I fucking hate blue smelter demon

    Posted: 15 Aug 2020 10:32 PM PDT

Everything about brume tower and the Iron passage sucks except for level design, it looks beautiful and can be kinda cheeses with cat ring but if you don't just run past the enemys it sucks, there are thousands of enemies jammed in rooms, the weird witchcraft idol things, the lightning witches with those aoe balls and the run from Iron passage to blue kool-aid. 3 segments filled with all enemies, the fat roll curse the possibility of getting comboed to death, then there's the boss, if you go to the tower right after old king bonfire (which I thought was the right way) the boss order is orange smelter, iron king, and then smelter again you do no damage while he's buffing you have to spare at least 2 heals for aoe damage just hitting him the random aoes the bullshit fire sword hit boxes the attacks that are slower than a decapitated turtle and the fact your almost forced to use 2 estus just getting to him. But this might just be me, I beat nashandra second try than the ancient dragon on i think fifth attempt and roght after I went to fight blue bitch and got him to one hit and died. I HATE HIM. Thank you for reading and I hope you have better luck than me

Edit: I just wanted to thank you all for my first post to reach hot on a subbreddit. I wasn't expecting this much likes and comments and u thought it would just be passed by as another boss rant but thank you all for reading and the help in the comments

    Fat roll all bosses

    Posted: 16 Aug 2020 06:18 AM PDT

Well, it was fun. All bosses beaten with fat rolls. This run was also the first time I got through Cave of the Dead and Frigid Outskirts, so there's that. What challenge should I try next?

    Ds3 did Ds2 dirty

    Posted: 15 Aug 2020 09:44 PM PDT

I mean, apart from an invading npc and a few weapons and whatnot, its like ds2 didn't happen. Ds2 had its first big 4 bosses revolve around the big bosses of Ds1, it had armors and weapons and spells, all while having original content as well. Not to say Ds3 didn't have any original content too, but a lot of the base game is heavily inspired by Ds1, and very little of it resembles Ds2. Farron Swamp is just Dark Root and Blight Town's love child, Anor Londo is literally pulled straight from Ds1, and that's just off the top of my head. I'm not saying those areas are bad, or that its bad for them to be there, on the contrary, sequals should have areas and whatnot from their predecessors. Ds3 didn't really have anything from Ds2 though, and not just in it's world design. It scrapped the Giants plot from Ds2, it didn't touch on the whole Escaping the Curse plot, it ignored most of Ds2's lore when it's lore was written, and took its lore's inspiration almost completely from Ds1.

I beat DS2 for the first time, loved it

    Posted: 16 Aug 2020 12:02 PM PDT

Title. I don't get why everyone hates this game, other than the fact that some of the bosses were pretty mediocre. For me, though, even the dumb bosses like Prowling Magus and Congregation and the Royal Rat Vanguard were a lot of fun. The world was fantastic (better than DS1 in my opinion, asides from maybe the interconnectivity aspect) and I was a huge fan of there being more bosses than normal. My favorite fights were the Executioner's Chariot, Fume Knight, Throne Watcher/Defender (AKA discount O&S), and Darklurker. All of these bosses had an interesting gimmick that made them more exciting to battle.

Exploring Drangleic: Part 10 - Shrine of Amana and the Undead Crypt

    Posted: 16 Aug 2020 10:43 AM PDT

Wow, I have gone (checks update notes) several weeks since posting. Sorry about that. I got distracted doing some other personal projects and then went on a little vacation, so I wasn't really in the mood for writing. But I'm back now! Tell ya what, I'll set a little goal for myself to make sure that doesn't happen again; I'll finish up the lore posts for the main game areas within the next 7 days. How does that sound?

    Now then, onto the lore.

    Shrine of Amana

Ah, don't we all just love Shrine of Amana? Yes, unquestionably the best area in the game and not an absolute blood-boiling nightmare to play through.

Most of this place is knee-deep in water with tree roots everywhere and the sound of a woman singing playing throughout the place. I suspect the water is due to this place being slightly below sea level and the trees... well, I don't actually know about that. I supposed it's somewhat similar to the way Things Betwixt looks, so maybe there are connections with the arch trees here.

The Archdrake Sect is here, along with some lizard-Hollow guys that have fireflies buzzing around them. I wasn't originally sure why the Archdrake are here, but I'll get into a possible reason later. As for the lizard guys, they just seem to be here so there are more easy enemies.

We enter a little hut with a lady inside. She seems to have been the source of the singing. This lady is a Milfanito, and apparently she knew we would be coming. She says that "we" are the Milfanito, and that they sing to those bound by death and Dark, likely referring to the Undead. They sing forever, and have done so for an extremely long time. In fact, they have no idea what's going on in the outside world, as they never have and never will leave. Considering they've been around for ages and never leave, it's safe to assume this Shrine itself has been around long before the creation of Drangleic.

She asks us if we seek Vendrick, and thinks aloud about that question we've heard a few times now; what makes a king? Before leaving, she tells us that their singing makes the "little ones" dance, and that they were taught this.

    Okay, I guess.

From the armor of the Archdrake Sect, we learn that they are the keepers of Lindelt's history and the only ones who know about the country's founding. They are the only ones who possess the record of this event, which is a tome they keep hidden with "good reason". It seems some shady stuff has gone down in Lindelt since the place got started.

Let's see, what else is there in this place. More tree roots, glowing blue flowers, and some ruins. Oh the ruins are neat. What are they here for? My best guess is that this shrine was much more organized a long time ago and had a lot more than just huts, but the passage of time and a lack of care taking has led to the place going to shit.

Old Knights are down here, along with a Dragonrider. This Dragonrider is guarding a locked door, and considering these guys are essentially the royal guard, it's safe to assume what's behind that door is extremely important. There are also some ogres down here, likely placed by Vendrick for extra security.

The Singer's Dress tells us a little more about the Milfanito. They were given song by the Great Dead One, and they sing until they can't anymore. So apparently Nito created the Milfanito. Who could have guessed that? I guess that means this place is also unbelievably ancient if he created the Milfanito and they have never left.

A bonfire in a cave is called Rhoy's Resting Place. You may remember Rhoy from the Grave of Saints and the Ring of Whispers. It seems his exploring came to an end in this place, which is pretty commendable considering how much it took for us to get here. That and y'know, the nightmarish enemy placement.

Not much else of note other than a room I can't get into without tossing out all my Effigies and another Milfanito. On to the boss.

The Demon of Song is a big yucky frog monster with a human-like face and some extra human arms. It's very gross, but apparently it makes up for that with a beautiful singing voice. In case you didn't notice, this monstrosity has been producing the singing we've heard throughout most of the level. It used this singing to lure in its prey, which I assume consisted largely of horny men expecting to find a pretty lady doing the singing. Once this thing developed a habit for eating people (I guess it didn't always do that), it was placed in the Shrine and looked after by a line of priestesses who have died off by now.

It also drops the Key to the Embedded, which is a key-sword we use to jam into the lock face of the Embedded back up in Drangleic Castle. The dude was a cannibal who bound himself away, probably because he realized he couldn't stop eating people. He was locking away another Milfanito, who I assume Vendrick took away for... some reason? I don't actually know why she was being held in there.

A Syan Knight guards are very fancy door leading to an elevator, which takes us deep down into the earth, even further below the Shrine of Amana.

Hold on, who the hell is Amana? There is literally zero other mentions of the name I could find other than the area itself. Was it the Demon? Probably not considering the Shrine was already here before it. If you have any ideas on this, please share them in the comments.

    Undead Crypt

Ah, we've heard about this place a few times before. The first being from the Grave Wardens and the second being from the Orma's Greatshield. Apparently this place is very important. So important that Vendrick would build his castle above it, perhaps?

Treebeard is back. He asks what drives us to overcome the curse and goes on a spiel about how life is beautiful to a point of obsession and that people stay true to themselves even if they're a shell. He gives us the example of a guy who lost his head (most likely Vengarl) and those who pursue love (maybe Alva and Zullie?). He then gives us one of the most direct connections to the last game in explaining that the Lord of Light banished dark and all that came from humanity, which led to men assuming a "fleeting form".

He's very clearly referring to Gwyn and establishing the connection between the Dark and Humanity. In case you're unaware, the soul of humanity is the Dark Soul. He also says that men assumed a fleeting form after Gwyn artificially prolonged the Age of Fire and delayed the Age of Dark, also known as the Age of Men. If Hollowing comes about as the Age of Fire ends, then our "human" forms are fleeting while being Hollowed is the state we are meant to be in.

He asks us if we still desire peace with the knowledge that the promise of the Age of Fire is a lie. Then he tells us that Vendrick, the "near-true monarch", is near. And then he asks us that interesting question we've heard a couple times before; what is a king? We, who were granted nothing of note, what do we want? We don't even know.

And then he peaces out again. We're left with some very deep questions to think about.

There are more Syan Knights, some Hollows, some double-shield guys, and some hexers. Also, it's super dark. However, a voice tells us not to produce light. We move onward and find some passive Grave Wardens and a blue guy with red eyes. This dude is Agdayne, the guardian of the crypt. He says that countless dead rest here, comforted by the Dark, and light only serves to agitate them. Agdayne is a Fenito, presumably the male equivalent of the Milfanito. Just like those ladies, he was given this task by the "first death", presumably Nito, and people from over the ages are here. So much like the Gutter and Black Gulch, this place is something of a time capsule. However, regardless of who they are or when they were from, they're all just dead now. He mentions that Vendrick is deeper inside and many of his servants came to retrieve , but none of them returned, presumably killed by the King's guards. Agdayne jokes (I guess) that perhaps the King isn't in the mood for company.

Upon further conversation, Agdayne tells us that the first Lord of Light feared humans and the Age of Dark they would bring, but humans rarely separate truth from fiction so maybe they wouldn't know this. It seems Agdayne is among one of the oldest characters in the game, having been around since the time of Lordran and the first Lords.

Lighting braziers in the area summon these crusader dark spirits. Another summoning feature are these bells that summon hooded ghost pyromancers. There is one brazier that lights up the entire area when lit, while also summoning all of their respective spirits. It's not very fun.

There's a big corridor with a lot of pyromancers that get summoned by a single bell. At the end of the corridor is a group of Syan Knights and a Dragonrider. Safe to assume this is where Vendrick is.

The corridor leads to... (drum roll please) another corridor. At it's end is a giant guy sitting in a circle of light. This massive bell-wielding warrior is Velstadt, the Royal Aegis.

Oh hey, we've heard of that guy before! So while Raime got exiled, Velstadt got stuck down in the basement protecting Vendrick. About halfway through the fight, he starts using Dark attacks. However, this doesn't help him too much, as most of them are really easily dodged.

Velstadt is an extremely interesting character for multiple reasons, the first of which is his soul. It's the very first in the whole game which is dark. Considering the relevance of dark in the Undead Crypt, it's likely that spending god-knows how long down here eventually began to corrupt his soul. He was always at the King's side, as if he was his own shadow, following him into the Crypt from where he would never return. Velstadt came from a faraway land, but forgot why, making him the biggest person to forget why they came to Drangleic. Oh and I'm assuming he came from Lindelt since it's the big miracle land and his armor was imbued with miracles. And maybe some other reasons we'll get to later on.

Finally after all the trials and tribulations, we've arrived at our goal. After defeating the 4 Old Ones, battling our way through Vendrick's security measures, and suffering countless deaths along the way, we have sought out and found the King.

    And he is a Hollow.

The man who defeated the Old Ones and built Drangleic upon their souls, the man who invaded the land of Giants and fended off their attack on his kingdom, the man responsible for the state of the world as we know it has been reduced to a husk, mindlessly wandering around the chamber he came to as his final hiding place.

It cannot be overstated what an amazingly well-done moment this is with the entire game so far having built up to it. It's among the best moments in the entire series.

On his discarded armor, we find the King's Ring. This accessory allows us to open the King's Gate.

A soul is like a curse. Those with strong souls must bear a stronger curse. Vendrick used a powerful soul to stave off the curse, but in the end he sought the Flame that began it all.

Emerald Herald is here. She tells us to go far east. If we are to be the next monarch, then we'll walk those grounds "without really knowing why."

I somehow never mentioned the time travel theory throughout the entirety of this series. There's a fairly popular theory that the old lady in the intro is the Emerald Herald and when you go through the whirlpool to Things Betwixt, you're actually going back in time. The fact that they both used the "without really knowing why" line lends some credence to this.

So now that we know the fate of Vendrick, why did he not become a "true monarch?" Was it because he became a Hollow, or did he become a Hollow due to not becoming a true monarch? I find the latter much more plausible, as his Hollowing did not occur until everything involved with his shenanigans as King happened. But what led him to seek the First Flame after all that time?

Find out next time! We'll be checking out a couple of the places accessible now that we have the King's Ring. Please share your thoughts on my theories and observations, as well as any of your own theories about the topics discussed. Until next time.

Ever have a moment where you just have to put down the controller and walk away?

    Posted: 16 Aug 2020 05:01 AM PDT

Yesterday I was making my way into the Iron Keep on NG+. After the last boss I was sitting on some souls, but not enough to level, so I pushed forward. As I cleared out the way toward the Smelter Demon, I accidently rolled down to the lower level and was killed by a red Alonne captain when I tried to get back up.

So I cleared it out again, slowly, picked up my souls, then decided to go for the bell tower bonfire instead, since I thought it might be easier to backtrack from there rather than crossing from the first bonfire over and over. After clearing the two knights and turtle i tried to get to the door, forgetting about the knight that jumps down to attack. I got stun locked and killed.

So I slowly cleared my way there again, got my souls, opened the door, walked up the steps, ran past the drop down to the bonfire toward the chest and immediately went to open it quick before turning back to the bonfire. As I opened it, blood stains and messages appeared all around me. Too late, I realized it was a mimic. About 200k souls dropped to the floor.

One more time, i clear my way from the first bonfire, slowly, carefully, taking out the knights along the way. I get to the platform with 2 knights and a turtle. I pull them one at a time. Slowly and carefully. I make my way toward the switch near the door. The knight drops down and I stab with my Grand Lance once. Twice. There was still a little health left, so I attacked once more, and immediately felt regret. The knight was already falling down into the lava. I desperately try to roll back from the edge, but to no avail. I fall to my death, thinking of the 200k souls sitting by the mimic just through the door and up the ladder.

I quit, turned off the game, set down the controller, then laid down in my bed for half an hour before I had to go to work, and didn't pick the game back up for another 24 hours. Of course after that failure I just went straight to the Smelter Demon and one shotted him with no problem, which just rubs salt in the wound.

So, what are your memorable rage quit stories?

Gonna do an absurdly difficult, demented-level Challenge Run on PC

    Posted: 16 Aug 2020 10:03 AM PDT

So, I will adhere to the following points:

    1) Complete game, all bosses (optionals and DLC included).
    2) No head, body, hands or feet armor.
    3) No shield.
    4) No weapons.
    4) No magic (which means no sorceries, miracles or pyromancies).
    5) No dying.
    6) Not resting at bonfires.
    7) I'm allowed to level-up no more than 20 levels in one-go, but only after killing a Great Soul boss (so yeah, only going to level-up a total of 4 times in the whole run).
    8) I must join Company of Champions as soon as I reach Majula.
    9) Healing items allowed.
    10) All rings allowed except covenant rings other than Vanquisher's Seal.
    11) Starting as a Deprived (at lvl 1)

Only attack methods allowed are barehanded (dual wielding and power stancing allowed) and consumables (throwing knives, dung pies, bombs, etc).

I will want someone to give me a Vanquisher's Seal at some point (I really don't want to farm those 50 Awestones man), so if there's a generous soul out there, comment down here.

I will be uploading the video series to my new and freshly created Youtube Channel (without mic or cam and not live tho because I don't live alone and I don't wanna be noisy).

I expect to upload Part 1 before 21:00 CLT/ 20:00 EST, so please support me if you can at the aforementioned channel.

In any case, thank you and don't give up, skeletons!

    DS2 SOTFA vs original

    Posted: 16 Aug 2020 12:48 PM PDT

I had the original and it felt like I blinked and SOTFS came out. You can't seem to get the original version very easily and I'm kinda wonder what was the point? Was SOTFS supposed to be a remake, a patch or did they just decide it wasn't that good when it came out so they tried to cover the cracks?

Don't get me wrong I still play it though not as much as 1 and have found an original copy to play to work out diffences myself but as I have y'all here to ask I thought I'd give the experts a go.

This is my first ds2 run and I have completed every other souls game (EVERY) and I can easily say this is the most infuriating dlc I have ever played. Let alone dark souls game. More specifically the dual tiger fight and the journey there. The boss its self isn't so bad I died a couple times to bs hitboxes and poor dodges on my part . But the reindeers those mother fuckers are harder than anything I have endured in this game and im like this close to saying fuck this game

    Posted: 16 Aug 2020 11:47 AM PDT

Firstly I think for me personally I'm going to consider this a stand alone game because of how different it is but aside from that one of the things I loved was actually being able to dual wield which I wish stayed for ds3. Another thing would be the scenery espically shrime of amana which was the best looking as far as base game areas go. I also love the ability to swap gender on the fly to see how different armor sets look on each one, and the fact that you can use magic to buff infused weapons although it's probably annoying for pvp I enjoyed using it in pve a ton.
