I just beat Ornstein and Smough for the first time.

    Posted: 21 Nov 2019 01:45 PM PST

It took like several tries, several hours and help from both Solaire and a kind stranger, but in the end it came down to me vs super Ornstein one on one and I prevailed. The combination of relief and hype I feel are unrivaled. Sorry for the pointless post, but I just had to let it out and no one else would care, lol.

PS, screw you Frog Man for invading my world and taking my hard farmed humanity while my was trying to do this.

Connections Between Tolkien and Dark Souls

    Posted: 21 Nov 2019 10:50 AM PST

I'm curious if there is anywhere that catalogs all the tentative connections between the Dark Souls universe and Tolkien- it seems like the Berserk influence has been heavily mined, but not as much time has been spent on the possible Tolkien influence. I think it's easy to dismiss because LotR is so deeply ingrained in our fictional landscape that a lot of the connections could be taken for granted or seen as generalized mythical elements. However, with Bloodborne and the relationship to H.P. Lovecraft it became very clear that Western Fiction has the capability of influencing From's direction, so I think it's worth looking at again. I'm by no means an expert in either Dark Souls or Tolkien lore, but these are just a list of things I've personally noticed- would love to hear what others might have noticed, or just how valid you think these may be

    • Anor Londo- this is the most obvious one that you get heard thrown around the most. Anor is is the Elvish name for sun, and for me this kind of blatant reference is a pretty good signpost that LotR held a bigger influence than people give credit- From is essentially pointing right at Tolkien, telling us where to look. Although I'll admit it is always possible that it's just a fun little Easter egg

    • Gold-Hemmed Black Set is about as close as you can get to looking like the Nazgul

    • And to me the Nameless King looks strikingly similar to The Witch King on his Fellbeast especially in the Peter Jackson films. The mood the two give off is very similar, both fearsome warlords

    • The Story of the Four Kings is very similar to that of the Nazgul (and they also share a visual synergy), being tricked by an Evil Lord to do their bidding, semi-existing in a Wraith form, who operate as a whole unit. On top of that you need to be wearing the Covenant of Artorias to be able to interact with them- just like how you can only see the Nazgul's true form when wearing the One Ring. It allows one to traverse the Abyss, where the One Ring allows the wearer to enter the Wraith-world.

    • Still going on with this, the flooding of New Londo reminds me of the flooding of Numenor. From my understanding, the Numenoreans were a race of humans blessed with long life who ruled over this island city state called Numenor. They were given these blessings by what are essentially angels. However, Sauron convinced their king to attempt to gain eternal life, and began worshiping the dark. As a punishment, Numenor was flooded by a great wave. New Londo on the other hand was ruled by the Four Kings, who had been given a piece of Gwyn's Lord Soul as a blessing. Turned to worship the Dark by Kaathe, they began to harvest the humanity of their inhabitants, resulting in the eventual flooding of New Londo. While the details aren't exactly the same, I think this is one of the most interesting connections I've come across

    • In general Gwyn's style of giving away pieces of his soul, which are incredibly powerful, to those who he wishes to reward reminds me a lot of Sauron giving away the Rings of Power- they were given away before he had revealed himself as evil, and the rings did grant great abilities, even if his plan was to use them for control.

That's all I can think of off the top of my head. Not very robust I'll admit, but like I said, I think it's an area that needs further research- there seems to be enough there to warrant another look through that lenses. Let me know what you guys think!

During my last D&D game, things got a bit Souls inspired.

    The Rotting Leviathan.

I wanted to make the players explore a series of decaying biological caverns and spine rib hallways. Throughout the whole dungeon you can hear the gargantuan creatures heartbeat.

Soulsborne & Sekiro Difficulty - College Survey

    Posted: 21 Nov 2019 08:24 AM PST

Hey guys, I'm doing a survey for my Game Design dissertation. Chose to do it on one of my favourite subgenres.

The survey is a study on the opinions of players regarding the level(s) of difficulty playing FromSoftware games and the application of a feature similar to Assist Mode from Celeste. It focuses on FromSoftware games (Demon Souls, Dark Souls , Bloodborne or Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice) and requires previous gameplay experience of any of these titles. You don't need experience with Celeste.

It's quite short, should take 3-4 minutes, no more.Every response is hugely appreciated, it really benefits me, if you have a few spare minutes please fill the survey below:

    LINK REMOVED

EDIT: I got 550 responses and that's definitely enough, there's a ton of really great gems with super beneficial knowledge in these responses. Thank you everyone who responded or clicked this post in attempts to. Couldn't ask for a better turnout!

    HUGE THANKS!

I'm on my second playthrough of DS PS3 and I was offline for the entirety of my first playthrough I just accidentally got into a duel

    Posted: 22 Nov 2019 03:29 AM PST

So I'm playing through again I grabbed some firebombs and killed the asylum demon first time I saw him then. Then I was running around the undead burg because I can and saw a gravelord servent invasion sign and was like... WHAT HE HEC LETS DO IT. I get summoned into his world and I'm like okay I guess so I run down to where he is. We are outside of the undead Burg bonfire down the little stairs and out in the big area where there used to be three dudes And he bows to me. So I'm like ok m8 and bow back like a gentleman then he starts circling me so I start circling I'm carrying a Target shield and the thief's dagger and otherwise I'm completely naked he is in some sort of robe and is carrying a giant ass scythe

so I walk up to him and just an explosion of some blackish fire comes out of the ground and I instantly die... so like that was an experience

Edit: OMG speech-to-text is to text is the worst lemme fix that

    Advice for Ornstein and Smough?

    Posted: 21 Nov 2019 06:41 PM PST

I managed to get past everything else up to this point, but these two in particular are beating me to a pulp, and I'm not sure if my stats are too low, as I'm SL 45, and I'm using a claymore +6. Is their any tips to take them down?

    To the random generous invader

    Posted: 21 Nov 2019 05:33 AM PST

I started a new file the other day and was frolicking through the Undead Burg when I was invaded. The guy ran up to me, ran in some circles, then dropped 300 arrows, 70 firebombs, and a longbow. He then waved and then black separation crytalled out of there. I was shocked, and so ticked! Here's to the people that still make this game fresh in new ways!

FML: Finished Lost Izalith for the first time....

    Posted: 21 Nov 2019 03:00 PM PST

So on playing through this section for the first time (playing on switch), I encountered like 20 of these large demons.

Very strong melee fighter. Hit very hard.

I proceed to play ULTRA cautious and range kill them all. I figured I wouldn't want to miss anything, but exploring with them alive is dangerous. And they dont respawn

Spending souls on hundreds of dragonslayer arrows later, I pick and choose my timings and angles.

Found a few camping spots. Playing around with the agro. About 40 minutes later I killed the last one!!!

I can only find a few items tho. That's weird... there has to be some secret here.

Look up a guide. Dude just walks by them all and picks up same items and goes on to next area in 2 minutes.

    Fml.

    Edit: I'm on switch

Is anyone willing to drop me a plus 5 falchion on Nintendo Switch?

    Posted: 21 Nov 2019 10:19 PM PST

I have no idea how to get it. I will give you 2 Balder Side Swords in return. The password is 1234, outside the undead church with the 3 hollows.

If you could change the weapon system so that it has more movesets and Weapon Skills, what would you change?

    Posted: 21 Nov 2019 01:47 PM PST

e.g. exchange Grants 2hR2 with a overhead slam like Demon's Greataxe and make it the WA instead.

Also, give the Moonlight Greatsword it's Weapon Art with an explosion that works similiar to combustion.

What's your favorite ring and which one do you think is best?

    Posted: 21 Nov 2019 01:33 PM PST

For me, the Slumbering Dragoncrest Ring is one of my favorites for PvE. Some of the best rings in my opinion is the Cloranthy Ring and in some situations Havel's Ring, both for obvious reasons.

I tried to collect every single collectible item in both Dark Souls and Dark Souls 2 for months

    Posted: 21 Nov 2019 03:40 PM PST

I have one character that was leveled so high so he can use any weapon and any armor, in both games. Have beat both games all the bosses on NG+7. I farmed very hard for all the weapons, all armor sets, all magic of all types, all special items, full stacks of every time of arrow. I almost complete my challenge, but week ago my HDD is broke so i have lose everything.
