    Lovecraft in Dark souls

    Posted: 12 Oct 2019 04:40 PM PDT

Everyone talks about all of the Lovecraft inspiration in Bloodborne, but I've yet to see anyone talking about the numerous references in Dark souls. While it's not one of his more well-known stories, The Dream Quest of Unknown Kadath is quite clearly the inspiration for Anor Londo (an abandoned city of the gods, only accessible by being carried in by the Night Gaunts.) Maybe this is old news, but I haven't seen much talk on the subject. Has anyone found any other obscure references or the like?

    I've seen things....(first time blightown)

    Posted: 13 Oct 2019 12:50 AM PDT

Alright, so correct me if I'm wrong but there are two bonfires in blighttown. The one on the bridge and the one at the bottom. When I experienced blighttown for the first time, I wasn't even aware of the one at the bottom at which you're supposed to respawn upon being killed by Quellag. Meaning everytime the spider lady killed me, I had to descend the whole thing again. I just wanted to know if anyone else went through the hellhole that is blighttown in this way and if not....Take a moment to think about how the sunshine on my face felt rewarding once I got out.

    To the Friendly Invader...

    Posted: 12 Oct 2019 01:39 PM PDT

The Humongous, dressed as Executioner Smough, if you happen upon this. Thank you, for not killing me right off the bat near the second Demon Ruins bonfire in Izalith. Thank you for dropping humanity to further kindle my flame, for guiding me to the Ember and dropping all those crafting materials behind the worms.

As a newly undead, this was my first encounter with a player that didn't end in what little I had being taken, and I'll do what I can to pay it forward in the future.

I'm off to fight the Firesage Demon now.

    Praise the sun. ☀️

(I hope you got a laugh when I walked off the edge, got a phone call and looked away for just a second to answer. Tsk tsk..)

Lautrec and Gundyr are the same person

    Posted: 12 Oct 2019 03:00 PM PDT

I want to present to you my theory as to why Lautrec from DS1 and Gundyr from DS3 are indeed the same character.

    The Theory

Gundyr is either an incarnation of or Lautrec himself after the undefined length of time passed between DS1 and DS3. We know that Gundyr awoke as Unkindled Ash, same as the player character, yet he cannot continue his mission because his Fire Keeper was dead. We don't know who killed her and there is nothing that would contradict with Gundyr killing her himself. Lautrec had a habit of killing Fire Keepers and collecting their souls, so it wouldn't be surprising if he kept doing it after awaking as Gundyr in Lothric.

    The Armor

I will start with this argument since it's pretty thin. Nontheless we can see a few similarties between the 2 armor sets worn by their respective characters. https://imgur.com/AtJ0Str There's the crown-like shape at the top of the helmet, the abdominal muscle plates and the skirt-like material on both of them.

    "Champion"

Lautrec refers to himself as a "Champion of his Goddess", likewise Gundyr is named "Champion Gundyr" in his form in Untended Graves.

    The Coiled Sword

This has nothing to do with Lautrec, but with the theory that it was Gundyr who killed his own Fire Keeper. After we get the Coiled Sword Fragment from beating Iudex Gundyr, we place it back where it belongs inside Firelink Shrine. Which means that someone must've taken it from there and stab Gundyr with it. I would argue that Gundyr killed the Fire Keeper and took the Coiled Sword, only to realize that he is forever doomed and cannot escape that place until he impales himself with it, which, from the position and angle we find the sword inside his body, would fit perfectly.

    The Prison

The first time we find Lautrec in DS1, he is imprisoned in the Undead Church. We also get the Prisoner's Chain from transposing Gundyr's Soul which reads "A prisoner is one who has staked everything on a belief, a proclivity most apparent in the greatest of champions."

"Belief" can be interpreted as a very religious term, Lautrec was a very religious man who acted in the name of his Goddess.

    Arguments against the theory

Both of them imply very different fighting styles and carry completely different weaponry, no connection there.

You also get the Ring of Favor from Sulyvahn's Beasts in Anor Londo in DS3, which would imply that Lautrec canonically died when we invaded him in DS1.

Let me know what you think of my theory.

Small detail I noticed in Anor Londo just now.

    Posted: 12 Oct 2019 12:01 PM PDT

In the O&S boss room, once you defeat them two elevators are revealed. One is noticeably larger than the other too. I believe the large elevator was meant for Smough due to it's size and the smaller one is perfect for Orenstein and smaller. Just something I thought I'd share with you guys and leave your take on the elevator sizes in the comments. Praise the Sun!

Anyone else think this game has some of the best sword 'n' board in a video game ever?

    Posted: 12 Oct 2019 10:35 AM PDT

Like seriously. It's not the deepest combat system with unlockable systems and styles and all that but it's so satisfying! There's a few simple mechanics (backstab, parry + riposte, twohanding, light vs. heavy attacks, poise) that come together to make a very satisfying system that no other swordfighting game, for me at least, has been able to handle to this degree. Of course there's a degree of clunk in this system because it was made about 8 years ago but it holds up surprisingly well! It encourages the patient and slow combat that similar games like Skyrim could never handle.

Is the online portion of the remastered dead on PS4?

    Posted: 13 Oct 2019 12:22 AM PDT

I bought the game 2 weeks ago and have since put 105 hours on my character but only like 3 of those hours were spent playing with other players. Are the people still playing so few or is it something wrong with my game? Maybe I'm just used to DS3 where you could find 10+ summon signs before every fog wall.

Something in Ash Lake that is not an Arch Tree...maybe

    Posted: 12 Oct 2019 04:56 PM PDT

I'm running through Ash Lake for who knows how many times and as I am enjoying the view I noticed something weird in the background of Ash Lake. I do not have a screenshot of it available yet, but it really isn't all that hard to spot.

If you approach the main bonfire after exiting the Arch Tree coming down the long branch to the beach, go straight up to the bonfire. Then turn slightly to your right, less than 45 degree angle. It's easier to notice with a monocle, but if you scan the horizon line you will see what doesn't look at all like an Arch Tree. But instead looks like a symmetrical building with two buildings / arch trees ascending parallel to it. It's a bit hard to spot, and honestly you can mistake it for an Arch Tree on your first view, but looking closer it definitely doesn't look natural. It can be spotted in the second layer of trees.

Now to me it looks either like a building, or just an artist that didn't spend enough time on this one particular spot, since the entirety of the background is reused and you can find copy pasted parts easily. Though this one section having this visual anomaly when every other part of the background looks convincing enough is weird. I'll try to get a screenshot off my PS4 and uploaded. It's not really important, but I thought it was an interesting little piece of visual noise.

    EDIT: Images

Also note-worthy that this is the the remastered version.

    Why I Hate Poise

    Posted: 13 Oct 2019 03:08 AM PDT

I was playing DS1 yesterday and I tought it would be nice to play with Chester outfit so I decided to go to Oolacile earlier so I went there as soon as I got lordvessel . I was wearing Shiva outfit until that point and I had to kill Sanctuary Guardian my damage was very good I was playing with 15+ halberd with a quality build but when I was fighting it, it was so fast that it made my character look like a shit, I couldnt even touched it until my estus numbers halved so I decided to equip havel set and oh boy! I didn't even needed to roll or use a shield it became one of the easiest bosses in the game and this set is very accessible to all players you only have to kill havel to get ring and find his set in anor londo. One of the enjoyable fights in the game turned into a joke when I wore that I wasn't even flinching when it was hitting me. I'm very happy that other games dont have this kind of thing. I can say that I can do a SL1 run with little to no worries in this game.

    Dragonslayer Spear (Dark Souls remastered)

    Posted: 12 Oct 2019 11:08 PM PDT

So I have just beaten the Ornstein and Smough fight and I received the Soul of Ornstein. I know you can get the Dragonslayer spear by ascending a +10 spear or something with the soul. But is the Dragonslayer spear worth all of this?

Remastered - Reduce weapon level through Frampt?

    Posted: 12 Oct 2019 09:37 PM PDT

I have been trying to keep my SL low so that I can play PVP easily. I accidentally picked up the Lightning Spear in the Sen's Fortress. I read from internet that owning this weapon means the weapon level will be automatically +10. I do find that I have less chance to matchmaking... Then I think of surrendering the Lightning Spear to Frampt. Will this reduce my weapon level?
