I'm currently writing a paper for college about the Dark Souls series and how the games have changed over time.

If you have some spare time please consider filling out this survey. It should only take 10 minutes of your time.

Edit: Added a no preference option to some of the questions

Edit2: If you want to see the responses then here's the link

Edit3: There's been more than 1000 responses in under 5 hours, thanks so much :D

Dark Souls resonates with people suffering from depression?

    Posted: 20 Nov 2019 05:27 AM PST

I've read countless comments here and there, even seen many YouTube videos. For some reason the Dark Souls franchise seems to resonate with people suffering from depression. I, personally, have had a similar experience, but I have not had it with any other games.

Why do you think this is, jokes aside? Experiences?

Personally I haven't been able to put my finger on it. I currently have mild depression, back in the day when I was younger it was diagnosed as serious and dangerous. I'd call the worlds "resigned" - in the games, the player usually enters a world in which everything has already gone terribly wrong possibly thousands of years before. Somehow the games have resonated with me, and I have felt happy exploring the bleak, desperate and macabre worlds of Dark Souls. The games kind of remind me of life in many ways, as I have said in other posts, and I find the philosophical, existential aspects, as well as the aspects of life and death, very entertaining and interesting unlike in many other games. I've read people can become happy about environments that match their moods - apparently this is why some people, for example, possibly like rainy days a lot. I guess in my case, this could be it.

Edit: Thanks for the gold! Been interesting reading peoples thoughts.

    Edit2: Wow platinum even! Thanks!

    Completed Zweihander Playthrough

    Posted: 20 Nov 2019 08:32 PM PST

Just moments ago I finally managed to beat Gwyn using my Zweihander build. I also used the Giant Armour and Mask of the Father for the survivability, poise, and equip load. I was amazed at how easy it made some boss fights I previously struggled with in other playthroughs, most notably the Bell Gargoyles and Ornstein and Smough, as well as more standard enemies like the Black Knights and the giant sentinels in Anor Londo. In the entire game there were only a few bosses I found myself struggling against, those being the Moonlight Butterfly (did it somewhat early, fat rolling in that fight sucks), Manus and Kalameet (first time doing either, only fights I feel the Zweihander didn't give me a strong advantage against). Glad I finally got to use it, it is a a fun weapon to play with. I look forward to invalidating difficulty with sorcery next.

Tl;dr Zweihander is awesome and makes thing pretty easy. Would recommend.

Which souls boss do you think is the most unfair

No bed of chaos because that would be too easy. Also, elaborate on why do you think the boss is unfair.

Is Dragonslayer Spear a good weapon for dex/faith builds ?

    Posted: 20 Nov 2019 09:40 PM PST

Hello, I'm doing a Faith build prioritizing on Faith and Dex. I plan to get my Faith up to 50 and Dex to around 20-25 and spam lightning spears with dusk crown ring on. However, I also need a decent melee weapon. Is the Dragonslayer Spear a good idea ? It's the only weapon I can find with a high dex requirement and which scales with faith.

Also,at 24 Str, 25 dex, and 50 Faith, will an Occult Halberd +5 be a good idea ? Or should I go for a Divine halberd +10 or ascend a different weapon altogether ?

    Invaded in a NG

    Posted: 20 Nov 2019 12:03 PM PST

I was on the bottom of the bridge underneath the Hellkite Dragon when I heard that all too familiar sound of someone invading. I didn't want to deal with him as I hadn't touched a bonfire in a minute and didn't wanna backtrack.

    Spartan kicked and no regrets...

I'm surprised a wormhole doesn't open up when you give Andre his hammer to upgrade in NG+. I would love to hear his comments on how you got hot hammer 😂

Is it worth it to ascend your weapon or should I just augment if need be ?

    Posted: 21 Nov 2019 12:38 AM PST

I mix these two up all the time, so I hope I've put it correctly:

    • Ascending weapon = permanent damage type (e.g. fire) for a weapon
    • Augmenting = applying something like a resin for a temporary damage type (e.g. fire) for a weapon

Some +15 weapons are stronger (damage wise) then a +5 ascended weapon. Also, if I understood correctly, the stat scaling bonuses are also removed if you ascend a weapon.

So far, I've only once augmented my weapon. With the gold pine resin, for the fight with the Gaping Dragon, since I happened to have it and it was weak against lightning. Every other fight (boss or non-boss) was without any ascension or augmentation. But I want to know; am I missing out on something if I don't ascend my weapons or am I better off just upgrading them to the max and use a resin if the situation calls for it?

I can't be loud in my apartment but I'd like to provide commentary for my viewers. Someone recommend asmr type commentary where I whisper and amplify that sound. I'd like to ask the community, would this be any interesting or is it a bad idea?

Iron Golem knew my plans and did not accept them

    Posted: 20 Nov 2019 12:56 PM PST

On my SL1 I decided to be an arse and just get Tarkus to do all the work. I felt I deserved a short rest after the funhouse and knowing what was waiting for me over the wall.

My ever reliable black iron big shot proceeded to get stuck on the cliff edge and I watched as the golem drained his health. At about a quarter left he was picked up and was briefly free to get two hits in, but then got stuck again and died shortly thereafter.

So me and my +10 hand axe proceeded to have a great time.

And then I died about twenty times on the rafters and went to bed.

    Darksouls spoild me

    Posted: 20 Nov 2019 12:11 PM PST

(Wished there was a humour tagg)

Got the witcher 3 recently for my switch but just couldn't get into the game. Combat was nothing compared to darksouls, and felt really barebones and not challenging at all. This ended up making me revisiting the game and I couldn't stop playing till now.

Its been effecting every other melee combat based game ive ever played and it really... it really is something to think about.

A game so good, it makes any other game feel boring

Let that statement sink in a little bit

Not shitting on the witcher 3 or anything, it was darksouls that made me this way. It spoild me

    Uchigatana +15

    Posted: 20 Nov 2019 11:39 AM PST

Hello, This is my 1st Playthrough of DSR on PS4. Offline.

    I got 45 DeX 16 STR 30 VIT 30 endurance.

I killed the Undead murchant early on and took the Uchi. Now its +15. I just wrecked the 4 kings in 3rd try.

Will I ever need another weapon? How far will the Uchigatana +15 take me?

Edit: my DEX is 45 not 40!

The lore of darksouls is so interesting

    Posted: 20 Nov 2019 04:58 PM PST

I specifically find the first born of Gwyn to be rather intriguing. We know that 1. he was stricken from the records for ither doing something against the gods wishes or losing something great 2. He was a god of war and he was completely erased from anor lando however I believe there is still a statue of him. There is a statue of a woman holding a child in the undead parish I think it might be the burg but it's directly across from the bridge with the dragon it's the sunlight alter right? I believe that the baby holding a sword is the former god of war.

Yeah I don't know anything else if anyone can elucidate me that would be much appreciated
