
    • Bell Keeper Bow
    • Olenford's Staff
    • Protective Chime

The Cream of the Crap Award - Here it is folks, my personal choice for worst weapon in the game. This one combines traits from several other categories and adds some extra horribleness on top. It's difficult to acquire. Takes rare upgrade materials. Is very similar to another weapon but weaker and with bleed. It has a horrible drawback without any real advantages to make up for it. And worst of all: it looks so fucking cool that it suckers you into making an entire new character jut to use it, only to find out it fucking sucks. That's right, the worst weapon in the game is: The Scythe of the Forlorn! The weapon that's still a worse version of the Scythe of Want even after you sacrifice a quarter of your health and a ring to hollowing

Is Dagger essentially the best weapon for single bosses?

    Posted: 23 Dec 2019 10:31 AM PST

The Dagger/Royal Dirk/Black Flamestone Dagger, all share the 2h R1 fast damage combo, it's stamina Cheap, has a high dps, takes great advantage of ROB+2, Infusions and Buffs, and it's hard to miss it on most solo bosses, specially the BFD with such a range and the highest damage of all daggers, infused or normal it gets the best of scalings and base damage, as bosses care very little about poise damage you can just hit them 3/6 times per chance dealing a lot of damage, it's even better than rapiers unless you care about counter damage, something i don't do. The only thing that comes close is Powerstancing UGS, but that requires twice the upgrading materials, the infusion materials, the buffing materials, and tons of stamina.

bandai namco, thank you you are actually awesome!

    Posted: 23 Dec 2019 01:24 AM PST

so after 3 hours of not being able to connect with a friend, i came to the conclusion that my cheat engine table (that i used for months but never for something bad like 1shotting or shit) got me banned. i wrote an email to bandai namco and they answered me telling me that i did get banned but not because of what i did, because a player who invaded me gave me +10 armor, that can only be upped to a max of +5. and that is why the system got me. so they unbanned me.

they also said that after manual checking, they did see that i used a fly cheat to fly around, but as i said never to harm anyone. they warned me that this could still get me into trouble, but thats all they said. they unbanned me. thank you very much bandai you guys are awesome! <3

Hello there, in need of advice/help

    Posted: 23 Dec 2019 10:51 AM PST

So, I just started a new game as a sorcerer. I just beat both the bosses of the forest of fallen giants and I currently have 27k souls. What should I lvl up? Attunement for more slots and I frames? Intelligence so I can buy more spells? Or anything else? So I'm at the 1st bonfire of post bastille currently. Should I continue there or go to heide's tower to cheese the dragon rider for some souls?

    Fume Knight phase 2 only

    Posted: 23 Dec 2019 01:37 PM PST

So I played through ds2 several times back in the days on my computer and I remember very clearly my many attempts at defeating Fume Knight. Him starting the fight with an insanely huge greatsword and a second one, way smaller, but let's face it, still pretty big.

Then once midlife, I can see him dropping his small sword to enhance his big one with that abyssal, dark fire.

More recently, I bought on a whim all 3 DS games on ps4 and went on a journey to platinum them all, but that's not the point here.

The point is : when I reached Fume Knight on ps4, the guy started with the burning greatsword immediately. I died a few times, with no exceptions to it. I did not get to see his phase 1.

Did I do something to make it happen? I briefly looked it up on the internet and didn't find the answer.

Also worth mentioning both games were Sotfs éditions.

Tl;dr Fume Knight started in phase 2 on my run, is that a thing I didn't know about?

    Fume Knight

    Posted: 23 Dec 2019 09:13 AM PST

Ok what..the..fuck, these were my first thoughts upon going toe to toe with this colossal fucking cunt. I play as a Knight who is currently stripped down to nothing but a burlap sack, he looks like a zombie and I'm using my trusty axe that seems to be the only weapon that does noticeable damage to this guy. I have yet to throw my fist against a wall due to dying to this boss but I fear it's inevitable if I keep heading down this path of getting 3 hits in then dying. I would like to hear any tips/strategies you lovely people have so that I can keep my sanity in tact, thankyou in advance :D

    Favorite Weapons (I'm curious)

    Posted: 23 Dec 2019 10:58 AM PST

Wanting to know what you all prefer. Trying to get an idea (a poll in a sense) going on what is legitimately the most popular weapon categories or maybe even a singular weapon in general..this can include catalysts and even down to shields if you do that. No limits just honesty.

I'll start off: Santiers Spear...yes I know I know, but its convenient, at times unpredictable, diverse, and its efficient allowing for more souls spent elsewhere on levels. Really all this weapon needs is Raw, Min stats, and upgrade and bam full physical potential.

    Favorite equipment? (Weapons, armor, rings)

    Posted: 23 Dec 2019 01:04 AM PST

Hey, I was wondering, what are everyone's favorite weapons / armor to use in this game? I'm asking because I'm using what I'm comfortable with but I'm open to exploring new styles.

    Currently using:

Vengarl's Helm +1, Alonne Captain Armor, Jester's Gloves, Alonne Knight Leggings... Longsword +10, Royal Kite Shield, Long Bow +8

Guess I'll put my rings too while I'm at it

Strength Ring, Stone Ring, Chloranthy Ring +1, Ring of Binding,

    ...

I was hoping to start a discussion maybe, but maybe if you could recommend some new gear for a more strength type build?

That'd be cool. But what do you people use????

Yeah I have like a ton of stuff in my inventory and I've bought random stuff I thought seemed cool but I've barely used any of it. Chose Alonne armor cuz it provides high defense. That's about it.

Sanctum Mace seemed cool til I realized it poisons you with each swing

I've tried so many times. I've tried to kill him so so so many times. The rest of this game has been really easy so far, but this boss has defeated me. I just can't kill him. I have ok stamina, I use a great sword (the blue one) and I can roll pretty fast. He's just such BS. Any tips would be nice, or anyone that's on Xbox one that's willing to just join my game and kill him. I just give up.
