Cale goes hollow because the world doesn't line up Posted: 01 Sep 2020 08:35 AM PDT When you first speak to him, his motives are straightforward:
Second time:
Already Cale has lost his motive (creating a map) and now is merely fond of maps. Losing one's sense of purpose is the cause of hollowing. Fourth interaction:
This is especially funny because Cale's claim is impossible: If he only found the map in the mansion after arriving in the kingdom, the map could in no wise have spurred the journey that led him to it. "Why cartography" is a good question. Are there even any other mapmakers in the series? It seems likely to me that Cale's quest is a riff on the world's discontinuity. [link] [comments] |
Arsenal of the Awful: Mail Breaker (aka Shield Puncher) Posted: 31 Aug 2020 09:30 PM PDT You may know the Mail Breaker as "that one shitty, useless weapon that Lobos Jr uses to keep track of what NG cycle he's on" or Siris' free regeneration tool in DkS3, and no one would blame you because this weapon has a history of being so redundant that at this point it's present as a joke. Well, DkS2 had a different idea and decided to give the Mail Breaker many positive qualities that no one proceeded to give a shit about because it's the Mail Breaker. But i care, and the Mail Breaker in DkS2 was gifted a fantastic 140 Counter rating, higher poise damage than other rapiers, and the highest shield pierce percentage strong attack in the game. Yeah, for those unaware, shield piercing attacks in DkS2 are super nerfed to be usually only at 50% pierce (RIP Shotel, my DkS1 noob slaying baby), but some weapons have a higher shield pierce rating. According to some wikis, the Mail Breaker is touted to have 100% shield pierce but that's a load of bullshit...though also not that far off. I decided to walk up to one of those spear turtling asshole hollow soldiers and just Mail Breaker punch its shield...1 shotting the guy. And at that moment, i got an evil grin after a "NANI?!" reaction. It has somewhere around 70-ish% shield pierce, which when considering that Rob+Flynn is a thing, sounds pretty damn abusable, especially since it is technically a rapier. Now, why the hell would anyone use the Mail Breaker over the Estoc or Spider's Silk. Well both of those have very low Counter ratings, and the Spider's Silk is a pure Dex weapon with no Strength scaling. The Mail Breaker, despite having honestly ass base damage, is a C/C Strength/Dex scaling weapon with higher shield pierce than either of the above. So, how is it, then? Well, as a main weapon it's not surprisingly complete ass since it's short and i suck at parrying to make of its rapier+Dagger crit modifier. But what i don't suck at is moveset mixups, and the Mail Breaker is actually a pretty good left hand sidearm to use in conjunction with a different, mainhand weapon. I decided to use it with a Blacksteel Katana and found that the Mail Breaker's poke is quick enough to combo into a roll catch hit after 2 katana R1s. But any other rapier can do that, so that's not special is it? Well, any other rapier can't just go up to some shield turtle's face and punch through the block because fuck physics. The short length and high counter rating actually help in this case because what happens with the Spider Silk and Estoc is that because they're so much longer, they can't combo their shield pierce easily since turtlers just move to the side and thus the length causes them to lurch you forwards too much and miss, sometimes getting you backstabbed. The Estoc in particular has a janky hitbox on its strong attack that keeps stepping you forwards and not turning, making you into prime backstab bait. The Mail Breaker ironically in its in-your-face length just punches and tracks slightly better because of it, letting you sucker punch shield strafers. Which also plays into some of the Mail Breaker's strengths. The 140 counter is surprisingly relevant because a lot of times, people mistime their own block and just swing their weapon as the Mail Breaker is wailing on them, getting counter hit for respectable damage and the slightly higher poise break helps out too. If you use a Rob+Flynn build, you'll be punching people's shields for 150-200 damage depending on their armor upgrades, which is also super useful in invasions to just slap away shield turtling summons. Really, it's a surprisingly handy sidearm since even if your opponent isn't using a shield (aka most arena players), it's a good short range, quick poke tool that can cover for a slower, longer weapon's weaknesses and pull off some slight comboing (aka add 1-2 hits quick enough to catch a roll out of your other weapon's 2 landed hits). Really, it competes with the Spider's Silk but they're both completely different in terms of stat orientation, so it's not as niche for this as you might expect. A quality build can make great use of punching through guards with the Mail Breaker while the dex builds use the string needle Spider Silk for a slightly safer but also slightly more passive equivalent. But, therein also lies the problem. The Spider's Silk is a gimmick, and a much weaker base damage version of it is also a gimmick. The Mail Breaker becomes comically weak without Rob+Flynn support to the point where other shield pierce weapons by virtue of having much higher base damage can outdo it (Silverblack Sickle in particular has a fantastic strong attack moveset that's incredible for shield piercing thanks to rotating the user with tracking to prevent backstab risk). It's also inferior to just using a regular rapier as a sidearm since rapiers are still feather light and are much longer with the same attack speed and counter rating. The Mail Breaker is thus a weapon you use if your mainhand weapon is really bad at fighting too close, which funnily enough is the inverse of using other rapiers. It's over-reliance on Rob+Flynn also hurts its ability to be used with other builds but it is still handier than one would expect. It's also mostly an invasion weapon regarding its purpose, as PvPers rarely use shields while PvErs tend to overly use them in comparison. You'll at most do some chip damage and minor combo extenders in a duel, but in an invasion you can caveman unga bunga just fist a shield and watch people die. It's not a great weapon by any means, but it does contribute to the fight nonetheless. Just don't mainhand it...only pain and wonderment of wtf you were thinking awaits if you try that without being a parry god. Plus, the Mail Breaker has a cool makeover in DkS2 having some badass spiral drill pattern for you the GIGA DRILL BREAKA those shields. It also might just be me, but i feel like the Mail Breaker is a bit faster than other rapiers to do those light combo extenders. Would make sense as its part dagger, being the lovechild of Dagger and Rapier (i know your game, you two...). Up next is...going to take a while as i have to procure this next weapon. It's a weapon infamously difficult to obtain and almost exclusively touted as not worth the effort...making it perfect for this. It's the Curved Twinblade! And i'm going to go to NG+2 on my joke, mid-SM Bleed character just to do this. But hey, i slogged through Fume Knight and Sir Alonne with that bad joke of a character so how hard can NG+ non-DLC PvE be? ...oh god, it's going to be bad, isn't it? [link] [comments] |
DS2 Easy (Cheasy) Mode -- Part 1 -- Early stages Posted: 01 Sep 2020 12:08 PM PDT You'll often hear something like, "magic is easy mode in DS2". And that's (mostly) true for an experienced player. For somebody new to the game, 30 Soul Arrows don't go all that far and without using that, well you're in street clothes, armed with a kitchen utensil and can't take a whole lot of punishment. This guide is for players who:
Also, I'd advise that you play offline if you follow this guide. While you will be over-leveled for the areas you are in, you will be under-geared for your level for some time. We'll address that long before you take on any bosses. (Loads of spoilers below) Regardless of what direction you want to take the build in eventually, start as a Sorcerer. The early game farming is much easier and even if you really prefer to just hit things once you get started, a few utility spells (say Yearn and/or Great Magic Weapon) are pretty handy. Starting gift: If you follow this guide you will end up with all of the healing items you need. I would suggest the Petrified Something. Your early goals are: Stone Ring, Vanquisher's Seal, Covetous Silver Serpent Ring +1, Fire Longsword, Great Soul Arrow, Traveling Merchant Hat, Silvercat Ring, second copy of Soul Arrow. Optionally Prisoner's Tatters. Double optionally, Warmth The order doesn't matter a great deal. (I'll present my preference) Early stat goals would be 16 ATN (3 spell slots), 10 Strength and 9 DEX (for the Fire Longsword). And some Vigor. Starting out: If you're new to the game go through the tutorial area. (No harm for experienced players as well). It emphasizes teaching you the basics of the controls. It's also a handy place to try things with enemies that are not particularly dangerous. Don't forget to light the Things Betwixt Bonfire. Trade (by selecting leave) the Petrified Something and Small Smooth and Silky Stone to the Crows. There is a jump in the second room. If you don't fell confident you can skip it. It's just some Amber Herbs. Don't be surprised if you get a gift of 200 Souls for no obvious reason. Just means an enemy you can't see has walked off a ledge. Don't worry about the statue blocking the third room. When you exit the caves and reach the sunlight search your surrounding. Before you reach the town of Majula you can pick up a Divine Blessing and off to the cliffside there is a hole in the fence that will allow you to pick up a Morning Star, Cleric's Sacred Chime and Binoculars. The last is important. There's a fair amount of loot in town. The easiest to miss is the Estus Shard in the well. (Just whack the stone on the edge of the well) Talk to Saulden. Join his covenant to get the Blue Seal ring (wear it for now. It gives you a few extra HP). Do not join the Company of Champions (yet). Talk to the Emerald Herald and get your Estus. Give her the shard you found. You also talk to her to level up, though you should not be able to level up yet. And finally: Warp back to Things Betwixt. Kill the Ogre. Note: IT can one shot you. You eleven shot it. It's still not a fair fight because if you walk past it you will notice an exit from the area -- look kind of like a cave entrance. You are perfectly safe here. You can snipe him using the binoculars or simply lock on and retreat when he starts to approach. That will get you the Stone Ring -- very useful to a caster -- and 1,000 souls. I personally level up Vigor once (after warping back to Majula) Now head to the Forest of Fallen Giants ("Do you see the way beyond the bonfire" -- Saulden). Your goal is to simply make the first bonfire. You can ignore the Ogre for now ( it just uncomplicates life if you leave it alone -- every now and then you aggro something else and that's bad news) and kill the two Hollow Soldiers between you and the bonfire. You can two shot them with your Soul Arrows. After you light the bonfire, warp back to Majula. [link] [comments] |

My number one complaint about Dark Souls 2 is that the levels are far too short Posted: 01 Sep 2020 12:11 AM PDT While visually stunning, most of the levels, even on my current and first play through, take less than an hour to complete and that's including the boss. Take Bright stone Tseldora for example, or the Iron Keep which took a grand total of a little less than an hour and two hours respectively. On a side note, it seems that one of the things that the DLCs improved on and mastered we're the lengths of the levels [link] [comments] |
Why are they called Alonne Knights? Posted: 01 Sep 2020 02:14 AM PDT I mean if that's their name why DAFUQ are there 23 just until smelter demon.... [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Sep 2020 04:31 AM PDT I am new to the ways of pvp in Dark Souls, have seen couple of fights, and funny moments. But this is the greatest thing that has happened to me, mirrored K.O. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Sep 2020 08:40 AM PDT Ok so is there anything permanent about that covenant that doesn't go away even after you've left it and gone to another or is it completely normal once you're in a different covenant [link] [comments] |
Pursuer despite floating, falls off platforms Posted: 01 Sep 2020 10:31 AM PDT In Lost Bastille's The Tower Apart battle on that chest guarded by dogs, Pursuer's dash attack might send him plummeting awkwardly and instantaneously down the water. You will get no Twinkling Titanite. Stay away from the ledge because if either one of you dies, it's always your loss. This is on SOTFS PC. I guess this is why he needs that bigass crow to fly him around. He can hover but he can't fly. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Sep 2020 01:35 PM PDT I just finished DS remastered with a str build around claymore and black knight sword, and found out that this kind of build is pretty challenging, so I wanted to try the same kind of build in Ds2. However, I don't know this game very well, so I'm here asking for recommendation of weapons I can use to achieve a similar plaustyle ( right now in playing with bastard swordxwhuch I find similar) [link] [comments] |
is the word "Bi" censored in game. Posted: 01 Sep 2020 07:29 AM PDT no real way to tell if your name is a naughty word from your own perspective. I know "bi sexual" is censored but not sure about bi alone. I am looking to make a duel wielding partizan invasion build, and am going to name him "Bi-partizan" so this a big issue. Posted: 01 Sep 2020 01:22 PM PDT I'm on ng+ and I absolutely despise him. In the base game he's relatively fine and actually quite fun, sure the hitreg is atrocious, but it really just seems like a minor inconviniences as you can push through it rather quick, but in ng+ it becomes something else, his hp DOUBLE's ftom 10000 to 20000, and his attacks deal way more damage, All and all I'd say his difficulty triples if not more due to the sheer percistance you need and I've had my weapons almost break at 1/3rd of his hp, meaning I'd need THREE OR MORE WEAPONS TO KILL HIM! And that's just the difficulty, I don't mind difficulty, but oh boy the hitreg... I can't count have many times O've stood BEHIND his paw and stil get hit, I can't count how many times he has dropped down on me and I get hit for some bullshit reason, but I've saved the best for last: when he flies in to you (or just charges at you for that matter) his attack ladts for quite a while meaning that it always counts as an attack whilst he's in his animation (wich lasts a while) you can not dodge this unless he's far away whaen he starts it so that his animation is done as you're rolling or if you try to run away, but theres the problem, HIS TRACKING IS INSANE AND HE CAN TURN HIS HEAD TO BITE YOU AFTER THE ATTACK! And yeah not only the charging, but the fireball aswell, you CAN NOT dodge roll it, you have to run, as there's no initial impact, but then there's a dilemma, how are you supposed to run away and keep track on him, figuring out if he's gonna swipe in on you or land down peacefully or if he's even going to do the fireball attack and I think we all know that running whilst locled on to someone is rather awkward. And finally: you can only hit him like once every two attacks assuming the AI doesn't go wild and flies away 20 times in a row, wich honestly just makes it a game of cat and mouse where you have to chase him all the damn time, it's so hard to get a hit on him and yes I am aware that I can bait him to do a fire attack where I can get free hits, but then he just flies off afterwards and there's still a huge chance of him charging at you. In conclusion, I've spent almost 30 attempts on this guy, and I've all but given up till a phantom comes along. My problem isn't that he's hard, but that he is unfair, I've yet to die once where I can legitimally say that it was my fault, you should always get punished for your mistakes not the game, making it feel like luck rather than skill. I can push through bullshit, but not 20000hp worth of bullshit, this bossfight is not rewarding as any fight should be nor do I acomplish anything, it's not fun. I challenge you to shoe me any boss in ds2, nej the ENTIRE SOULSBORNE FRANCHISE ng+ that is such bullshit, maybe the two king's pets in the Ivory king DLC, but I have not fought them (for good reason) so I could not say. If you read through all of this, then wow... ty, this has been my ted talk. [link] [comments] |
Is it true you can get Platinum trophy offline? Posted: 01 Sep 2020 05:49 AM PDT I heard that in NG++ there is an NPC that sells all covenant related items needed to get the Platinum trophy. But by browsing the Wiki I've seen at least one miracle that is obtained only by getting to rank 3 in a Heirs of the Sun. So is there or is there not a way to get all covenant related items offline? 7th playthrough, 3rd character Posted: 01 Sep 2020 07:11 AM PDT Finally, my Joker from a very questionable simpsons' bootleg can rest. Also, it is my first playthrough in the Company of Champions. A bit disappointing, ngl. [link] [comments] |

Do we know dps calculations for weapons? Posted: 01 Sep 2020 12:39 PM PDT I watched a video a long time ago that checked weapon damage for 2 handed weapons in Dark Souls 2. But I'm struggling to find it now at this point. It showed that the Sacred Chime Hammer did the most flat dps for 2-handers. Do we know dps calculations for weapons? I've been trying to find something like that, but most of the time I just find websites or videos that suggest what their top 10 weapons are subjectively. I'm looking for something a bit more objective, some kind of proof chart of weapon damage and dps. Does anyone know of such a thing? [link] [comments] |
noob, could use some PVE build help Posted: 01 Sep 2020 11:53 AM PDT I've played some of Demon's Souls and all of Dark Souls 1, so I'm not a complete newbie in the franchise but it's been quite a while and I can't say that I have more than a very rudimentary understanding of leveling/stats/builds. I'm also not really interested in pvp (at least for this character) I started in on DS2 as Deprived and picked the Petrified Something as my starting gift, figuring that I'd just see what I get there and let that guide the early early game. I don't have a strong preference for playstyle. I received a Channeler's Trident and spent some time grinding to make my character functional. So far I've got the 11 str and 15 dex needed for the trident, some points in vit, and around 26 (I think) adaptability to improve my rolling. I've made my way through the first real boss and am doing fine, but I'm not really sure where to take the character from here. I'm trying to avoid getting more spoilers than I need, so it didn't seem prudent to just do general research on the details of popular builds. So, broadly speaking, what are some recommended directions I can go from here buildwise? I'd be happy to consider really just about anything. I assume I'm not going to be using this trident forever, but I really don't know what's out there. I'm completely open to continuing this build for a while and then respeccing into a casting build at some point or just continuing with melee in whatever form. Thank you in advance for any advice? you guys use controllers right? I need help and i don't where else to go. Posted: 01 Sep 2020 07:36 AM PDT so i purchased an xbox one controller for use with my powerhouse i3 4gb ram windows 7 rig and i want to use it to play ds2, and cut a long story short it don't work. asking here because tech support reddits are as useless as the lost sinners sword. When I try to acquire drivers via windows update, it fails and comes back with the message that no drivers were found. and my pc continues to register it as "Controller" I have tried downloading the drivers, and installing manually, but it just hangs on the install screen indefinably. what else can I do? play with a mouse and keyboard. Can't seem to be able to enter the illusory wall that leads to the Forgotten Chamber Bonfire Posted: 01 Sep 2020 11:20 AM PDT I'm trying to get to this bonfire, because I realized I missed it when I first got here. Now the hidden door doesn't open. I had the king's ring equipped and crown and unequipped them, I've tried bumping into the wall and attacking it numerous times but nothing happens. I saw a video online and the only thing the player had to do was walk into the door. Am I missing something? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Sep 2020 07:25 AM PDT Hello there. Dark souls 2 Sotfs is my first dark souls. I'm not really sure on how the damage scaling in this game works, yet. So I'd like to know which stats to focus on if I want to use a shield and sword. Obviously I know that strength and vigor helps me with that, I've also read that vigors usefulness goes down in stages. I've looted the Heide knight sword just now and I really like the moveset. Does anyone know what stats would help me with the damage scaling on this weapon? Also, I guess the attribute bonus goes from E(bad) to A(very good). So I guess weapons with E don't scale at all and weapons with A have increased damage by that the level of that Stat? Current stats: VGR 20 END 20 VIT 19 ATN 4 STR 20 DEX 16 ADP 9 INT 3 FTH 6 [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Aug 2020 06:02 PM PDT I've beaten DS2 SotFS a few times but have decided to go to NG++ to get all the achievements and I need those last few spells. I've just beaten NG+ Nashandra and have been checking a few things off the list before striving forward into NG++. Then I remembered all of the blood stains in the throne room in Drangleic! So I go check it out and it's DOUBLE PURSUER! I tried the fight a few times and did some damage but died. I was determined to kill them and see if they drop a new fancy ring (since that seems to be the NG+ thing). I wasn't going to cheese 'em, I was going to fight them like a man... well an Undead man. So anyway, I started blasting. My lightning was messing up those mofos and the first one went down without me taking damage. Awesome! I KNEW I had this in the bag. The second one got a lucky hit in, no big deal, roll and drink some Sunny D. I'm wearing #2 down with some Great Lightning Spears and then he's down to one shot. I blast him... and he lives with one tiny sliver of red life. Fine, I'll just blast him again. At this point it's the third attack in his combo and I'm far enough way. Or am I? He tickles me with a single pixel and down I go... 1 stayed dead and it was a normal Pursuer fight. So I accidentally cheesed the toughest fight in NG+ cycle. Disappointed in myself. But I got a shiny ring and it's onto NG++! [link] [comments] |
Interesting Powerstance Combos Posted: 01 Sep 2020 11:00 AM PDT Looking for advice for my next playthrough. For my plat playthrough back in January I powerstanced a greatsword and zweihander. Going to run through again, and I have no idea what to do other than wanting to Powerstance. Thoughts? [link] [comments] |
Some random thoughts about Amana, the Fireflies and the Intro Posted: 31 Aug 2020 05:42 PM PDT I think it's interesting to draw a parallel between Amana, the Milfanito, and the opening cutscene. The Milfanito says that when they sing, the "little ones" dance, and with that, she's referring to the fireflies, or brightbugs how the game calls them, that start flying around the lizard-men and make them less aggressive while the ladies are singing. As most people like to believe, Vendrick most likely fled through Amana strategically so that Nashandra could not follow him, as she would be stopped by the song, and the Milfanito prisoner at the top of the castle was probably captured by her so that she could find a way to stop their singing, or control the fireflies. And then there's more. We reach Drangleic by a portal, a vortex in the lake that's opened by fireflies. Drangleic is cut-off from the outside world, and one has to wonder, was it the work of something, or someone? Vendrick, or Nashandra, perhaps? Could the Milfanito or the fireflies from Amana have played any part in this? Was the imprisoned Milfanito somehow associated with this event? How can the fireflies, which are specifically said to appease the dead, also have the power to open a path to another world? [link] [comments] |
