    I did it!

    Posted: 13 Nov 2019 09:24 PM PST

Well boys, I finally did it. 53 hours of hard labor. I picked this game up from my local library about a month ago just to pass time on the train (Switch) and have barely been able to put it down since. I had no idea I'd fall so hard for this brilliant, unique, creative masterpiece of a game. Never played anything like it.

I finished level 81 with a str/vit/end build using the Claymore for the first 70% of the game and finishing it out with the Demon's Greataxe. At the beginning, the run up to the Taurus Demon probably took me about six hours because I was such a noob. But by the end I was absolutely flying through the game. That progression feels so good in a single player game and is such a rare experience. Other parts that gave me trouble were O+S obviously, the fucking Capra Demon, Blighttown, the lower part of Sen's, and those two archers in Anor Londo.

Now that I'm done, which game should I play next? Also, from looking at tier lists I can tell I missed a lot of bosses , specifically all the DLC bosses, Crossbreed Priscilla, Darkbreed Gwyndolin, and the Stray Demon. Do I have to start from the beginning of NG+ in order to make my way to them again and if so is that worth it?

    Crystal Caves are pure cancer

    Posted: 13 Nov 2019 09:18 PM PST

Long time lurker on reddit as a whole but this forced me to post. I've been cruising on through DS after beating BB and attempting all 3 dark souls but it's been a while since I've been so frustrated with a single zone. The invisible bridges were straight from hell. The only glimmer of joy I had in here was finding not one but TWO vagrants. But they were both bait to make me fall off an invisible ledge. Luckily, it all culminated in killing Seathe in one go. God I love/hate this game!

I'm dropping items like breadcrumbs, do you think the vagrant spawn rate will noticeably increase?

    Posted: 13 Nov 2019 09:52 PM PST

My entire first playthrough I only found two of these guys. Apparently they spawn from dropped items/lost bloodstains so if I run around Johnny Appleseeding excess items there should be a corresponding increase in vagrant population, right?

Never been so happy to be stuck at Gargoyles.

    Posted: 13 Nov 2019 11:25 PM PST

I've been playing DS1 since the release of the Prepare to Die edition back when I was in high school. I got gud several years into my obsession, finally beating O&S in high school and running the game dozens of times since it "clicked." Last week, I decided to finally dabble with a build that didn't rely on strength or dex with pyro, and I created a Merl Highchurch cosplay running pure faith (no summons). For the first time in years, I burned all three of my free pine resins without ending the gargoyles life, and i'm so happy that this game still has insane challenges for me after all these years. Considering grinding out the three extra levels I need to grab some sunbro miracles so I can stop chipping away with my shitty mace, but just wanted to share my appreciation with yall.

The genius of Dark Souls's design

    Posted: 14 Nov 2019 02:24 AM PST

I responded in another about the crystal cave invisible bridge and it made me (again) appreciate the brilliant design this game have.

At first several areas/traps/moments can looked unfair. But when you pay attention to the world surrounding you, you will often find help/solution. Here some examples :

    • The "crystal snowflakes" falling in the Crystal cave help you to find your way on the invisible paths. If they crush on the ground, it's safe !
    • The Ring of the Evil eye (30 hp healed/kill) doesn't look so useful since 30 HP is nothing. But it's placed in the Depth, just before Blightown and its poisonous swamp with an (almost)infinite amount of weak ennemies to kill (mosquitoes). This ring basically completely nullify the poison of the swamp.
    • The first mimic (in Sen's) seems pretty unfair. But again if you had some patience and some good observation skill you can avoid it. The chain on the side is different from a normal chest and if you wait a bit you can see the mimic breathing a bit.
    • Just after this mimic, there is the trapped elevator... litteraly covered with blood... It a sign of danger !
    • Again in Sen's Forteress, you can see the burned area outside before the giant start to throw some bombs at you...
    • An obvious example is the transient curse just at the beginning of New Londo...
    • The armored boar can be a massive obstacle early game. "Ho ! What is this skull item which can attract enemy that I find just next to him and above a fire?"
    • Quick EDIT : The fact that you can choose the Black Fire bomb as a starting item which are extremely powerful to defeat the Asylum Demon on your first encounter to get you his weapon.

Do you have other examples ? Which design choice do you find really clever ?

EDIT : Horrible grammar mistake in the title... Sadness ahead

    Do people still play ds1?

    Posted: 13 Nov 2019 11:37 PM PST

Not the remaster but the original. I've been playing it on Xbox one and a friend of mine is interested in playing with me. It will be his first playthrough so I was wondering how many invaders he should expect and how much help he will be able to find.

    Advice (no cheese) for Artorias?

He's a knight that deserves a real, true battle, which is why I don't want any cheese tactics. So. What advice would you all give on how to beat him? My highest weapon is Zwei+15, and I'm a Strength/Dex build. What armor, other(faster) weapon(s), etc would be a good setup for him?

    My Fair Lady (OC)

    Posted: 13 Nov 2019 09:58 PM PST

My Fair Lady, as you stand before me, hair like silver, crystalline eyes.

Through all my blood shed, all my fighting, and all my lies.

Peering into my soul, blind eyes see all.

You have halted my progress and yet I stand tall.

Before you, I am humbled to my knees.

Your fingers run through my blood-clotted hair like the breeze.

My Fair Lady, how may I serve you?

If it will appease you, I shall slay all.

If any encroach your domain, they shall fall.

Voice like an angel and skin just as soft.

As I stand by you, I feel my soul aloft.

My Fair Lady, it is time for me to depart.

Our time together I cherish, as a work of art.

My soul calls me onward into the dark depths of this place.

I hope your light shall remain by my side through all I face.

My Fair Lady, I shall never forget you for the rest of my life.

You soothed me through all my pain, and all my strife.

    My Fair Lady, farewell.

Anyone else missed the ladder by Pinwheel on their first run?

    Posted: 13 Nov 2019 07:31 AM PST

The ladder that takes you to the Tomb of The Giants if title isn't clear enough. I remember killing Pinwheel then thought the catacombs was a dead end so I boned back to Firelink Shrine. I felt so silly after I learned there was a fucking ladder in the boss room.

    Early game trade (remaster ps4)

    Posted: 14 Nov 2019 03:18 AM PST

Hey yall, I'm back. A couple days ago I asked if anyone could give my very early game character (Undead Parish) a Greatsword (weapon not weapon class) and offered measely rewards. I tried again to get it to drop from the berenike knight (hammer guy in church) to no avail, but I managed to get a Balder Side Sword to drop pretty easily. So my question is, is anyone up for a trade? Greatsword for Balder Swag Sword?

Tldr; gimme the Greatsword and I'll give you the BSS :) message for username/where to find my summon sign.

Some thoughts on Seath, dragon scales and the primordial crystal

    Posted: 13 Nov 2019 04:44 AM PST

I've been thinking a lot about the primordial crystal, dragon scales, and why exactly Seath was so obsessed with the latter despite him possessing the former. Surely if you have access to a form of immortality nobody knows about except you, you wouldn't treat a backup option as your number 1 priority for countless centuries, especially when you have seen firsthand evidence that the scales aren't even foolproof themselves? So I think I've come to a conclusion about the overall nature of the crystal and scales that I don't think the community has really explored, although someone feel free to correct me if this is all stuff people have come up with before or if it's nonsense.

So my theory relies on this premise: "immortality" as a concept can mean more than one thing. My argument is that the primordial crystal and dragon scales do indeed mean different things when they are described as producing immortality. We see firsthand evidence of what the crystal does, it makes its user impervious to being harmed by outside forces. Nothing we can do to Seath before destroying it, no matter how powerful or damaging, will leave a scratch on him until his primordial crystal is destroyed. This includes extremely powerful spells such as Sunlight Spear that appear capable of damaging dragons in the opening cinematic. Granted, it could just be that even at your absolute peak, you still aren't capable of reaching a threshold of power capable of overcoming dragon immortality and Gwyn was, but I think that assuming there's just nothing that can overpower the protection of the crystal is more plausible. After all, it's immortality, not near-immortality that it's said to provide.

But what about the dragon scales? We see from the things Gwyn, the Witch and Nito did to the dragons that their scales absolutely do not provide total immortality in the way I described above. And it doesn't even have to be a particularly powerful attack that hurts them. As difficult as it can be, you can kill Kalameet and Midir, two scaled dragons, with chip damage. Have the legendary dragon scales of immortality somehow degraded over time? Are Kalameet and Midir somehow mortal exceptions to the rule? I don't think so, Midir is explicitly described as having "immortality" and Kalameet is treated with far more fear in the lore than degraded monsters like the Gaping Dragon. What I think is that while Dragon scales are certainly formidable, their real quality of immortality isn't that they provide invulnerability like the crystal, but that they provide immortality in the sense of being ageless. Immunity to entropy, senescence, ageing, all the many words for the natural degradation of your body and mind over time. This property might be what makes the dragons earn their "everlasting" title. Without outside interference, a dragon kept confined within its scales will never age or change or degrade, it will last forever as itself.

Keeping this in mind, it suddenly makes sense why the everlasting dragons would bother to have created or maintained a backup plan like the primordial crystal in the first place. The two forms of immortality combined make you effectively incapable of ever being harmed or suffering, provided you can keep one of them away from your enemies. You just have to watch out for problem dragons, such as ones who are born without scales and will eventually age, who are resentful enough to cut off everyone except themselves from a crystal and destroy any remaining ones, allowing those rebellious lords to rise up and finally kill you. Most of you will die, some will run like Kalameet or be pressed into service like Midir, and some might survive but have their scales broken, degrading over time or producing degraded descendants, which may be the source of beings like the undead and gaping dragon, or maybe the less intelligent and formidable wyverns and drakes.

This theory might seem a bit pointless, but I think that if true it provides a much better explanation for Seath's character and actions than "he's crazy" does. Why is he near-sighted and mad by the time you meet him in the first game? He's been around for a long time and blindness and dementia have taken their toll on him. Why did he devote so much time and effort towards seeking to produce another kind of immortality? His current method of immortality was flawed, and was failing to make him truly everlasting. Why was he resentful enough to destroy his entire race despite being immortal like them? He was envious of their ability to exist as themselves forever, while he was doomed to grow more feeble and possibly die. How was he able to produce a pile of dragon corpses in the opening despite being a total pushover compared to the other dragons we face? As the sole user of the crystal, only he had invulnerability, absolutely nothing they did to him would have stopped him. He may even have been more powerful at that time, as it was in his youth relative to when we meet him.

This display of power might also have been why Gwyn remained loyal to Seath despite his habit of kidnapping and abusing people across Lordran, possibly including members of the royal family. Gwyn would have seen what Seath was capable of in the war and known that he was untouchable in a way other dragons weren't. Trying to keep the truly invulnerable dragon on your side, even when he causes so much trouble, would probably be seen as a necessary sacrifice for a leader who was always willing to let the ends justify the means. He was likely aware of the primordial crystal to some extent, but when the entire dragon race couldn't find it, it seems foolish to try and find it yourself and risk Seath's wrath.

Overall, I think the idea that Seath has aged and degraded from his peak fits in well with the themes of the game and the other lord bosses you face. He's the only lord that, at first glance, hasn't fallen from grace, given that it seems like he was pretty nasty from day 1. But by his own definition of grace, being him at his top mental and physical state and the pinnacle of all dragons, he would have aged and grown ever less able to finish his attempt at becoming fully immortal. Even if he did somehow manage to finally find his answer by the time of Dark Souls, the damage to his body and psyche has already been done, and he likely would have sunk further and further into his obsession, maybe finding ways to delay it, but never stopping his inevitable decline to his end. Perhaps deep down he knew what was coming, and Priscilla (if she is his daughter) and the Pisacas were attempts at leaving a legacy. He seems to have managed to perpetuate himself into the futures of DS2 and 3 to some extent, with the Old Paledrake Soul and corruption of Oceiros, but who knows if any of this was part of any of his plans to keep going forever, or just a fortunate coincidence for him. Seath seems like the kind of dragon that just wants to keep himself going forever rather than having his name remembered and revered, so I imagine that he didn't really care about Priscilla, but Freja and Oceiros probably resemble a happy future of some kind for him, even if they weren't planned to turn out the way they did.

I really hope that this isn't me treading ground that other people have before, I looked to see if these ideas were explored in the past and couldn't find anything, but there's a lot to dig through in six years of speculation. I hope that people find the theory interesting at least, even if they don't agree with any of it. I'm more than open to any criticism or counter points, so please, don't hold back if you notice any flaws or mistakes, I really enjoyed thinking this out and would be more than happy to ponder it some more.
