Beating Gwyn without a shield really makes you appreciate how easy he is with parries

    Posted: 13 Nov 2019 12:06 AM PST

On my last run I decided to fight Gwyn "fair and square man to man" for a change and resolved to not parry or block any of his attacks. Character wasnt a challenge run or anything so I figured with my level and gear itd be a piece of cake.

Much to my surprise I ended up struggling for maybe half an hour or more just to finally finish him off. Learned the hard way the first few attempts that he is really good at rollcatching and punishing chugging (PVPers take notes.) Also mixed up his combos later in their chains, and damn if his fast swing isnt annoying to roll in time for.

As embarassing as it was for someone who's beaten the game a couple times by now, I couldnt help but think how generous it was for From to make him parryable even if no other boss in the game is. Whether you consider it cheese or not, it feels similar to what they did with Demon Souls in subverting your expectations on how challenging the final boss of an already hard game should be. And honestly I really like how they chose instead to highlight the king's downfall in both cases rather than the fact that he used to be, well, a king.

    Jumping headless hydra

    Posted: 13 Nov 2019 02:43 AM PST

I'm sure I'm not the first person to discover this but I wanted to share nonetheless. If you chop off some of the hydra's heads and rest at a bonfire, the hydra will regain its health but not its heads. Then if you chop of all its heads without depleting all of its health it will still be alive.

I took a video of it jumping across ash lake, it looks really silly.

Logan died in the archives, and not by my hand. I NEED HELP

    Posted: 12 Nov 2019 10:41 PM PST

Is he gone for good? A fucking snake guy came up and whacked him dead while I was in his cell in the Archives Prison. I got his hat, catalyst, and white breath. Do I need to do GODDAMN NEW GAME PLUS and redo his quest in order to get the sorceries I need, or will his padawan guy back in firelink sell the sorceries?

Why are all Pyromancers so nice?

    Posted: 12 Nov 2019 06:30 AM PST

Aside from Catarina Knights and Solaire, they are the only people who's I always regret killing. More often than not I avoid doing their quest so that they don't go hollow (looking at you Laurentius). To list a few, Laurentius, Cornyx and Quelana of Izalith. There are more but these are the ones that stick with me. Yes, it's true that you rescue Laurentius and Cornyx. Still, you rescue Lautrec and he's still a dick, so it's not that.

Great Swamp pyromancers, although their spells may suggest otherwise, are very kind hearted. Eingyi, Cornyx and Laurentius all treat you with respect.

Quelana is one of the daughters of Chaos. Quite simply, this could give her a sense of royal entitlement like Gwyn's line. She could use her status as an excuse to be rude. And yet, when you first meet her, she greets you amicably and asks you about yourself, rather than talk about anything related to the Witch of Izalith.

People call the great swamp pyromancers "heretics" because of the nature of their spells. They don't see them for who they truly are.

    Edit: spacing and autocorrect

Edit2: I guess you could say this post... blew up. this has got me... fired up.

Is prepare to die edition on pc dead?

    Posted: 13 Nov 2019 01:51 AM PST

The only time I've had an online encounter was I got to summon another player for the bell gargoyles, and yes I've spent most of the game as human. There's been no invasions, and I joined the darkwraith covenant and I can't find anyone to invade to steal humanity. Was wondering if there's a place to go to that is hot for invasions or if there's a certain level I need to reach, or maybe the games just dead and everyone moved to the remaster, which would be a real shame.

Dark souls themed gift for bf??

    Posted: 12 Nov 2019 06:36 AM PST

Hello! I've never used reddit before but my boyfriend does for dark souls related things, so I was hoping someone here could help me.

So, my bfs birthday is coming up and I wanted to do something not basic and stupid, and I've decided on a dark souls themed scavenger hunt!! The thing is though, I'm not the most knowledgeable at dark souls.

To explain a little, the format of the scavenger hunt would most likely be me leaving him some dark souls themed riddle/ notes leading to certain locations in our house until he would find a box of themed gifts. I only work part time in fast food, so I don't have too much money, for the most part I was thinking of making the gifts.

One of the ideas I had was energy drinks but I make fancy "estus flask" labels to put on them. I was going to make him a painting of a bonfire too. I need some more ideas though!! He's played all of the games a million times, but 1 and 3 are his favourites and I know that he loves solaire (who doesnt!!)

To sum this up, it would be super helpful if anyone could give me some ideas for the dark souls themed notes/ riddles leading to various household locations, and any INEXPENSIVE and preferably DIY gifts for him.

    Thank u :)

Dark Souls means a lot to me.

    Posted: 12 Nov 2019 03:45 PM PST

My journey started with Dark Souls on the 360 back in 2012, I was only 12 years old and the only ROG I had played at this point was Skyrim which I loved, the art direction, music and combat is what drove me to give it a shot when it was free with Xbox Live Gold, so I did.

After struggling through all the way to undead parish, this would be where I would give up multiple times, I wasn't sure where to go and couldn't figure out what to do so this is where I would drop the game, I would go on to restart multiple times just to end up stuck in the same place,.

Skip a couple years and Bloodborne comes out, I buy it because I love the look of the combat at the Lovecraftian inspiration, I bought it with the mindset that I wouldn't get to the 5th boss in the game but I bought it anyway, I had to try, I went on to beat Bloodborne and it's DLC 30+ times.

This gave me the confidence and understanding of these games to play through all of FromSofts masterpieces, I then went on to beat DS3 and Sekiro 9+ times. However, DS1 and 2 were on a pedestal for me, I was a natural at Bloodborne so of course I was good at DS3 which implemented a lot of its features, DS1 and 2 were on a difficulty pedestal and honestly started up DS2 I was anxious, it took a few tries but eventually I would go on to beat DS2: SOTFS as well.

This left only DSR to be conquered. A lot of people say it's the hardest, a lot of people say it's the best, we've come full circle, after all the other games and all the years maturing as a gamer the once overwhelming game that 12 year old me couldn't get halfway through was now beatable and beat it I did, currently I'm on my 4th playthrough and 1 trophy away from platinum which I never in my wildest dreams would have thought.

From DS1-Sekiro, these games are masterpieces and I don't think I'll ever stop playing them, I'll always come back to them. I never thought I would be good enough to even beat one of these games and now I'm about to have multiple of them platinum.

These games are art, truly, the level design, art direction, sound design, builds, game mechanics, lore, everything. These are experiences I'll never give up for anything. I turned 20YO this November 2nd and you know I know an older gamer who has a kid, he very often says, "I wish I could play DS, it's right up my alley of games but between my kid, my wife, my job, I barely have the time for casual games."

This is really sad and one of the reasons I'll never ever have kids. Me and my GF of almost 5 years have played through every Souls game multiple times together. These games have changed my perception on many things and changed and bettered me as a person and player and I feel really bad for the people who don't have the opportunity to play them. Having kids is not something for me, it just isn't and I would never sacrifice these experiences for something like that.

For some these games are just games and that's fine, for me, they've changed me as a person and I can't thank FromSoft enough.

So boys I did it. I beat Lord gwyn

    Posted: 12 Nov 2019 08:24 AM PST

The gwyn fight was pretty easy to be honest. Next time I won't summon solaire

Edit: I'm just asking because I used manus catalyst and a soul arrow against the moonlight butterfly and it dealt like 16 damage and then a dark spell on a random hollow and it dealt 200+(still not as high as my physical weapon but I'm getting there) so I'm just kind of confused I mean 16 is low even if it is a basic spell

Why do people hate Izalith so much

    Posted: 12 Nov 2019 04:35 PM PST

I know that the area is rushed and the bed of chaos is an atrocious boss, but the demon ruins and Izalith are so cool. Centipede demon is a pretty fun boss IMO and the Demon Firesage was not much of a hassle. This is one of the coolest looking in the game with the giant palace and ruins in the lake of lava. This area is different then the castles and towns presented through most of the game, and, you can run across the lakes of lava which is really cool. I just don't understand how this area is less interesting than the ToTG, where there is quite literally nothing to see.

    Trounced Gwyn’s Behind

    Posted: 12 Nov 2019 06:55 PM PST

First time DS player and I JUST BEAT THE GAME OH MY GOD I BEAT DARK SOULS EVERYONE SAID IT'S SO HARD AND I BEAT I FEEL GREAT I EVEN TOOK DOWN ARTORIAS AND MANUS AND F*CK ME THEY WERE HARD BUT I DID IT EVERYTHING IS GREAT!

Anyway that being said, I'm going to immediately start a second play through with a Strength focus so I can wield a +15 Zwei. But I just wanted to say that I ended up figuring out how to parry...and...uhm...

Why the hell did Gwyn SO HEAVILY telegraph everything he was about to do? Like that last fight is incredible for so many reasons...but like not cause of the difficultly 😂

And of course, I recognize that this fight is INSANE if you just can't get that timing down to parry him because he is relentless, so I definitely don't want to trash players that have trouble with that. I just have naturally good timing (S Ranked everything in Elite Beat Agents 😂🤦‍♂️)

Anyway I guess those are just the thoughts going through my mind now that I've beaten it. I expected to like the game, but I didn't expect to absolutely love it. I'm a bit in awe of the whole experience honestly.

    Thank you for listening!

The first time I completed Dark Souls, I did it in 45 hours, This weekend I did it in 7 hours

    Posted: 12 Nov 2019 09:34 AM PST

I used to think it was the hardest game ever but the reality is I wasn't good enough. This weekend, without too much challenge, I did it in 7 hours. I took my time too. I didn't rush through it. I just did what I normally do. Of course, I got lucky and got a black knight halberd at the beginning of the game and it was everything easy. It's ok I had my backup weapon t: The zweihander.

So for anyone who still struggle with this game, just stick to it a little longer, the reward is not far.

    To Link The Fire...[Spoiler]

    Posted: 12 Nov 2019 06:18 PM PST

Reach "To Link The Fire" Ending

    Geez...this game was AMAZING!

And honestly, my favorite in the DS series, and second in the SoulsBorne series!

In just over 50 hours I beat every boss.

I went in about 75% blind, because I looked up any bosses/Areas I missed before Gwyn. (Moonlight Butterfly, Gwyndolin, Painted World, Stray Demon, and the DLC.) Also, my friend gave me a couple of suggestions here and there. But for the most part it was all comepletely new!

Here is my boss death counter btw (don't be too impressed though, I've beaten BB 9+ times, DS3 5+ times, and went for a full Havel's armor, Zweihander build.)

    Asylum Demon: 0 Deaths

    -Very easy

    Taurus Demon: 0 Deaths

    -Forgettable

    Bell Gargoyles: 4 Deaths

    -Not very easy

    Capra Demon: 0 Deaths

    -Kill dogs

    Gaping Dragon: 4 Deaths

-Lots of health...I was underleveled with no weapon upgrades...

    Chaos Witch Quelaag: 2 Deaths

-I was spoiled by my friend to block, and walk around in a circle...

    Iron Golem: 3 Deaths

    -Mmm...Minecraft...

    Ornstein and Smough: 2 Deaths

-My second proudest acheivement of the WHOLE game

    Ceaseless Discharge: 0 Deaths

-My friend told me about the cheese and I HAD to do it

    Demon Firesage: 5 deaths

-Not particularly hard, just lot LOTS of HP +estus on the way there.

    Centipede Demon: 4 Deaths

-...and I hated every moment of it...

The Bed of Chaos: 1 Death

-STORY TIME!!! I have literally the best RNG. I don't know if I cheated, or what, but I destoryed the second glowly orb thing and ran around trying to figure out where to go, before getting YEETED onto the center root, and running forward to what I thought was the next phase of the boss, but was actually an instant kill, and my souls into my checking account...I was disappointed severly because I thought that was supposed to happen, but after googling...it was not...

    Pinwheel: 0 Deaths

    -This was a boss...?

    Nito: 0 Deaths

-I think I broke the AI. I stayed under him with my shield up taking pot shots, and poising through all of his attacks. He did nothing but spam the AOE

Great Gray Wolf Sif: 1 Death

-4 Words. Very sad, sword spin.

    Four Kings: 3 Deaths

-Very cheese, if I didn't have OP Havel poise, I would have been done for.

    Seath The Scaleles: 4 Deaths

-I summoned someone each time, just for funsies. I regret it slightly, but the fight didn't seem that hard. IDK though, sadly.

    Moonlight Butterfly: 0 Deaths

    -Lame.

    Gwyndolin: ~5~ Deaths

-Didn't count because It was like 2 AM, but it wasnt any more than 10, and I remember the first three especially because I didn't use a greatshield until after my third death.

    Sanctuary Guardian: 0 Deaths

    -Fun, but forgettable.

Knight Arstorias the Abyss Walker: 6 Deaths

-LOVED this fight, but has a terrible runback.

    Black Dragon Kalameet: 10+ Deaths

-Like 15 deaths if you count the area before you can actually fight him, where he just does fire breath thing. Still died plenty during the actual fight too.

*Manus, Father of the Abyss: 3 Deaths

Was spoiled about the Silver Pendant, and to play it more like a BB boss, with more dodging and quick hits, rather than turtling and blocking.

    Stray Demon: 0 Deaths

-Mediocre, but it was nice seeing how much stronger I'd became.

    Crossbreed Priscilla: 2 Deaths

Very easy after learning what to do, felt really bad.

Gwyn, Lord of Cinder: 0-10 Deaths

-Depends on how you look at it, because I either fought him with the intent to die, or not even trying too hard anyways because I knew it would take me right into NG+ if I killed him. At the time I first fought him, I still had many bosses left, but wanted to play around with the fight. BUT, when I fought him for real, I beat him 'first try' no hit!!! MY CROWNING ACHIEVEMENT IN ALL OF SOULSBORNE!!! Thank god for parrying, because it only took like 5-6 parrys, and ripostes to kill him. He went for the grab once, and I just dodged and went right back to waiting for a parry. He literally did one type of sword attack the whole time, it was a little dissapointing, but so, so hype at the same time. I think I wasnn't actually supposed to/expected to parry him so often, similar to Gherman in BB.

    MY CHARACTER STATS:

    25/8/40/50/10/11/8/10

    Level 80

Honestly, this game is a near masterpiece, and other than a few, LITTLE things it's perfect. I'm so happy I played this game, and next up is DS2....

    After I reach NG+2

Magnus taught me the value of conscious learning

    Posted: 12 Nov 2019 03:28 PM PST

After the urge of several people from this subreddit to play the DLC of DS1, I gave in and dove into the past. Boy am I glad I did. The DLC is just a collection of enjoyable boss battles.

I know a lot of people love Artorias (I do too), but in my opinion Magnus was the highlight of the DLC. Super aggressive, super strong , super unfair, his relentless attacks give no room for breathing nor healing.

I took about 4 hours to beat the guy, but a big chunk of that time was wasted with me just diving into the abyss and doing my best to manhandle magnus.

Eventually I grew tired of losing so I checked up some tips online--and the best tip I found was to understand his forearm movements. And then I spent the next hour and a half deconstructing his moveset.

It was at that point that I was sure of what I felt--I was thoroughly enjoying the game. Just one more... That was what I was continuously telling myself. One more and I'll perfect it... And perfect it I did. The last round between me and magnus was a dance--I was totally in the zone and I knew I had it in the bag.

All in all I enjoyed the process of learning. This is why I love dark souls so much. It doesn't try to be too realistic - - it knows it is a game, and it puts you in the position of learning how to beat the game methodically.

I love this game so much.

Friend attacked andre and now I’m fucked

    Posted: 12 Nov 2019 08:42 PM PST

Currently on my first play through of the game and I made the mistake of giving my friend the controller and he attacked the blacksmith. I'm now currently in Anor Londo fighting the boss there with a +4 axe. I know there is a giant blacksmith but as far as I can tell he can't ascend regular weapons only Andre can. I'm currently level 55 so the guy that absolves my sins would cost over 100k souls I'm pretty sure. Would like some advice on whether it's worth it to power through and try to beat the game with current upgrades or whether I should give up.

I'm a good way into the game but I still feel like I'm new

    Posted: 12 Nov 2019 11:56 AM PST

I've had this game for over a year now and even on my farthest character I just can't beat Quelaag. I've made it to the depths on around 3 other characters but I still feel like I don't understand a lot of the core mechanics of the game. Ideally I'd like to discover them naturally, but the difficulty of the game by itself is making that difficult. I've tried doing research but I can't find any sources easy enough to understand. Any of you guys know some good, simple resources for getting a proper handle of things like stats, weapon information and any other important but not-very-well explained mechanics?
