Dark Souls Origins: Explaining the Age of Ancients, First Flame, the first Life, Souls, Gwyn's "crimes", Humanity, and the Dark

    Posted: 21 Jan 2020 05:58 AM PST

A rather ambitious title I must admit.

The lore of Dark Souls is infamously vague. In a sense, this has proliferated its continuing appeal and analysis. Its mystery allows for significant interpretation, and it would be foolish to think there is an outright "correct" way of understanding things, especially with regards to laying down hard, inflexible factoids instead of more arguable thematic intention and "lessons." In a way, I have just now shot myself in the foot before I have even begun, by discrediting the possibility of my theory being a "true answer."

However, I firmly believe that any theory, if consistent with the data provided by the games, is valid. The art in crafting a unified theory and explanation of the unknown is in how encompassing, detailed, and pleasing it feels to the lost loreseeker. Its a value I find hard to quantify, but something I found satiated in strong regards when making this theory. I find that it helps iron out some of the supposed inconsistencies and head-scratchers of the game, like how the First of the Dead can move, what dead even means in a world filled with undead, how darkness can be representative of life etc. Please enjoy.

The Age of Ancients: Before the First Flame

    • The world is as stated. Full of gray crags, archtrees, and Everlasting Dragons.
    • The world is also as not directly stated. Crags imply a plunge of cliffside into a hole of some sort. I believe at the outskirts of the primordial crags of the world, deep in the abyss it borders, we have water. This is the water found in Ash Lake, and it is from this water, which we do not claim has a bottom necessarily, that the Archtrees rise up from.
    • The Everlasting Dragons are a pseudo-mineral lifeform, and therefore it is easy to make the case they are not life at all. I cannot claim that as to whether or not they could even move before the First Flame came into being, as whether they could or not fits into the rest of my theory rather equally.
    • The Everlasting Dragons, whether before or after the First Flame came into existence I cannot say, have within them a kind of light. I reference this to be the "Twinkle" referenced in Twinkling Titanite to be strange and of unknown origins. I claim this to be the same "Twinkle" erupting from the Twinkling Dragon Stones of Dark Souls 3, though I will be de-emphasizing references to Dks 3 in this post. They are mostly embellishing and reinforcing data that I may collect in another post and link to stay true to subreddit topic.
    • There is no disparity. There are no beings of flesh. The world is essentially inanimate and stone. I find it thematically pleasing to assume nothing even moved.

The Age of Ancients: The First Flame's birth, Bloodlife, and things before the war on the dragons

    • The First Flame comes into being in an inexplicable manner analagous to the Big Bang.
    • Just as the first cutscene describes, the First Flame generates all conceptual elements of the universe that have a compliment: Life/Death, Heat/Cold, Light/Dark etc. From this, we have disparity, change, and time, among various other metaphysical concepts. I would like to emphasize that now, we have these concepts, and particular for the "positive" part of them we have a kind of quantification of intensity. For example, we now have an existence things that can have a lack of Light, or once have light but now no longer do.
    • Lifeforms of flesh and blood are born in the darkness, animated and given life by the First Flame. I claim the most important takeaways from this is blood is the essence of most of what can be considered a lifeform in the Dark Souls universe, and that this is what carries the little piece of the First Flame that animates the lifeform. I like to believe that by being blood, these beings carried within themselves some of this serene, peaceful water of Ash Lake, having it as their birthplace in the very beginning.
    • The main lifeforms of blood that are notable are humanoid ones, but another important one is the Mushrooms, whose essence contains lightning, and allows or is resultant from their proliferation in the archtrees. The humanoid ones come in variable sizes, and incorporate the primeval men, which I claim to be the hollow-like humanoids rising out of nothing aimlessly in the intro, and what is ultimately kin to the primeval man but larger and perhaps generally less intelligent, giant men (Giants). I think it fits into the giant humanoid skull seen in Ash Lake and parts of the later series entries to regard the blood lifeform's having intelligence somewhat inversely correlated with size, at least in a vague sense. Not talking shit about wise old Gough. Also, I believe the smaller ones breed faster and die faster. Giants have a natural longevity.
    • The blood lifeforms could perish normally. This is represented by their shard of the First Flame burning out, and disappearing from the universe. I do not regard this "blood-fire" as being a form of soul power, although one can claim that it is and is related to one's true essence, and perhaps that is what is drawn from in the pyromancy the Power Within. I believe that it innately does not possess the properties that we have come to regard "soul" in Dark Souls though, namely that it can be transferred, broken down, fuse/build up, or used for a variety of purposes by means of its consumption or transposition by the sophisticated means later used by the gods. However, it can do these things to an extent, as this life can reproduce and consume each other. The reproduction in particular is certain, for the Witch of Izalith had daughters.
    • Near whatever remained of the First Flame (if there was anything left), but not in it (important distinction elaborated upon in developer interview), we had these things called Lord Souls. They were sparks of raw power that could be used, among other things for magic. It was essentially condensed energy units that could be manipulated, but I claim that they were initially much weaker than what is seen in the feats of the great war (they were just the little flames seen in Nito and the Witch's grasp) They were also uniquely eternal and had the potential to grow great in circumstances I will elaborate upon shortly.
    • Nito was an amalgamation of skeletons, with root skeleton being giant, reanimated by one Lord Soul, which he claimed and became a Lord. In this Age, I believe that since he was the only being considered "Undying", he essentially became a primeval deity that created tombs. As such he was a part of blood-life's earliest civilization, a being that watched over burial rites and customs. His realm lies near the bottom of the world, among other things due to its age. He may or may not be called "First of the Dead" because his base skeleton was the first lifeform to die. It may just be a loose title. I do believe that he was the first skeleton reanimated by soul-power.
    • Proto blood-life in the Age of Ancients continued to develop through checkpoints that mirror the stone, bronze age etc of real life. The breakthroughs in development correspond with realization of a Lord Soul. The Witch of Izalith and her daughters, by my explanation just shamans without much power initially, came from some ancient civilization and happened upon a Lord Soul. The Witch became Lord, and she and her daughters became the first humanoid magic-users, known ad hoc as flame sorcery since it manipulated or generated the primeval, I suspect largely by using the power of the Lord Soul. This is before the techniques or anything that resembled them were referred to as pyromancy, and I believe this magic to initially be quite weak, as the Lord Souls found so far are actually just sparks. They are possibly in some way eternal, remnants of the first flame that dwindle in a timeline akin to entropic death of the universe,
    • A great clan of knights led by a certain Gwyn (blood-life having continued to develop, now possessing weapon making and culture resembling medieval period) happened upon a Lord Soul, claimed it and became lord. Now this is where I start to make very big claims.
    • Gwyn either happened upon another Lord Soul that was demented, in that it was separated into two complimentary, unnatural pieces, or found another Lord Soul and perhaps with the assistance of the other lords proceeded to split it into these two unnatural pieces. Lets call these pieces the Light Soul and the Dark Soul.

The Age of Ancients: The Dark Soul and the First Men

    • Among the remaining humanoid blood-life not under the umbrella tribes associated with the Witch or Gwyn, identified by how they did not share in the prosperity of civilization and strength of a Lord Soul, were these guys called Pygmies. I think they were literally pygmies, in that they were smaller in stature to Gwyn's tribe, although perhaps not the Witch's, but in particular they were ultimately kin to their fellow humanoid blood-life. They were by all means rather sad, pathetic, and unevolved, still resembling the muck-men that rose out of nothing at the beginning of blood-life. As such, Gwyn and/or his people (which included his knights), looked down upon them. I believe that it was the destiny for these remaining sad pygmies to find a proper Lord Soul and develop a civilization, and this would have been a good and natural universe where the dragons still ruled eternal, and the lesser blood-life kindly accepted their status and did mortal stuff until who knows what. But through one way or another, Gwyn, the Witch, and Nito (or at least just Gwyn) accepted the Light Soul to massively amplify their Lord Souls, turning their sparks into suns (insert big flame analogy here).
    • The explanation I provide for the Light Soul comes simultaneously with an explanation of the Dark Soul. Initially, they are one, which I claim to be an ordinary Lord Soul, perhaps the only one left. However through whatever means they were split, the state of the pair was entirely unnatural, as if splitting a sub-atomic particle into positive and negative constituents, but that analogy does not continue, because they were holy unequal pieces of this Lord Soul. The Light Soul was the unbridled soul power of the Lord Soul now uncontained. Its disunion from its compliment, the Dark Soul, essentially allowed the long-lasting potential of the its proper form to be circumvented and "burnt-up" in some capacity. It is from this Light Soul that we have all the modern forms of soul-power, all significant, transferable condensations of this incredible energy, and the root energy used in all magic-proper afterwards. From the "sin" of the disunion comes the Dark Soul, a black flame. It indeed has soul-power, but is defined as the vestiges of the Lord Soul, that which should have been its outline, its border. Its as if the Lord Soul had an outer skin on its flame that was removed. The Dark Soul is defined by what is initially considered a weak power, and severely underestimated by at least Gwyn. The Dark Soul, although paling in comparison to what the Lord Souls and the Light Soul has given the rest of the blood-life, has an undying, heretical existence in the universe. Rather than begetting will, it has a will itself. It is alive. The other Lord Souls and forms of fire are not alive, they merely allow the growth of life in the dark. The Dark Soul, being alive, has want. It seeks to regain its "power", but more accurately described is that it wishes to make itself whole, in a way you might imagine positive and negative particulates want to rejoin. The Dark Soul is what turns the dark into the Dark. Darkness, which otherwise would just be the lack of flame and soul-power, can now expand and consume. It is a force that can be harnessed, but while initially weak, is unique in that it can expand. It grows in power with time, in search of what it has lost. But by nature of being born of a cursed existence, the dark is metaphysically an Abyss; as much as it consumes and grows, it can never be satiated. The Dark Soul is darkness contained and defined by light, it begins small and weak, but expands unnaturally. It perpetuates by nature in an inverse of how we would expect a "Big Bang" type fire, reaching its apex at the end of existence with its dark flame border encompassing all. The Light Soul on the other hand, is at its apex at its very beginning. The Dark Soul inherits an "undying" part of the Lord Soul spark, or otherwise gains this quality by nature of its unnatural birth.
    • The "Furtive Pygmy" finds the Dark Soul, or given a Ringed City statue, is knowingly given the Dark Soul by Gwyn in a pseudo-deific act that starts the image of Gwyn's tribe being a race known as Gods. The Furtive Pygmy splits the Dark Soul into humanity. Each of the pygmies gains some amount of humanity, perhaps more going to those that would become known as pygmy lords in the Ringed City, and thus we have Men. From their very birth, they are cursed, for they live symbiotically with the humanity within them. The humanity sprite within each of the first men is alive, in the same description I have used for the Dark Soul. They are sprites with will and tinged with soul-energy (their white border), but are built up of darkness. The humanity sprites cannot avert their nature of pursuing that which they have lost/don't have, and yearn for soul and flame invariably (Pursuers flavor text). As such, Men is cursed itself, and that which makes them human corrupts their actions with avarice.
    • The Darkness within the humanity can now grow like a lifeform, consuming soul-power insatiably. Men now exhibit a power of undeath not yet seen by the Gods or other life, death is temporary cessation. Even if their blood and natural power of body runs thin, their humanity keeps them "alive." However, they can lose their memory and power upon death in the form of "soul", and the actual soul-power part of their humanity can be degraded and used-up, which gives risk to the darkness in the essence of the sprite being unleashed and going out of control, which can give rise to horrors (more on that later).

The Age of Ancients: The War with the Dragons

    • With the strength of Lords, they challenged the dragons.
    • It was when all Lords enflamed their Lord Souls did they gain the strength to challenge the ancient winged deities.
    • Gwyn fashions lightning magic out of natural inspiration from the mushrooms innate lightning (see Yellow Pine Resin dropping from mushroom men and its text in Dks3). It is given incredible power from what he and his race has harnessed, and can pierce the dragons.
    • The Witches and Nito do what you see in the cutscene, powered by their Lord Souls.
    • The dragons are animated by their incredible internal "twinkling" light, they are "killed" in the same way you kill a statue by breaking it. A more accurate term would just be that they were discombobulated and broken down.
    • Men help in the battle! They at this point have a civilization.

The Age of Fire: The Good ole days

    • Gwyn, Nito, and the Witch inherit the world.
    • Gwyn leads the gods and men up an archtree to the outer crust of the world. With his overwhelming power, he manifests remnants of the first flame as the Sun using his Lord Soul. On the outskirts of the world, he gifts the First Men the Ringed City, and his daughter Fillianore eventually freezes it in time with an illusion.
    • Gwyn notes the insatiable, undying dark power within humanity. He fears that the darkness seems to only grow, it cannot be destroyed, at best it can be sealed. It has power that can be harnessed but is in a way infinite, in very much an inverse to the Light Soul that has been used by the gods and is now indistinct liquid energy distributed amongst them (I believe alot is in Gwyn himself).
    • Gwyn places a seal of fire on the pygmies, who believe it a mark of blessing. Indeed, it can be construed honestly as helpful, for the seal of fire contains the darkness within them, unable to expand or go out of control in normal circumstance. Men can contain the darkness within them, unnatural as it all is.
    • However! The seal of fire causes a distinct problem. The dark within humanity can now fester, still and stagnant, leaking analogies of pus, rot, and corruption. It leads to an impurity of the dark not even seen previously, but its power is still largely contained, becoming a more long-term issue. The dark is ultimately staved off by primordial fire, which is the nature of the seal.
    • Upon death, their inner darkness trapped, Men reanimate but in the process deteriorate the pure essence that lines their humanity. This has the effect of them losing their "humanity", over multiple reanimations they will lose their sanity and memory. The inner darkness remains sealed by fire. It is trapped within their bodies, and cannot leave.
    • Nito quite literally artificially creates death for these beings. His realm of death, the Tomb of the Giants, becomes the first Abyss. Upon the death of an undead, the darkness is released into the void of his domain, and its sentience is satisfied with a piece of his Lord Soul. This is in reference to how his Lord Soul is said to have been used in large part in "offering to death." Indeed, there is no death for these beings without Nito, and it requires sacrifice of his energy. Because of this, the Tomb becomes a holy part of the Way of the White.
    • The Witch of Izalith at some point attempts to recreate the First Flame from her own Lord Soul, causing the Chaos Flame and spawning demons. Later flavor texts suggest that somehow she began with control over it, but this control deteriorated, spawning the more chaotic and monsterous demons as her own mutated being becomes a seedbed. Their life is entirely ephemeral, the passing of the Chaos flame that "powers" the demons as the First Flame powers bloodlife is inevitable, lacking any element of immune to the passage of time, and overall short-lived. When they die, they die. And their time is limited in the long-run.

The Age of Fire: The First Linking

    • Gwyn splits his rightly inherited Lord Soul into pieces, giving the two largest fragments to Seath and to the yet corrupted Four Kings. He goes to the kiln of the First Flame, which is a ritualistic site with quasi-physical placement in the universe where he can attempt a kindling of it. Parts of its construction suggest Izalith architecture, and it being built inside an archtree. Kaathe rises from the Abyss to put the Chosen Undead there, suggesting that it is not on the bottom of the world.
    • Gwyn attempts to use himself as kindling for the First Flame to extend his "Sun" and his reign, interconnected elements that overall asserts the placement of the Gods as being the most powerful race of the world. This "greedy" action does not work out as planned, Gwyn's soul power is mostly unused by the kindling, hence the remain of a phantasm of his skill and power as Gwyn, Lord of Cinder. Instead, the Flame rekindles itself by burning the part of Gwyn's soul analagous to the white tinge of humanity, this leaves him in a state that looks similar to an undead hollow.
    • The Age of Fire continues, shorter and weaker than before.

    The Age of Fire: Decay

    • The Gods influence dwindles. The Primordial Serpents, whose role certainly had some play before all this, start to have some clear agenda. At least one oddball possesses an agenda to prevent the natural march of time and restore and maintain the Age of Fire as long as possible. He arranges with the Way of the White and the gods to create some bells and the Lordvessel, and slumbers in awaiting a "Chosen undead" whose strength is tested in ringing the bells, which wakes up Frampt. Frampt then, with less than stellar honesty, attempts to guide the undead to regain the Lord Souls and Lord Soul shards, which they must first do by gaining the Lord Vessel in Anor Londo, and then killing god-like entities that possess them.
    • The ritual fails innumerable times. Ingward notes the existence of at least one undead gaining the Lordvessel before, and odds are they eventually met their demise due to not being strong enough.
    • Primordial Serpent Kaathe "gifts" an ability of Lifedrain to undead warriors in New Londo. This single action annihilates the city with men's corruption, with Lifedrain they can now drain the very internal humanity sprite, with it the inner darkness and pure power of its border, of other humans. The action is analagous to spiritual cannabalism, but allows men to gain incredible power from each other. From this point, we now have a phenomena of humanity being disembodied from their bodies, which can cause hollowing/death of men.
    • Among general decay and waning influence of the gods, Nito's power falters, and some men do not die. They are what become known as undead. Unlucky cursed ones, often put in asylums, for one reason or another they could not be satiated by Nito's global ritual.

Crafting this theory was like making a macaroni-art plate, my mom is really proud and technically its art, but its as valuable only in so much as you the reader enjoys it. It can be patched up or even thrown in the garbage, but I hope at least it inspired some of your own ideas. I may adapt or refine it come the right time.

The saddest part of the game for me

    Posted: 21 Jan 2020 07:10 PM PST

So this one definitely has to be talking to The Fair Lady. I always thought she just didn't make sound but since she had dialogue with a question mark I was confused. Turns out you can wear a ring to talk to her. She believes you to be Qualagg and it's so depressing. She told me not to cry and it really makes me think that you the player are mourning over what you had to do. When you walk away without closing the conversation and come back she'll ask if everything is alright. I'm assuming she was talking to her sister when we entered to ring the bell and that's what she said to her. Apparently the original plan was to make Qualaag an optional boss. But no one can be happy in this universe.

Anor Londo is a helluva drug

    Posted: 21 Jan 2020 08:35 PM PST

So I had just been working my way through Anor Londo on my first playthrough and I had just killed the Silver Knight overlooking the fog gate for O+S. As I was lining up a plunging attack on the giant guys downstairs (whom I was just aggro'ing) I got a notification saying that a Dark Spirit named "Precious~" (on PC) had invaded my world.

Now, I love me a good invasion and since Remastered is actually the fourth FromSoft game I've played I like to think that I am pretty decent at PvP. Since I was getting pretty good at parrying on this playthrough I decided why not let the giants in on the action while I dance with the invader! The invader was being a good sport and didn't really attack me as the giant guys kept poking at me so I ran up the stairs, beckoning the chap for a good ol' 1v1.

What ensued was 5-10 minutes of hilarity. It was like Keith David and Rowdy Roddy Piper fighting over the sunglasses. Glorious. I laughed like a madman through the whole thing. This guy was GOOD! A total backstab monster. I got a handful in as well along with a few parries and ripostes here and there, but I was vastly outclassed by my foe.

However, this didn't play out like a duel to the death. I can't explain it, but we seemed to find an understanding of sportsmanship in the duel, and so neither of us went for the killing blow. We went from a duel between a clunky claymore PvE build and a far more agile red dual wielder to a bare-knuckled all out back alley-brawl in front of the stain glassed window. By the end, it appeared our appetites had been sated and so my well-mannered invader gave me a final wave and returned to their world. I'm still grinning ear to ear just typing this.

I just want to say... if you're out there, Precious~:

    Jolly good show.

    • pharis hat
    • wolf ring
    • secondary ring that doesnt increase equip load (you want to be fat rolling)
    • smoughs armor ( could also use catarina armor but wouldn't recommend)
    • havels gauntlets and leggings
    • uchigatana ( + 15 or chaos)

Edit: People were saying to use Chester's armor instead, which you can but this was made so that you don't need the DLC to make it

Did you ever think of the things you would add-change if you designed the remaster?

    Posted: 22 Jan 2020 03:05 AM PST

I always thought that the game would be better for both experienced and new players if we didn't have 0 poise by default. Because getting staggered by crossbow bolts or just oversized rats is both unrealistic and anti-fun. Do you remember that one stat: The one which makes you resistant to poison and such, the one you should never level... Yes, I think we gained like a 20 poise at 50 Resistance (It's just random, that numbers could be balanced pretty well I think.) we would both get rid of that endless Fashion-Defense-Poise calculations we had and also make a worthless stat worthwhile.

    Anything to know before starting?

    Posted: 22 Jan 2020 02:23 AM PST

I started with DS2 and have over 200 hours playtime. I killed every boss in the game including DLC and have a few NG+ characters. Finished the game using 2H great hammers, great shield + Zweihänder, hexer, Katana build, rapiers and many others. Still didn't bored though.

I'll be getting DS: Prepare To Die Edition this February. Anything to know before starting? Like mechanical differences, build ideas, weapon upgrades. I heard hex is not available, it has something like dark magic, what is this? Are miracles stronger than DS2? Differences between DS2 and DS pyromancy. (I am not into sorcery)

This Community Never Fails to Astonish Me

    Posted: 21 Jan 2020 06:37 PM PST

So I don't normally play PVP but I try to make sure I follow the normal etiquette when invaded. It may be annoying for me at times, but I won't rob someone of their joy in an honorable duel. About 5 minutes ago I had just beaten Artorias on my first play through the DLC (3rd or 4th attempt) and I'm invaded by a red phantom who I had literally just beaten before walking through Artie's fog wall. This phantom drops a white slab, a hero's soul and two fire keeper souls. This behavior surprised and confused me and I felt like i needed to repay the favor but didn't know how. I still don't so when they came up on guard I let them kill me. I'm not sure if there was supposed to be some further etiquette or if this was someone just being nice but for someone who suffers from anxiety and depression this community can really make me feel connected despite having no idea who you really are. So whoever you are, I want to put a thank you out into the universe for you and thank the community as a whole for making my night, as small as it may seem. Your honor rivals Sir Alonne.

    Posted: 22 Jan 2020 02:27 AM PST

Hi there! I own the game on Switch and I love it to death (am a Souls veteran for several years now).

But sometimes the "Y" button doesn't feel like responding, no matter how often I press it. I wasn't PvP'ing and I wasn't affected by a Loyd's Talisman or anything.
This has made me die about 5 times now and is incredibly infuriating.

I know not a lot could be done about shite like this, but it would make me feel better knowing it's not just me. Because if it is.... that's probably a problem sith my joycons

    I Fear the Capra Demon

    Posted: 21 Jan 2020 10:00 PM PST

    Hey,

I'm on my second playthrough of Dark Souls right now and trying to do all the things I missed the first time around. I've just killed the bell gargoyals in 1 shot without solarie and got the tail axe. And just cleared the asylum stray demon and black knights.

I'm afraid because the Capra fight is coming soon and I'm worried that my experience this time will not be as good. My first playthrough I beat it on my first go cause I got both dogs in my opening slash and then justed kited up and down the stairs. Everyone talks about how it's a BS boss in that tight space and how they got wrecked. Did I fluke on my first playthrough? Also I'm currently level 70. Is that high enough? I know I already beat the game but I made such a mess of it beating the game at a low level cause I died so much and lost all my souls. I'm trying to build and level appropriately this time.

    Attack Patterns

    Posted: 21 Jan 2020 08:20 PM PST

So, I was plying Artorias of Abyss, during Manus' battle I observed his attacks, and noticed some Patterns, for those who battled Soul of Cinder, in the second phase, the first attack is a 3 crossed and 1 up to down attack, which is the same as Manus', the distance are the Sword and the Hand, also, Soul of Cinder's lightning attacks, followed the same pattern as Manus' dark magic attacks. Even though the second phase being Gwyn itself, it was also the primeval opposite, Manus, the first ones in their respective grounds. I think that other have noticed that, or everyone except me, but it happens.

Today i did beat the Bell Gargoyle boss

    Posted: 22 Jan 2020 03:39 AM PST

Yesterday i made a Post about me starting the game for the first time, and so far this game is really awesome, it is very addictive too i have to admit.

The Gargoyle boss is such a good design, and i did feel intimidated directly it's fast and deadly, a small place to fight a boss with a lot of range to his attacks makes for a fun and a bit frustrating experience. But once defeated makes room for a lot of joy.

Some fun things did happen also during the fight, and what a big surprise it was when a second Gargoyle did show up especially with his attacks Ruining my day.

Video of me fighting the Gargoyle boss.

Just conquered the real hardest challenge in DS1.

    Posted: 21 Jan 2020 07:42 PM PST

Yeah, Manus is a pain in the ass and all. But the real challenge in DS1 is dual sanctuary guardians. They fucked me up really badly for a few attempts. They'd complement each other so when I try to hit one, the other cockblocks and flinches me with lightning. But then, one of them developed a kink for the wave attack that leaves it vulnerable. So I took it out with the gold tracer in the right hand and Priscilla's dagger in the left then punished the second guardian. It isn't easy getting stunlocked and losing two-thirds of your health. So I am proud of this one.

    Painted World Creepy "Whispers" spot

    Posted: 21 Jan 2020 11:26 PM PST

I know there've been many posts about this spot but I noticed something...

For those that don't know, there's a ledge in the painted world with a bunch of spikes with bodies on them (where Jeremiah invades you) and you can hear a faint chanting/whispering in the background. It's one of the only spots in the game where you can hear this...

I noticed that the spikes are the EXACT same as the the roof finials (pointy thing at the top of a roof) in New Londo - I'm talking about the 3-pronged thing.

What does this mean? Re-used asset? Or perhaps these 3-pronged spikes have some sort of deeper connection the Abyss?

Any hints on the next area to head to?

    Posted: 21 Jan 2020 10:59 PM PST

I posted a question the other day about if I should or shouldn't use the drake sword on my first full playthrough of the game. Just a little update and asking for a tip or two.

I decided to go ahead and suffer my way through and not use the drake sword. I kept my "dinky longsword" and kept pressing on. I kept running past the annoying metal plated porkchop and eventually found my way over to the black smith right before you get to the Onion Gate Guard. At this point I had fought so many hollows around undead burg and the like that I had a lot of titanite shards and I upgraded my "dinky longsword" into the toothpick of destiny by giving it a +5. After that and realizing how much damage I could do now I went back to the weird church building killed all the animated Halloween decorations and found the fire keepers soul. Not knowing exactly what it does besides making my sunny-D have a bit more spice according to the flavor text of the item. I ate it. After that I went over and activated the elevators which brought me back to firelink shrine. I went back up the elevator and up onto the roof where I found out that because of the burning of Notre Dame last year the hunchback's gargoyle buddies had to relocate and apparently weren't very happy about it. It took my 3 times and a sprinkle of gold fairy dust but I finally got them to calm the hell down. I climbed up the ladder and rang the libery bell which someone had stole from Philadelphia.

After bringing the bell back to the founding fathers I went back to the electric type pokemon hiding next to the blacksmith's shop and ran past him because apparently being undead doesn't give you any bonuses against the fucking paraplegic lightning wizard. I did my part to screw up climate change by chopping down a few trees. Walked all the way to a locked door that needed a special keycard to open so I turned around. On my way back I saw another pathway that led me to an elevator to the valley of the drakes. I pretty much ran away from the drakes when I realized my attacks weren't doing squat to the zappy pigeons. I ran past those and ran into puff the undead magic dragon and noped the fuck back up the elevator. Walked around the lost woods in search of my ocarina and stumbled upon very unfriendly ice gnomes and their leader Snake Hawkalugy. (Must be some native American name.) Once I learned being spit on wasn't one of my kinks I traveled back to the undead burg and into blight town. Helped put down some sick puppies. Met a few unsavory thieves and fought and killed an exceedingly annoying capa demon in the space of a broom closet.

That is where I currently am. I can't find a way to proceed any further because from what I understand if you're not doing any damage to anything in an area you're probably not in the right area.

If anyone can give me a tip or two of where I need to go next that would be awesome!.

TL:DR fought and killed the gargoyles and can't seem to figure out where to go next.

Do you think Dark Souls can only be appreciated with the mindset of a determined player, or does it form that mindset as the person plays

    Posted: 21 Jan 2020 06:38 PM PST

I have a friend that's annoying me because if he can't do something he quits. Some times he quits because he thinks that it's a waste of his time, although the fact he can't do it proves otherwise. I know it sounds like I'm being nosy but Dark Souls has been a huge part of my life and has made me a better person (I think it has for us all). I think that if he gave it a try, not only would he like it, it may also help him change his mindset. On the other hand, do you think that Dark Souls only caters to people with that personality to begin with.

    DS3: Recommend me a build!

    Posted: 22 Jan 2020 01:56 AM PST

So a little about me and what I am looking for:

I have beaten DS1 twice, once with a pure STR tank - and another time with a cleric knight (via /u/clericknight) that I am just wrapping up now.

I have gotten all the way to the end of DS3 once with a pure STR tank wielding a bastard sword, got stuck on the brothers and (optional I know) nameless king fights and kind petered out. Restarted with a INT wizard that could box with a ceastus need be... got about 1/2 way through the game, wasn't really my thing.

So now - I am about to fire up DS3 again and want you to suggest me a build. Feel free to link me to a prefab already on the internet or go into as much detail as you would like otherwise.

What I am pretty sure I want (but you don't have to limit your suggestions to this):

A medium armor, sword and board character.

Good (nongreat) shield in one hand, Dex or Quality weapon in the other.

I am kind of terrified of a quality build, becuase the stat distribution really bugs me. I like having like 2-3 stats to dump points in. But I think long swords are really cool.

I have never really invested in DEX so that's a whole universe of opportunity I look forward to hearing about. I am almost positive I don't want to go twin-swords though. I hate playing characters that have to constantly roll to survive, I want a shield.

I don't know anything about status specific characters but I have heard people throw things around like "Dex bleed" builds etc. That might be interesting? not sure.

If I remember correctly, Faith based characters don't really shine until NG+ or at least end of game in ds3 which isn't super attractive to me, if true... but I will still hear an argument if you have a passionate one. I am all about praising the sun.

Also PVE is all I care about.
