NG++ Fun: Messing around with the storyline and characters, testing the AI and environment, becoming creative with the mechanics and boss kills, etc

    Posted: 11 Oct 2019 06:16 PM PDT

Currently on NG++ on the road for the Knight's Honor Achievement, and it is an absolute blast so far. Generally, one would naturally assume that it would become boring playing the same game on a new cycle. But it really is a New Game so to speak.

At this point, around level 180, many aspects of the character are (almost) completed and/or maxed out: all equipment, rings, weapons, pyromancies, sorceries, miracles, etc. so it really leaves the room for pushing the game design to its limits. Of course, the thrill is that the game still remains unforgiving, and so you could die at any second with one wrong move.

Some interesting (offline) things that may or may not be common knowledge:

    • NPC Summons: You can drag your summoned NPCs Solaire and Lautrec backwards through the Undead Parish towards the Undead Burg to help you fight the Hellkite Drake on the bridge. (The more aggressive Hellkite Drake was by far the toughest melee fight on NG+, and no other enemy or boss even came close.) The summoned Solaire can even be made to stand in regular spot to gaze at the sun. In the same vein, summoned Beatrice can help you clear out (read: Titanite Slab farming) the Darkwraiths in New Londo, and summoned Tarkus can assist you to conquer the four Titanite Demons in Sen's Fortress. You can re-summon these NPCs again and again at full health by quitting and reloading (without leaving the area or resting at the bonfire). You can also do this on NG but, since their summon signs are very close to the boss fog gate, you would have the survive the run there, which is easier on NG+.

    • Alternative Boss Order: Sif can become your very first boss fight (after the Asylum Demon), and the Four Kings can become your second boss fight. You could pursue this route on NG but it is probably more difficult. Also there is some novelty in killing a boss with a weapon made from their own soul.

    • Spectator Sport: use a combination of Fog Ring, Slumbering Dragoncrest Ring and Undead Rapport to sneak up on various undead enemies and control them, that is, order them to wreck their buddies. Without the increased damage output, just one of the regular hollow soldiers outside of the Undead Parish absolutely demolished the Berenike Knight on NG+. This time I want to set up a bout between Dropkick Andre and the Berenike Knight. Also return to Anor Londo in glorious in style - equip the Fog Ring and Hawk Ring, and the dragonslayer greatbow (c.f. Skyrim sneaky archer) and gun down those silver knights...sweet revenge.

    • Chameleon Trolling: the AI can have a pretty wild response to the Chameleon sorcery, so it is fun to see what the game developers have programmed. Havel gets confused by a wooden barrel, inching your way through the Demon Ruins/Lost Izalith disguised as a Stone Demon. It is a shame that bosses can generally see through this Oolacile gimmick.

    • Avoiding Sin: At high levels, the sin absolution costs become very high. If you don't want sins for killing certain NPCs at Firelink Shrine, you can "invite" (long range aggro) the hollows or skeletons to do your dirty work for you. Just place your target between yourself and the enemy and you can witness the murder without committing a sin. (This one is for Petrus or Reah.)

    • Shortcuts: at this point, the character has enough health, fall control sorcery and/or offensive/defence for the riskier and more interesting shortcuts that you could not try before. Example: the two jumps from the (upper) Undead Burg down to the Lower Undead Burg. Of course, always have some homeward bones or the homeward miracle on hand in case you get stuck in the scenery or find yourself in a gamebreaking situation.

    • Micro-Transactions: well known but worth mentioning, if you have 100,000 or so souls lying around (something you can easily accumulate in a few minutes farming the Phalanx in the Painted World in NG+), you can effectively buy yourself a highly desired red titanite slab. Trade an ascended pyromancy glove with Snuggly, and avoid the hassle of running through the eyesore that is Lost Izalith, farming the Chaos Eaters for this Bass Cannon optimizer.

There are many more things but perhaps I will update them later if anyone is interested. How have you all found NG+ and beyond? Any interesting strategies you tried or strange anecdotes you experienced or bizzare situations concocted with your new found powers from the first run?

Edit: as this post got some attention, I will add a few more noteworthy things:

    • First Boss: adding onto the alternative boss order point above, you are actually spoiled for choice for your first bosses; here are your options if your feeling brave.

-Taurus Demon: the usual first boss.

-Capra Demon: can chain into the Gaping Dragon for your second boss.

-Quelaag: can chain into Ceaseless Discharge for your second boss.

-Sif: can chain into the Four Kings as your second boss.

-Pinwheel: Catacombs shortcuts, and you can get Leroy to clear out the bonewheels beforehand through multiple summons.

-Stray Demon: for those exceptionally brave few who did not get enough of the Undead Asylum.

    • Wrong Way: so you can venture through some of the areas in the reverse direction, starting at the end. The main examples are: The Undead Burg/Parish, Blighttown, Darkroot Basin, Demon Ruins, Lost Izalith, but others are possible with the nifty shortcuts. And this is particularly fun the stealth pranks as the enemies will be facing away and you will not be in their line of sight for aggroing them.

    • Misdirection Aural Decoy and Alluring Skulls also provide some entertainment with the enemy AI, and you can use these techniques to guide undead towards other enemies before using Undead Rapport. Usually the AI battle royale makes for quite a spectacle.

    • Life Insurance: you can really stack up on Rings of Sacrifice (the normal and rare varieties). In NG+ and beyond, you will be running around with heaps of souls, millions at time even; the days of dropping 10k souls and being distraught are long gone. So you must protect yourself in case you die with such a vast fortune...and you will die given all the experimentation you will be doing. So you can put these rings on AFTER you die, and then you can safely trek back to your bloodstain without worrying about a second death.

    • Mini Games: so the Fall Control sorcery turns the Great Hollow into a platformer, so you can enjoy the journey down to the Ash Lake or take up Crystal Lizard hunting.

    • Sniping: the Hawk Ring and the Black Bow of Pharis make a deadly pair for testing the enemy aggro range. Throw in the Ring of Fog as well as Power Within/Sanctus or Red Tearstone Ring, and you have a "one-man army Legolas" PvE build. This is useful if you want to farm the Moonlight Butterflies in the Crystal Cave for Blue Titanite Slabs.

    • Sightseeing: forget the Speed Run/Cheese strats and slow down to smell the roses. If you really want to see how much effort the developers have put into the game map, then take out your binoculars and gaze at the scenery. You can see Blighttown and the Great Hollow, as well as the Duke's Archives from Firelink Shrine, you can see Ash Lake from the Tomb of Giants, etc.

Sif's alternative cutscene is the actual canon one

    Posted: 11 Oct 2019 04:56 AM PDT

The atlernative cutscene that is played when you first encounter Sif after you did the DLC should be considered canon instead of the original one.

If you didn't defeat Manus before you meet Sif, you get the original cutscene with Sif not recognizing you. But the Chosen Undead did canonically defeat Manus and the Abyss regardless of the order in the game since you travel back in time. Sif would always have to recognize you regardless of the point in time you time travel since your arrival in the past will always be the past. Even if you don't do the DLC, it still was you who did it since otherwise Sif wouldn't be in Darkroot Garden to begin with, Darkroot Garden might not even exist as it does.

    Just a shower thought.

Miyazaki and Yoko Taro are rivals in who is the biggest fan of Ueda-san. New Miyazaki interview at BGS!

    Posted: 11 Oct 2019 01:00 PM PDT

    New interview with Miyazaki-san!

Ps. It's a machine translation revised by me, later I'll try to revise again. I hope you enjoy. And don't forget to give a click for the guys who did the interview.

    https://www.uol.com.br/start/ultimas-noticias/2019/10/11/start-bgs-entrevista-hidetaka-miyazaki-dark-souls.htm

Start: Which part do you like most about working on a game?

Miyazaki: Maybe what I like most is when a problem is solved with some ideas. I will give an example: In "Bloodborne", some weapons have multiple functions. This happened because, at development time, I was thinking of a way to show the weapon being used in different ways, and I also thought of fighting styles that could change in the game. Then, came up with this "idea" of having two modes working for the same weapon. This was connected with the technology we had at that specific time and also allowed new ways to play the game. So this part of overcoming problems with new ideas is what I like most about game development.

START: Your games have a reputation for being hard. But often people just talk about it and forget the other characteristics that make them good beyond the difficulty. Are you upset about this?

Miyazaki: I don't get so much upset about this. Not that I wanted to make a very hard game, and it was like that. The goal I always have is to give the player the feeling of achievement, give that feeling of having done and managed to win the challenge. It is this feeling that I want to experience in games, and perhaps it can be reflected in some difficulty. Still, when I read the opinion of the people who played it, it seems that what we wanted to get through with the game was reached, even though they say it was hard. So I don't get upset.

START: You've already revealed that ICO was the game that made you want to make games. Do you ever intend to work with Fumito Ueda? Or have you ever talked to him about it?

Miyazaki: I love ICO. Not only ICO, but I'm a big fan of Ueda-san's other games and have personal contact with him. I have a lot of respect, and we are friends. But when it comes to creating games together, I don't think it will ever happen, because to develop a game, it's better to have just one director. So the game is first developed with the director's creative vision. I have my vision, and Ueda-San has his. Probably if we happen to work together, I wouldn't be in the position of director. If Ueda-san were in the leading role, showing his vision, I would be working more on the technical, the planning side. But what I want right now is not that. Also, I believe that making a game with two directors requires two people with very close ideas, and I don't think we both have that. So I guess the result would not be good. That said, if I were to work in a more technical part, surely Ueda-san would be on the list of people I would like to work with.

START: Demon's Souls was not released in the West until nine months after arriving in Japan. Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida has said he regretted not believing the game so much at the time. Has he ever apologized to you for this?

Miyazaki: Yoshida-san is a sincere and straightforward person, so he talks about what he really felt (at the time of Demon's Souls), and it seems to me that he's been playing and having a lot of fun with my games after that. And in the end, I believe this was an episode that was good to have happened.

START: But did Shuhei Yoshida ever apologize personally?

    Miyazaki: No.

START: And why do you think that was good?

Miyazaki: I think that from my current perspective. If Demon's Souls had been sold well at release time, it might not have had many repercussions after that. But we don't know what could have happened. In the end, the Demon's Souls gained good reviews, and this eventually linked with the development of Dark Souls and after Bloodborne. So, in the end, it wasn't an event that got in the way.

START: You are part of a new generation of Japanese game creators. Besides, you can also cite Yoko Taro as another name that has gained relevance in recent years. What do you think about this generation?

Miyazaki: I have a curiosity about Yoko Taro because he likes a lot of Fumito Ueda-san, and we are rivals in this subject. I want to be more fan of Ueda-san than he is, and I don't give up on that (laughs).

START: You have a degree in Social Sciences. How much of this learning did you use in your works? Is the online aspect of Dark Souls, where players leave messages, a reflection of this lineup, for example?

Miyazaki: I think so, it had an influence, especially on networking and communication. My background also influenced me in the worldview, which I think has a particular characteristic from other creators. Bloodborne itself is what, inside of me, reflects a lot what I learned as a student. There may be people who say, "Oh, wow, don't talk bullshit, how did you use Social Science on Bloodborne?" But that's the truth.

START: Your games cause a lot of fear and even frustration in games. So I ask you, what is your biggest fear and frustration for you?

Miyazaki: That's a pretty tough question ... I think human evil is what I'm most afraid of. About the frustration, I've never felt so frustrated in my life, but it has a personal history of when I played volleyball in the gym. I have always played at clubs there in Japan, but in the second year of high school, I suffered a leg fracture and could no longer participate in the competitions of the last year, nor practice volleyball itself. I think this moment was the most frustrating of all for me. To this day, I still have a little difficulty in my left leg, which is where I fractured.

START: How Elden Ring, your next game, was collaborated by G.R.R. Martin, does that mean there will be references to Game of Thrones in the game?

Miyazaki: Since our first conversation, the intention was never to create references or anything already done by him, such as references from Game of Thrones or other of his works. So what we wanted was to do something completely new. So we don't think about easter eggs.

START: Finally, what caught your attention most in Brazil?

Miyazaki: What I know until now is that a place really far from Japan (laughs). Actually, this trip is the first time I come to Brazil, and I won't stay long, but I would like to see it a lot. And now it's my turn to ask: what's interesting here in Brazil?

START: Hmm ... I think the cultural and folklore aspects here are interesting. They reflect on the country's artistic productions, even in the games created here. I think it's the same way it happens in Japan.

Miyazaki: Really, in this part, I agree because it's not something that reaches Japan. I don't know anything about Brazilian legends or mythologies.

I killed Ornstein and Smough with a bunch of restrictions (and it took lots of practice)

    Posted: 12 Oct 2019 03:56 AM PDT

Ive been doing challenge runs for quite a while now, and a few months ago finished killing every boss at sl1 ng+6 no roll/block/parry with no red tearstone ring, and also killing every boss sl1 ng+6 without sprinting/rolling/blocking/parrying. In the later run I used rtsr for some kills, and Smough and Ornstein was one of the fights that I thought I could do without rings.

So after practicing a bit, here is Smough and Ornstein killed at SL1, NG+6 no sprint/roll/block without rings or buffs

Estus Skip Explained: What is it and how does it work?

    Posted: 11 Oct 2019 02:09 PM PDT

I've wanted to try my hand at making an explanation video where I explain some esoteric technical part of Dark Souls. I saw a comment on /r/darksouls a little while ago where a new player accidentally did Estus Skip, which lets you leave the Asylum without ever talking to Oscar. Not the type of thing that anyone generally does on purpose, of course! So what better to look into than something that could confuse new and experienced players alike?

It seems so odd that reloading the game at the wrong time can cause something like this; I hope the video can explain what's going on behind the scenes and maybe you'll also learn a little bit about how FROM made Dark Souls actually function.

My quest has ended. Rest in cinders now

    Posted: 11 Oct 2019 11:26 AM PDT

After quite a while, a have finally managed to defeat Gwynn for the first time. I couldn't master the parrying, so i had to do it the hard way. React, and drink 20 estus flasks. After a while i noticed a pattern, if he failed to grab or kick you, he's defenceless for a few seconds.

Regardless, it's been a while a game has ever made me feel such relief. That feeling of 'its finally over'. And man, has it been a journey.

In return, also thanks to this community for giving me advice and tips along the way.

    Something about Izalith I’ve noticed

    Posted: 11 Oct 2019 04:29 PM PDT

I think the Witch of Izalith is actually sitting on a throne, and the daughters are protecting the soul of the witch, which has become the seedbed. I'm not sure if it's been noticed or mentioned.

*I always assumed she was bound or the daughters were keeping her contained, never knew she was just sitting pretty like a true monarch

Playing this game for the second time I’m honestly not sure how I ever would have completed it without guides.

    Posted: 11 Oct 2019 07:19 PM PDT

Maybe I'm just really bad at video games that require exploration, but I'm on my second playthrough and decided to try and go off memory. I got farther than I thought I would but then I got to the part where I needed to ring the second bell and I had no idea where to go. I knew I needed to go to blighttown but I had no idea how to get there.

I honestly can't even imagine what it was like to play this game when it first came out, with no guides or wiki's to tell you what to do. I try to not use it much but I feel like every place I go to I'm like that Gandalf meme.

"I have no memory of this place".

What is the best Lord Soul to go after first?

    Posted: 12 Oct 2019 01:44 AM PDT

    Ornstein and Smough ruined me.

    Posted: 11 Oct 2019 08:55 PM PDT

All bosses prior to O&S - 1 death total.

I'm walking through this game like I can't believe people used to say this was hard. Why did I find this so hard when I played it back in the day? Bloodborn and DS3 make these boss fights look like normal NPC's.

... and then I swear I could hear "I'm about to ruin this mans whole run" as I passed the fogwall.

Everything in this fight is so much harder! The music is hyper loud and intense, the cinematic makes them look 20 feet tall, Smough literally shakes the screen and throws debris around so much that you can hardly see sometimes, the camera actively tries to obscure your vision, Ornstein I am pretty sure haxx0rs through pillars with his charge and then in stage 2 suddenly you find out your weapon does the wrong type of damage to the boss or is generally ineffective.

    I hate it!

and I wish every boss was like that.

Are there 2 halves to this game? Baby bosses and then big boy bosses? Is O&E basically a skillgate?

What's the best actual way to beat O&S? I essentially tried to brute force it but I feel like it's just a roll-a-thon if you want to be classy.

A Game About Gwyn's Four Knights.

    Posted: 11 Oct 2019 08:53 AM PDT

I feel like there should be a Dark Souls game solely revolving around Gwyn's four knights specifically Artorias and his journey to corruption. And maybe we can learn more about the other 3 knights, like how Ornstein and Gough were in the battle field. Or how Ciaran assassinated her victims, and we can play as all four of them in certain parts of the story. I just feel like this would be a good idea.

finished dark souls 1 after completing dark souls 3 and bloodborne. best game i have ever played

    Posted: 11 Oct 2019 12:59 PM PDT

just finished dark souls 1 today, and i am going have to say that this is the best soulsborne game (not sure how popular of an opinion that is nowadays). anyways here are my thoughts on the game.

    • combat - while i think the fast and fluid is better in dark souls 3 and bloodborne, i still really enjoyed the combat of dark souls. its slow, methodical and feels more grounded then dark souls 3. i also experimented with sorcery and i have to say its a lot more powerful than dark souls 3 sorcery (though i haven't done miracles and pyromancy yet).

    • world - i love the world of dark souls more than souls 3 and bloodborne. its more interconnected, the elevator from undead parish to firelink is a classic example. the world is connected in a way that it makes sense. the lower part of lordran is creepy and mysterious with areas like, the abyss, demon ruins, lost izalith, tomb of the giants, lake etc. the middle is the world of men, this where we traverse through ruined towns, a church and a forest. high above is the majestic place of anor londo an the cleanest place in lordran, almost as if it has been untouched. on top of that the lack of warping in the first half of the game makes shortcuts more useful and by the time you get warping it feels like a reward.

    • lore - i honestly think the lore in this game is the best. characters like Gwyn, the witch of izalith and her daughters, seath, havel, pinwheel etc. i was more intrigued by these characters than most in dark souls 3 or bloodborne. my favorite piece of lore in the series is the story of artorias and sif. theres more to the lore i wanna talk about it but since theres so much more to the lore of dark souls i will just stop here.

    • bosses - while the bosses in souls 3 and bloodborne are better i think the bosses in this game are still good. ornstien and smough, sif, gwyn and the dlc bosses are definitely the stand outs for me and i think for most of them it wasn't just the fight itself, but the theme and lore behind them that made really great. as for the other bosses, while the designs impressed the fights themselves didn't. ceaseless discharge can be cheese (although its probably intended), the demon firesage was just a re skin of the stray demon. centipede demon has you fighting in a really tiny arena (there is bigger one but you have to go through the lava), pinwheel is the easiest boss ever and the skeletons in nitos boss fight are more threatening than nito himself. of course bed of chaos needs no introduction.

    • some other thoughts
    1. lost izalith and demon ruins are really cool aesthetically and the demons in this game are just cool, but the leven design are some of the worst in the game.
    2. the atmosphere in this game (and the series) is one of the best. very dark and gritty and the lack of music in most parts of the game really support that.
    3. the NPCS are the best in the series. very iconic
    4. dukes archives, catacombs, tomb of the giants are good areas.
    5. kiln of the first flame is a great final area and is one of the most underrated aesthetically
    6. the art direction in this game is incredible

so these are my thoughts on dark souls. overall the worldbuilding, lore, atmosphere, secrets puts this game on my list as the best soulsborne game and definitely the best game i have ever played.

    stuck on ornstein and smough

    Posted: 11 Oct 2019 09:28 PM PDT

so ive been stuck at this boss for a while. 1st playthrough

    my build is: lv68, 22vit, 28 end, 28 str, 23 dex, 23 res

    eastern armor lv 4

lightning iron shield +1 lightning urgenta +1 lightning zweihandler +2

i intend on sticking with eastern armor and shield cause im a weeb

essentially im stuck, i just find my self spending hours grinding the silver knights to level up. i dont have any titinate chunks to level up my weapons either and cant buy them from blacksmith

    i dont want to backtrack

ppl have said something about a summon or something. i have no idea what the fuck that is

    as for the boss battle:

i cant fully block ornstein and it does damage. i waste my staimina dodging/shielding their endless barage of attacks until i start taking damaage. if i try to get some distance to heal, ornstein will just fly around the stage and him my outa nowhere. i cant shill around and fight back cause then smough will attack from behind. what am i even supposed to do
